<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Reading fluency is a key aspect of reading development and is critical for a reader to develop comprehension skills. It is at times used interchangeably with reading comprehension, which refers to a reader&#8217;s ability to understand and retain the meaning of what they read. It involves not just decoding the words, but also making connections between the text and prior knowledge, analyzing the information, and reflecting on the message.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In other words, fluency is a measure of how smoothly and efficiently a reader can read, while comprehension is an evaluation of how well a reader understands what they have read.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Improving reading fluency requires a combination of instruction, practice, and support. There are a variety of strategies and activities that can be used to help students improve their reading fluency. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">As a mom to a 9-year-old, I am constantly looking for ways to engage my daughter in fun and creative activities. “I am bored” is something I get to hear quite often as she is my only one. To address her boredom and direct her energies to something worthwhile, I am always open to trying new activities with her.&nbsp;When I came across DIY tangram, I knew she would love it as she enjoys crafts that give her the freedom to be creative.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Today I am going to share how you too can make a DIY tangram with your kid. But first, let me tell you what tangrams actually are.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A tangram belongs to the category of dissection puzzles. People believe it originated in China in the late 18th century. The set comprises seven geometrical shapes that can be arranged on a flat surface to form countless designs. The two-dimensional shapes that make a tangram are:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>2 Large triangles</li>



<li>1 Medium triangle</li>



<li>2 Small triangles</li>



<li>1 Square</li>



<li>1 Parallelogram</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Tangrams are not just great for playing. Children can reap several benefits by creating their own designs and solving tangram puzzles. The game can help improve your child&#8217;s problem-solving, visual-spatial, spatial rotation, and <a href="https://numberdyslexia.com/critical-thinking-activities-for-middle-school/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-wpel-link="internal">critical thinking</a> skills. It encourages kids to use their imagination and creativity and leads them to a road to self-discovery where they can explore new ideas and make something different.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So, without further ado, let me show you how you and your child can make a tangram and have some fun together!</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-vivid-green-cyan-color has-text-color"><strong>How to make a tangram using paper?</strong></h2>

<li>Few sketch pens/ markers</li>



<li>A pair of scissors</li>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" style="font-size:24px"><strong>Steps to follow &#8211;&nbsp;</strong></h3>

<li>Begin by taking any piece of paper.</li>



<li>As you need to make a square out of it, fold it as shown in pic 2, followed by making a fold as displayed in pic.</li>



<li>Make sure you align the borders of the paper perfectly.</li>

<li>Open the folds to reveal the square. Use a pair of scissors to cut the extra part, and there you have a perfect square to work on. </li>



<li>Now cut the square along the line of the fold to get two triangles, as shown in the next step.</li>

<li>Fold one of the triangles, carefully aligning all the borders, and cut it through the middle as shown in pic 7. </li>



<li>The two triangles you now obtained are your 2 large triangles of the tangram.</li>

<li>Now take the other triangle (pic 9) and fold it by bringing down the top tip to the center of the opposite side.</li>



<li>Press it to form a nice crease.</li>



<li>You can even use a pencil and ruler to mark the crease (pic 11), so it helps you or your kid identify where to cut exactly. </li>



<li>Next, cut along the marked line to get two distinct pieces, as shown below.</li>

<li>The triangle you see in pic 13 is the medium triangle of the tangram set. Set it aside and work with the isosceles trapezoid as marked in pic 13. </li>



<li>Fold it to make a crease in the center. </li>



<li>Mark it with a pencil and cut it to obtain two pieces (pic 17).</li>

<li>Fold it as shown in pic 19. </li>



<li>Mark the crease, and make a cut on the line to obtain one small triangle and square of the tangram set.</li>

<li>Now use the right piece of the trapezoid and fold the lower left corner while aligning it to the upper right corner.</li>



<li>Open the fold and cut the fold to get your last two pieces of tangrams – one small triangle and a parallelogram.</li>

Children love to recreate things they see around them, such as animals, airplanes, boats, butterflies, and so on. You may be amazed to see how creative your child can get when playing with tangrams.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">IEP stands for <a href="https://numberdyslexia.com/iep-history-individualized-education-program-timeline/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-wpel-link="internal">Individual Education Plans</a>. Those involved in special education teaching find IEP of great help in identifying a student&#8217;s strengths and needs. A successful IEP implementation starts from planning and developing an effective IEP. So, it is essential to know the steps involved in it by heart. It involves identifying goals and plans for the children transitioning from one grade to another.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In this post, find below a step-by-step guide to writing up an effective IEP. But, before that, let us know why you need an IEP in the first place, and what its benefits are. Scroll down to learn more!</p>



<h2 class="has-vivid-green-cyan-color has-text-color wp-block-heading"><strong>What is IEP?</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">IEP, or Individual Education Plans, or Individualized Education Program, is exclusively meant for children identified with a specific disability (such as learning disabilities, autism, cognitive problem, hearing/speech disabilities, etc.) and attending educational institutions at the elementary or secondary level. An IEP consists of a few things. These are:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Progress of the child with a disability in the general curriculum education process</li></ul>



<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Availability of specialized services to the child in the education institution</li></ul>



<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Availability of the educational accommodations that a child must receive</li></ul>



<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Academic performance of the child at present</li></ul>



<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Setting specific and measurable goals for the child to achieve regarding education</li></ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A considerable number of steps need to be followed in order to ensure everything that is crucial for a child as per the needs is added to the plan. Here is a step-by-step guide for preparing an effective IEP.</p>



<h3 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading" style="font-size:24px"><strong>1. Developing the team of collaborators</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">An IEP development is successful only when the <a href="https://numberdyslexia.com/iep-team-members-and-their-roles/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-wpel-link="internal">right people</a> contribute to it. So, when you set to develop one for your student or your child, you need to consider whom you will take within your team. Those who must be in the team are- the student, their family, teachers, and specialists. You may consider not including the child if they have not reached 16 years. But we would recommend you not to do so. After all, a child needs to know what is being planned for them. As the child grows, you need to give them more responsibilities.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You need to include the family as they are the ones who would support the child at home. Everyone should be on the list, from parents to siblings, for they know the child best.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Also, <a href="https://numberdyslexia.com/teacher-parent-communication-apps-for-schools-2022/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-wpel-link="internal">communication</a> between the school and the family is essential, mainly when the child is promoted to a new class. So, when you plan an IEP, you must include, if possible, all the teachers of the child&#8217;s course (instead of only the special needs teacher or the classroom teacher).</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As for specialists, your IEP plan should have room for speech therapists, education specialists, psychologists, social workers, counselors, etc.</p>



<h3 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading" style="font-size:24px"><strong>2. Reviewing the child&#8217;s educational progress so far</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You need to collect and review the child&#8217;s progress report, at least from the last session. These reports would help you recognize what the child has already achieved; you may find that the child has mastered some achievements beyond those years and consider those as the child&#8217;s strengths. Again, these reports will help you identify what the child still needs to achieve, and you can view those as their areas of improvement. Now, you can move on to the next step of the process.</p>



<h3 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading" style="font-size:24px"><strong>3. Setting goals for the child/learner</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">From the knowledge earned from reviewing the previous year&#8217;s performance of the child, you now know what goals you need to include in the plan. You must make sure that these goals are <a href="https://numberdyslexia.com/smart-goals-guide-importance-and-examples/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-wpel-link="internal">SMART</a> (i.e., Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound), small, devoid of complicated jargon, and quite ambitious. If the children are subjected to higher set goals, it will be easier to minimize the gap with other mainstream students in the class.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For preparing the goals, it is important that you take in suggestions and opinions from the family and the child also. This way, you can make sure that the goals you include are enjoyable. It will be more successful also.</p>



<h3 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading" style="font-size:24px"><strong>4. Consulting the goals with the other teachers and members</strong></h3>

With years of experience and expertise, they would know which goals need more specificity, whether any goal needs to be eliminated, what you can include further, etc. This improves the IEP plan and makes it more efficient before you finally write it off.</p>



<h3 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading" style="font-size:24px"><strong>5. Including accommodations and modifications as a part of the learning process</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">According to the <a href="https://dyslexiaida.org/accommodations-for-students-with-dyslexia/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow external" data-wpel-link="external">International Dyslexia Association</a>, the term &#8216;accommodations&#8217; refer to making adjustments to the present situation or set-up so that a child can achieve their targets. For example, while everyone else in the class reads from books, you can offer audio-text provision to the special need child. So, the IEP plan should include these accommodation provisions for the children.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As for modifications, you need to shape the assignments and set the expectations in a modified way. For example, instead of giving prime and composite numbers assignments, you can choose only prime to begin with.</p>



<h3 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading" style="font-size:24px"><strong>6. Preparing a draft IEP</strong></h3>

You can send the draft to the parents if you are a teacher. Or, if you are a parent, you can send it to the teachers or other IEP team members for a final check and ask for their input, if any.</p>

Here again, you have to keep in mind that the IEP plan should be focused on the child and not on the presentation or the looks of the document. Instead of decorating it with colorful borders, highlighting the heading, etc., emphasize the main points, mark them in bold, and maintain a legible font size and style.</p>



<h3 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading" style="font-size:24px"><strong>9. Updating the IEP plan from time to time</strong></h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">PLAAFP, or Present Levels of Academic Achievement and Functional Performance, is utterly important. Being an educator now has new meanings where they are promoted to be inclusive of each child, accommodative of the learning pace, adapt and execute new ways of teaching and accept an individual just the way they are.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Teaching has been considered as one of the noble professions of all as tutors are responsible for building the blocks of tomorrow through their knowledge and teaching skills. Therefore, tutoring can be a lucrative business with low upfront costs and flexible work schedules.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This starts with the freedom of choosing a venue, as per one’s likeness and preference. It could be at a student&#8217;s residence, at the tutor&#8217;s house or at a location specified for similar purposes like a library. While tutoring is something that a university student might venture into to make ends meet, beginning a tutoring business is different and requires a specific skill set.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Technology has made life easy and simplified our approaches to anything that previously needed physical involvement, like owning thousands of books on our phones that would otherwise require rooms of libraries. Similar is the case for individuals with dyslexia who aspire to be educators.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://numberdyslexia.com/dyslexia-types/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-wpel-link="internal">Dyslexia</a> causes difficulties with verbal memory, verbal processing speed, and sometimes coordination and has no link to an individual&#8217;s intelligence. However, an individual with dyslexia does not necessarily have lower<a href="https://www.nih.gov/news-events/news-releases/nih-funded-study-finds-dyslexia-not-tied-iq" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow external" data-wpel-link="external"> IQ levels.</a></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Being a tutor with dyslexia provides an individual with personal insight and motivation to be more attentive in the classroom and sensitive to students with difficulties. Furthermore, it gives the tutors the chance to show that even with learning disabilities like dyslexia, it is possible to imagine, create and live a life of confidence and self-esteem. <p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>For Ex:</strong> Creating extensively explained steps around an activity or a lesson to make sure that the topic is explained as a whole, color coding the important information with carefully curated notes, which had to be trimmed later to suit the teaching hours.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These individuals are representative of the fact that a learning disability stands ineffective towards a person’s success if the right modalities are used to nurture oneself.&nbsp;</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Parents with the tendency to <strong>either over indulge or neglect the needs of their child </strong>can prove to be difficult during the attempt to develop a balanced path of nurturing for the child.</li><li>Seeking <strong>validation for the tasks that are basic</strong> to the duties of a parent and creating an environment of hostility if unacknowledged.&nbsp;</li><li>Parents with a tendency to<strong> appear fully equipped and well informed</strong>, eventually lacking in judgment and blame the consequences on the educator and the school.</li><li>Parents who have the tendency to <strong>reflect their negative experiences or their unfulfilled expectations </strong>from the child.</li><li>Parents who are <strong>unable to understand the impact of disability</strong> on various aspects of life associate the negative outcomes with rather naive and inconsequential features to their child.</li><li>Parents coming from families with conditions like poverty, lawsuits, or multiple individuals with disabilities at home lead to <strong>saturation of their capacity to understand</strong> and deal with their special needs child and their life goals.&nbsp;</li><li>It can be difficult for an educator to deal with a situation when the biological parents are not the primary caretakers, and the <strong>responsibility has been taken up by foster parents, non-custodial parents, or elder siblings</strong> with less to almost no time to spare for the child.</li></ul>

Thus, It would be wise to meet parents at their convenience, even if that requires meeting outside of the classroom. Nonetheless, accommodating unannounced requests to meet can be politely discouraged and dealt with by recruiting shadow teachers who can briefly meet the parent and tend to their concerns. This way cooperation is executed without having to overlap aspects of the parent’s personal life with the educator’s professional life.&nbsp;</p>



<h3 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading" style="font-size:24px"><strong>4. Set Boundaries and Expectations&nbsp;</strong></h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Setting boundaries and expectations can be a very effective strategy to deal with difficult parents. Being difficult can lead a parent to push the educator into over indulgence, feeling guilty, overstepping in the strategies used as an educator, etc. Nevertheless, being clear and specific about intolerable behaviors can be liberating. Making sure that your personal life and professional life don’t spill over each other and don’t fuse with the responsibilities of the parents can allow educators to be true to their responsibilities and provide the best of their duties.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Make sure you are 100% transparent with the parents with regard to any of the issues you might be facing with the children. However, even for teachers when they inform problems, some difficult parents might just forget about the issue or do not take it seriously. Make the parent feel that you are on the same page and your ultimate objective is also to make the situation better for the child in terms of education. At the same time, do not allow yourself to be pressurised or persuaded. But find a common ground, just for the sake of the child.</p>
