This is an elaborative lesson plan to familiarize kids with the importance of teamwork and collaboration. It is designed in such a way that after the lesson plan is completed, kids will be able to effectively implement the skills required for teamwork in their day-to-day lives.

It is a wonderful medium to embark on a journey of one of the most important life skills, called teamwork. The objectives of the lesson plan include- 

• To help kids develop the skill of working in a group setting. 
• To help them develop confidence in sharing ideas and opinions in group settings. 
• To help them develop trust for team members. 

The lesson plan begins with a brain-storming activity or game, which can also be used as an ice-breaker game to make kids comfortable with their surroundings and further activities. 

In this activity, kids will learn the importance of trust when working in a team and how challenging tasks can be solved when done in collaboration. Here, 4 to 5 children will hold each other’s hands and will form a circle. Now, they will cross their both arms without breaking the initial hold. It will lead them to change their position. Finally, without breaking the hold, ask the children to return to their original position. The game is known as ‘human knot’. 

As an educator, you can impose a time limit on the game to make it more thrilling and fun. The discussion is a vital component of the game for kids to understand the reasons behind the activity. 

Activity 1: Talent Hunt 

Pre-requisites: List of talents, phone/cameras, and two groups. 

For this activity, make a group of at least 5-10 children and provide them with a list of talents. Let the group members go through the list and identify which task can be done by which member. After that, beginning from the top, kids have to perform every talent written on the list and the whole performed list will be recorded using a camera or a mobile. It is a great activity to enhance team cohesion and boost trust among the team members. 

Activity 2: Collage Making 

Prerequisite: chart paper/ drawing sheet, old magazines/ newspaper. 

In this activity, participants will have to make a collage based on the theme that best represents every member of the group. Children can have picture cutouts from newspapers or magazines and make a collage out of them. This activity can be done in one large group or the teacher can make several groups as the student’s strength and convenience allows. This activity will improve some of the crucial teamwork skills, such as decision-making, effective communication, and problem-solving, and will teach kids the value of trust while working in a team. 

Strategies to foster the spirit of teamwork in children

Teamwork is not a theoretical concept that is taught to kids and they will memorize it. Rather, it is a skill that is honed over years and benefits the individual for a lifetime. Some strategies to foster the spirit of teamwork in children are- 

I. At School 

1. Group Reading 

It is a simple yet effective strategy to reinforce team spirit in children and educate them on how to effectively work in a team. Teachers can make a group of 3-5 children and use shared reading books to have children read effectively in the group settings. 

2. Science experiments 

Group science experiments are an effective means to teach problem-solving and decision-making in group settings. Teachers can again make a group of 3-5 children and provide them with any science experiment, such as energy activities, and let children brainstorm on its execution and implementation and come to conclusions. Successful completion of the activity will result in enhanced self-esteem, on an individual level and the group level. 

3. Group sports 

Group sports are a wonderful example of ‘teams that stick together, win together’. Group sports, such as basketball, football, cricket, etc. will teach kids how to effectively work in a team and have respectful and trustworthy relationships with other team members. 

4. Group Debate competition. 

In group debates, teachers can form two groups, one for the motion and one against it. Each group can have 3-5 members who will sophisticatedly put forward their ideas and opinions and will try to win the debate competition. Alternatively, teachers can plan interactive group discussions with creative group discussion topics to promote teamwork. It will teach them effective group functioning and the crux of healthy competition. 

5. Group Projects 

Teachers can provide group projects or class assignments in groups, either over vacation or for class only to enhance the team spirit in the kids. Projects can be as simple as making a model for a Geography class or as complex as writing a novel based on every team member, the only condition is that it should be in a group. 

II. At Home 

1. Baking with siblings 

A fun and light-hearted task that kids can easily perform at home. Kids can bake their favorite cookies or cakes in collaboration with their siblings or parents and can enjoy a fun evening with their favorite snacks. It will teach kids problem-solving and the importance of effective communication to get things done.

2. Board games 

Board games are great for fostering and enhancing both individual achievements and group achievements. It teaches little kids the importance of patience, cooperation, and collaboration. Parents can plan a game night with family and play various board games, based on different themes, such as math, wh-questions, etc., to have fun, teach kids important skills, and enhance their knowledge base.

3. Group dance, songs, or acts for family meet-ups 

Parents can encourage their kids to prepare a group dance, song, or some play with their siblings or cousins for family meet-ups. It will be a great way to have fun and teach kids some important skills related to group work.

In our last blog post, we shared with you a lesson plan to teach adjectives to English learners. And today, we bring to you an engaging lesson plan to help students learn conjunctions.

What are conjunctions?

Conjunctions are also an important part of speech. Words that are used to join phrases, clauses, and sentences together are known as conjunctions. So, when we say, “I like eating cakes and chocolates,” the word ‘and‘ serves as a conjunction. 

The role of conjunctions is to make the English language fluent without sounding choppy. Without conjunctions, our sentences would be short, with pauses every now and then. But with the addition of conjunctions, we are able to connect two or more short sentences to form one sentence, which may seem complex yet has an element of style and sophistication.

Types of conjunctions covered in our lesson plan

1. Coordinating conjunctions

These conjunctions are used to join two sentences, words, or phrases that are grammatically equal.

In the sentence, “I am going to buy apples and bananas,” ‘and‘ is a coordinating conjunction. Other than the word ‘and,’ there are six more coordinating conjunctions in the English language. These are for, nor, or, but, yet, and so.

2. Subordinating conjunctions

Words like if, because, since, while, and until fall into the category of subordinating conjunctions. These words are used to join a dependent clause with an independent clause. A dependent clause is a string of words that don’t form a complete sentence on their own and must always be connected to an independent clause to bring out the true meaning.

In the sentence “I can face the world when I see you smile,” ‘when‘ is a subordinating conjunction that connects the dependent clause “I see you smile’ with the independent clause ‘I can face the world.’

It is common for students to confuse between dependent and independent clauses. If you find your students struggling with it, conduct simple activities for learning-dependent and independent clauses before you start teaching subordinating conjunctions.  

3. Correlative conjunctions

Word pairs that are used together to join two actual elements in a sentence are known as correlative conjunctions. Examples include neither nor, either-or, not only but also, and more. Word pairs forming correlative conjunctions are never used alone and are always used in unison.

Look at the following sentence – “Neither I nor my sister are interested in watching baseball.” See how the pair of correlative conjunctions ‘neither-nor’ are used in the sentence.

An engaging lesson plan that makes learning conjunctions easy!

Our conjunction lesson plan is curated, keeping in mind beginner conjunction learners. This means you can use it as a tool if your students are completely new to the concept of conjunctions. 

Through this lesson plan, we aim to achieve three important objectives. The first is to introduce the topic to learners; the second is to teach them how they can use conjunctions for framing longer sentences; and lastly, to teach them about different types of conjunctions.

Before you start the lesson plan, have a whiteboard and some dry-erase markers ready to be able to write sentences on the board and explain to students what conjunctions are and how they can use them.

Begin the lesson by giving a detailed introduction to conjunctions. Once you observe that your students have grasped the idea, you can move on to teaching the different types. While we have provided examples to help you explain, it would be a good idea to collect and use a variety of sentences as examples to help your students understand better.

Next, you can distribute the two activity worksheets provided in the lesson plan to each student so they can practice what they have learned. You can also include other activities for teaching conjunctions if you like. In case you notice your students facing a problem in solving the worksheets, take the lead and solve them together. You can always help them with answers if they are stuck somewhere.

Add a meaningful conclusion to the conjunction lesson plan

1. Summarize the main points of the lesson plan.

Before ending the session, recap the important points of the lesson with your students. This way, students will have key takeaways on the topic that will remain in their memory for a long time. You can have a short question-and-answer session to get an idea of how well your students have understood the concept.

2. Talk about the importance of conjunctions in oral and written communication.

Often, students question the need to learn a particular topic. So, take a moment to explain to students why learning conjunctions is necessary. Use the following points as a guide so your students learn the importance of conjunctions.

• Conjunctions create a logical relationship between words, phrases, or sentences.
• They enable language users to come up with a variety of sentence structures.
• They allow us to create rich and detailed sentences for improved information sharing.
• Conjunctions allow us to share consolidated information in fewer sentences.
• They impart a rhythm and flow to our conversations.
• They help us write well-organized essays, reports, and research papers and improve our written communication.  

3. Encourage continued practice of conjunctions.

Self-practice and exploration can help students master the concepts they are learning at school. To make sure your students don’t forget about the things they learned in class, you can encourage them to read books or any other reading material at home and list down the conjunctions they find in a notebook. Or, you can tell them about a few online games for conjunctions that they can engage in at home during their free time. We bet your students won’t mind indulging in them!

1. An introduction to adjectives

Any lesson plan should always begin with an introduction. It helps kids know what they are going to learn on a particular day. Beginning your lesson with an introduction to adjectives will capture the attention of students and create interest.

It will help them understand why it is important to learn adjectives and will provide them with a direction to look forward to. You can conduct a warm-up activity on the topic, like the one we have mentioned in our lesson plan, to set the stage for learning.

2. An opportunity to learn new adjectives

The second point an adjective lesson plan must consist of is a chance to learn new adjectives. This will help build the learner’s vocabulary, so they have a good number of adjectives in their arsenal to use in subsequent activities.

To accomplish this, you can show images to your students and encourage them to describe each one of them. Chances are your students will be able to use some describing words like ‘hot’ for tea or ‘cold’ for ice cream but will be unaware that those words are actually adjectives.

3. An opportunity to practice using adjectives

After students understand what adjectives are and have a few adjectives in their kitty, it is time to conduct activities that allow students to practice using adjectives they know of.

Concluding a lesson plan is as important as introducing the concept to students. An effective conclusion can help you evaluate how well your students have understood the concept and give you a chance to assign extended activities. Let’s have a closer look at each one of them.

A. Evaluate students’ understanding of adjectives.

After you have finished the two given activities in the lesson plan, it’s time to evaluate student understanding. This can be done by conducting a simple quiz or by having students solve a worksheet with no help from your side.

You can now or later review student worksheets to ascertain if your students have grasped the topic well or not. Any lag in understanding can be taken care of then and there or in the next session.

The next step in the lesson conclusion is assigning extended learning activities like giving at-home assignments to students so they can review their knowledge of adjectives and reinforce their understanding.

However, storytelling is not only about timeless classics and epic myths; it is an important skill that prepares kids for mastering grammar and verbal skills. It helps cultivate excellent vocabulary and communication skills and improves memory and learning abilities in developing kids. 

To introduce the art of story retelling to little learners in an engaging and fun way, this post brings you a structured story-retelling lesson plan. The lesson plan highlights the importance of retelling and facilitates the development of the skills required to acquire those benefits. The lesson plan is suitable for use at home and classroom and effectively helps kids embark on their journey in storytelling.

Essential components of storytelling.

A good story is a mix of various ingredients that bring flavors and tastes to it. It involves certain components that structure the story and make it exciting. These components are the very basis of retelling and are important to teach kids story retelling. The components involve- 

1. Setting 

The setting represents where the narration is taking place. Here, you can explain the period the story is set in, time zone, seasons, day or night, location, etc. It will involve everything to help kids imagine the story and its setting. 

For instance, a deep, dark forest filled with wild trees and bushes. Sounds of birds singing and animals roaring fill the midnight air from far away. A waterfall sounds from a distance, and the horses’ footsteps sound near it, indicating the presence of the king’s soldiers. 

2. Characters 

Characters are the main element of the story that keeps the story moving. Characters can be humans, animals, plants, insects, aliens, beasts, witches, princesses, etc. They have a major role in the story, and the narration generally revolves around the characters’ actions and motivations. 

3. Theme 

A good story has a central theme that signifies the story’s meaning and adds depth to it. A story could be happy, sad, mysterious, adventurous, family-oriented, friend-oriented, etc. 

For instance, in the deep woods, a smith’s family lives. The family involves two kids, their mother, and a father. They used to live happily and in a cooperative environment. 

4. Conflicts 

Another major element of a good narration is conflict. It brings spice and action to the story and piques the listener’s interest in the narration. The plot’s characters are involved in the conflict and also deal with it. Narration involves vividly describing the conflict, how it affects the characters, which characters are involved, and how they plan to deal with it. 

5. Conflict resolution

With conflict, a good story involves conflict resolution, too. It is generally the story’s climax, where the conflict is resolved, and the characters move towards their happy endings. Here, the story could involve what strategies characters used to resolve the conflict, such as fighting the beast, or the steps involved in doing so, such as the main character scaling the walls of the palace, fighting the beast soldiers, navigating the path toward the captured princess, fought the beast in his way, and so on. 

6. Emotions 

Emotions are like a salt to the story. Without it, the story will taste bland. There are various emotions that the narrator tries to arouse in the listeners, however, the story generally deals with one or two major emotions that form the basis of the story. 

7. Sequence of events 

For a story to make sense, a sequence of events should logically, accurately, and systematically represent which event occurred when, where, how, and why. It will help the listener remember the story, join the bits and pieces of the story, and understand it. 

Story retelling lesson plan

Story retelling lesson plan is a wonderful tool to educate kids on the core of story retelling. This elaborative lesson plan aims to enhance the child’s reading comprehension, verbal abilities, and recall skills. It is a great tool, thoughtfully designed to cover multiple aspects of story retelling and teach kids the sequencing of events. 

The lesson plan has some objectives, such as 

• To learn about sequencing events of the story: beginning, middle, and the end. 
• To memorize and recall the main event from the story.

The lesson plan begins with an introductory activity to facilitate story retelling in kids. Here, the educators will narrate a story to the kids that kids can easily relate to and understand. Further, encourage kids to actively listen to the story and ask them some specific questions regarding the story to assess their story’s understanding.  

Once you are sure that kids understand the story, encourage them to retell it. Tell kids to narrate the story in a way as they are telling it to someone hearing it for the first time. 

While telling and retelling the story, bring the kids’ attention to certain important components for gauging whether the kids are following up on the story or not.  

• Main character (s) of the story.
• The setting of the story, I.e., the place and the time.
• The theme of the story
• The sequence of events in the story. 

These components help assess the kid’s understanding level, their ability to recall the events, and narrate the story’s events in the way it was originally narrated. 

Further, you can use prompts to bring the kid’s attention to certain parts of the story and highlight important events.  

Strategy 1

This strategy helps ensure that kids follow the sequence of the story and recall the correct events in a sequence. Make a pair of kids, and let one child narrate the story’s setting; the other will introduce the characters, and then again, the first kid will highlight the theme, and so on. 

It will help kids collaboratively narrate the story. You can further encourage kids to act out the emotional aspects of certain events to bring more life to the story and intrigue kids.

Strategy 2

Strategy 2 is a beautiful and creative way to encourage children to engage in story retelling. Help kids make a soft toy or sock puppet and again make a pair of two kids. Provide both kids with a puppet or toy and let them take chances narrating the story. Only this time, it has to be the puppet narrating the story, not the kids. In other words, let kids mimic and narrate the story in a way that it looks like puppets are narrating the story.  

The art of storytelling and retelling is not limited to literature; it applies to almost every aspect of life. For instance, science and social studies. The lesson plan elaborates on how story retelling can assist in science experiments and social studies. 

Lastly, story retelling has various benefits, which the lesson plan wonderfully works on and helps educators or parents teach those benefits to little learners. Some benefits are- 

• It enhances kid’s recalling abilities 
• It aids in improving their comprehension skills

• It exposed them to voice modulation.

• Who do you think is the main character of the story?
• Why do you think the character did the thing he did?
• If you were to be the main character, would you have reacted any differently to the conflict in the story? 
• What emotions do you think the main character is experiencing right now?
• Can you think of a different ending to the story?
• If given a chance, which character would you like to play and why?
• What lesson do you think the author tries to give through the story?
• What theme is the story revolving around?
• Which supporting character is your favorite and why?
• Can you suggest another name for the story relevant to what you just narrated?

Kids engage in story-retelling activities and games from a young age, as these are a sound way to build imagination and empower kids in their academic journey.

Asking questions and answering them represents the innate curiosity of kids. To foster and encourage this innate curiosity and strengthen the communication skills of children, it’s crucial to teach young ones wh-questions from a young age. Even in school years, wh-questions are a compulsory part of the elementary school curriculum. Plenty of interactive ways can assist parents and teachers in educating kids about wh-questions, such as wh-questions board games, online games, and activities. 

However, parents and teachers can also use the wh-question lesson plan to be more formal and creative in their approach. It is a comprehensive lesson plan that wonderfully presents the key aspects of wh-questions and the carefully planned activities will ensure the kids properly understand the concept and apply it in their daily communications. 

What does research have to say on the acquisition of Wh-questions for kids? 

In a longitudinal study^[1], seven children aged 2-3 years were observed and studied for their language development. The study was based on previous findings of how kids acquire language and aimed to expand the subject matter to other factors contributing to language acquisition in kids. 

Earlier, it was found that kids learn to ask wh-questions, such as what, where, and who, before the wh-questions, like how, why, and when, along with the verbs. Various other studies in acquiring first and second languages confirmed the same sequence. The reason behind the sequence was explained in terms of the abstract thoughts of the kids during their cognitive development. 

However, the current study found three other factors contributing to the mentioned wh-questions sequence and abstract thinking. The factors involve:

• The syntactic functions of different wh-forms.
• The selection of verbs in wh-questions.
• The use of wh-questions in discourse. 

In another study^[2], fascinating findings were reported, confirming the association between the quantity of content kids are exposed to and the vocabulary they acquire during their developing years. The study reported that the overall quantity of father talk does not contribute much to the vocabulary and reasoning skills of kids as young as two, but the father putting up the wh-questions does. The study further stated that the kids elicit the verbal response required for building vocabulary and reasoning skills, even when the wh-questions asked by fathers are more frequent and syntactically complex. 

What makes learning Wh- Questions important for kids?

Wh-questions are fundamental to language development and mark a significant milestone in a child’s cognitive growth. As stated above, kids as young as 2 years old begin to explore and actively employ wh-questions, making its acquisition and learning important. Learning why questions are important because- 

• Wh-questions play a pivotal role in facilitating conversations, helping kids to express their thoughts and emotions with their families and peers. 
• By asking wh-questions, children demonstrate their ability to understand instructions and follow them accurately. 
• Wh-questions contribute to vocabulary enrichment, helping children build upon their existing lexicon
• A solid grasp of wh-questions helps kids learn how to form grammatically and syntactically correct sentences. 
• Proficiency in wh-questions ensures that children can respond accurately without confusion, as they are able to distinguish between different wh-question words.
• Engaging in wh-questions indicated that kids are aware of their senses and environment and have knowledge of them. 

Wh-Questions lesson plan: An educational plan to teach kids functions of wh-questions. 

The research mentioned above, and its benefits indicate the importance of wh-questions. As crucial as Wh-questions are, their functions can be confusing for little learners to comprehend. Among many similar-looking wh-words, differentiating one from another and using the correct wh-word in specific contexts can perplex and overwhelm kids. 

Considering the possible challenges kids could face while comprehending wh-questions, we have carefully curated a wh-question lesson plan that is fun, creative, and unique. The lesson plan has been developed to educate kids on different aspects of wh-questions, such as their functions, the context they are used in, the meaning of each wh-questions, and so on, ensuring an effective learning experience. 

The wh-question lesson plan is based on the following objectives- 

• To let children identify “wh” questions. 
• To understand the use of each question word. 
• To be able to form simple “wh” questions. 

The lesson plan begins with a brainstorming activity. The brainstorming activity is a great way to set the pace of learning and prepare kids for the main content. The activity involves kids brainstorming different question words they use while asking the questions or having conversations in their daily lives. Once kids can list up some words, bring their attention to their spellings and emphasize why those words are called wh-words. 

The lesson plan further represents a detailed and colorful chart where functions and examples of each wh-word are given. The chart is beautifully designed to be clear yet comprehensive. Activity 1: 

Before beginning the activity, ensure that kids are comfortable with the previous content of the lesson plan, only then begin with the activity. The activity involves functions of each wh-word written on a sheet. Kids must read the function and identify which wh-word is used for that specific function. 

Activity 2: 

This activity is a great way to put the kid’s learnings of wh-words to use. It will help teach kids how different wh-words are used and which word is appropriate for which context. 

A chart is given, where different wh-words are written. Kids have to form the questions using that wh-word. A wonderful activity to educate kids about the functions and applicability of wh-words.

In the world of communication, words like ‘What, when, why, how, who, where, etc.’ are indispensable. These words strengthen our vocabulary, speaking skills, grammar, and other necessary language-related skills. The lesson is customizable and teachers can modify it based on their needs and student’s learning capabilities. 

Number talk lesson plan for elementary school kids focuses on certain objectives. The objectives include- 

• Number talk will help children be confident in solving math problems. 
• Gradually speed up the math calculations 
• Be more flexible in reaching mathematical solutions 

The lesson plan begins with a warm-up activity that will make children comfortable with math talks and discussions, and it will be a wonderful activity for keeping their brains active and letting their thoughts flow. It is also a great substitute for ice-breaker activity and will give the way to more advanced-level math talks. 

The lesson plan consists of strategies designed especially for elementary school kids to enhance critical thinking in developing kids. The strategies are- 

Strategy 1 

It is a simple activity that is fun but also brain-stimulating. Educators encourage kids to come up with any number and write it in the middle of the sheet. Now, ask kids to write a few numbers around that middle number. Ensure the middle number is greater than the numbers surrounding it. 

Now, kids need to use the numbers on the sheet to get the middle number. For instance, the middle number is 8. Numbers surrounding it are 2, 4, 5, 6, and 3. Here, adding 2 and 6 will get us our middle value. 

Other arithmetic operations can be used to bring a challenging element to the activity, along with addition. For instance, adding 6 and 5 in the above example will give us 11. Now subtract 3 from 11, we will get 8. 

Strategy 2 

It is a great activity to promote flexible thinking and encourage assessing things from multiple perspectives. While explaining their perspectives, kids will also learn how to conduct math discussions and report math findings using the right terminology. 

In this strategy, a certain pair of numbers are given. Each pair involves three numbers; educators can use more than three numbers based on the understanding level of the student. Kids have to identify the odd one-out number from a given pair. There are no specific criteria for finding an odd one-out number from the pair, and there could be more than one answer. 

As far as the kids can justify their logic behind the odd one-out number in the pair, every answer is welcomed and accepted. A simple activity that will fill the class with waves of ideas and help kids view the same thing from different angles and reach conclusions in different yet correct ways.

Strategy 3 

A simple and interesting activity that is suitable for any age group and is a perfect way to facilitate classroom math conversations. Educators need an image or a visual that can be discussed mathematically.

Present the image to the children, and educators have to put up the questions based on that image that can be answered mathematically. No specific mathematical concept has to be targeted in the activity; rather, the concepts that kids are aware of and are based on their curriculum matter can be used. 

Additional activities to promote Number Talk 

Some additional activities that can promote number talk in developing kids and help them master math conversations are- 

1. Word problems 

Word problems are a wonderful tool to improve number talks in the classroom. Educators can provide simple word problems or math manipulatives to kids that can be mentally solved and discussed in the classroom. Mentally solving the word problems will allow one to analyze the problem in multiple ways and reach a meaningful conclusion. Further, kids can discuss how they came to the conclusion and what method they applied to reach the conclusion in the classroom with their peers and educators. 

2. Group discussions on numbers

Group discussions on numbers, such as composite numbers, divisibility rules, etc., and the different methods of calculating and studying these numbers or their uses in different areas are great ways to promote number talk in the classrooms. Educators can actively participate in these discussions with the children and direct the conversation on desired routes. 

3. Multiplication by mental math 

Multiplication by mental math or any other arithmetic operation using mental math is useful for facilitating number talk and improving calculation speed while solving math questions. For instance, multiply 320 by 8. Kids can directly solve it or break it into 300 and 20, multiply each by 8, and add both.

The results for both will be the same. Additionally, this can easily be solved mentally and discussed in the classroom. All kids require is logical thinking in math and a good command of arithmetic operations. 

Bottom line 

Number talk or math conversation is an essential part of elementary years and for the strong math foundations. It enables kids to independently work on the problems, assess and reassess different methods, and constantly improve themselves in mastering the basic number concepts.

Whether it is about counting money, reading date and time, or doing basic calculations, place value forms the foundation of comprehending numbers right. 

For the kids to develop an understanding of place value concepts, they need to bring flexibility in their learning and engage in logical thinking, rather than rote memorization of the concepts. However, little learners can sometimes find the place value lessons a bit boring and monotonous. 

To make the place value easy and fun for young minds, we have carefully drafted a systematic place value lesson plan to educate them on the fundamentals of place value. Before moving to the lesson plan, let’s cover some challenges that make place value challenging to kids.

Challenges faced by kids while learning place value

Place value is a significant math concept that is useful for mathematical computations. 1. Confusion between place value and face value 

Place value and face value are interrelated but, at the same time, are different from each other. Both are crucial for representing and calculating numbers and integers, but both have their own significance. Place value is the position of a particular digit in a number, whereas face value is the actual value of the number. For instance, 7645. Here, the place value of 7 is 7000, and the face value is 7. 

2. Difficulty making real-life associations 

Kids find most of the math concepts just theoretical and cannot see their practical use. Place value is one of those concepts. Although, in reality, place value holds an essential position in real life. Many daily-life tasks, such as counting money, wouldn’t be possible without place value. The inability to associate the concept with real-life uses leads to shallow learning and understanding of the concept.  

3. Use of decimals 

Finding the place value of natural numbers is comparatively easy. However, when kids are exposed to decimal values, they easily get overwhelmed and frustrated. Children find it confusing whether to check the place value of the digits before the decimal or after it and why not of both. Not only for elementary school kids, reading decimal values is a challenge for middle and high school students, too. 

4. Lack of systematic learning 

It is necessary to introduce place values gradually and systematically to young kids. The concept, though easy, can easily become complex and challenging. The large numbers and commas can be overwhelming for little learners and can cause confusion.

Place value follows a sequence of the values according to which a particular number is read and presented. Following and understanding this sequence creates confusion and adds to the difficulty for students. Hence, it is important to be detailed, systematic, and clear while explaining place values and the related concepts to the kids. 

A comprehensive lesson plan for place value 

A place value lesson plan is a thoughtfully designed plan curated to educate the kids on the basics of writing and reading the numbers. The lesson plan is structured to make children competent in numbers and reading them, regardless of how large or small the numbers may be. 

The place value lesson plan provides a comprehensive learning experience for little learners and involves two major sub-topics necessary for understanding the core of place values. The sub-topics involve- 

• Understanding the international system of place value 
• Understanding how to read numbers as per the international system of place value. 

Moving ahead, the lesson plan has some carefully thought-out objectives and is formulated according to the kid’s level of understanding and needs. The objectives of the place value lesson plan are- 

• Children will learn the concept of place value.
• Children will learn how to expand and write a number in the international place value system.
• Children will learn how to write numerals for expanded forms of different numbers. 

The lesson plan begins with an ice-breaker storytelling activity that will help educators set the pace of the learning and develop the environment required for teaching place value to the little learners. The ice-breaker activity is a sound way to intrigue kids and simultaneously provides an idea of the concept the lesson will cover: place values. 

Once kids know the concepts of ones, tens, and hundreds, we can move ahead to the fun yet educational place-value activities that are part of the lesson plan. 

Activity 1: 

This is the most simple yet crucial activity as it will test the understanding of the place value basics of the kids and will ensure that kids are set to move to more complex levels of place value concepts. 

There are various abacuses and numeral values given, and the space for ones, tens, and hundreds is provided in each abacus. Kids must draw the rings in each abacus as per the given values. 

For instance, 543. 

It can be segregated as 500, 40, and 3. 500 represents hundreds, 40 represents tens, and 3 represents ones. Accordingly, in the abacus, 5 rings will be drawn in H, 4 in T, and 3 in O. 

Activity 1 will lay the foundation for more complex levels of place value systems, such as thousands, ten thousand, and hundred thousand. Further, once this is clear, educators can enhance the level and introduce millions, ten million, and hundred million to the kids. 

Try to progress slowly at this stage, as the concept may sound easy, but the large values can easily confuse the kids. Introduce the larger values gradually and systematically and ensure that kids follow up at each level. 

The later activities in the lesson plan will test whether the kids have grasped the complex place value concepts or not. 

Activity 2: 

Activity 2 involves a place value chart that is easy to print or draw. Place value positions from one to billion are written horizontally in the chart, and some numerical values are given. Ask kids to read and insert those values in the chart based on the written place value positions. It is a wonderful activity to teach kids how to read the numerals and what is the magnitude of each number. 

Activity 3: 

Activity 3 is a great activity to educate kids on how to expand the numerical values. The activity involves a grid chart that is easy to print. Certain numerical values are given along with the grid that has to be inserted in the grid based on the international place value system. 

First, the given number has to be expanded, such as 567,432; the expanded form will be 500,000, 60,000, 7000, 400, 30, and 2. Now, this expanded form has to be carefully inserted into the grid. The activity will explain how numbers are positioned and what value each number holds. 

Activity 4: 

The activity further strengthens the understanding of expanded numbers of place value. In this activity, a number is given, and kids have to circle the correct answer from the three options relevant to the question. 

More precisely, from the given numeric value, a certain digit’s place value must be identified in its expanded form from the given options. The activity will strengthen the abilities required for reading the numbers accurately. 

Activity 5: 

The final activity of the place value lesson plan aims to assess if kids can accurately identify and write the compacted numeral values from the expanded form. In the activity, certain expanded forms of numerals are given, and kids must write them in numerical forms. 

The lesson plan is a wholesome plan that covers the basics and advanced levels of place value systems and focuses on different aspects of place value. After completing the place value lesson plan, students can successfully carry out place value-related mathematical operations in both theory and practical life.

Place value manipulatives are a great way to experiment with the concept and learn at one’s own pace. It provides freedom to the kids to assess the concept with their level of understanding and gain knowledge with trial and error and constant practice 

3. Place value activities 

Teaching kids place value is fun with place value activities. These activities allow kids to enjoy while learning one of the most important math concepts. Teachers can customize these activities and use them to introduce the concepts to the kids systematically. 

4. Place value games 

Plenty of place value board games, online games, online apps, and whatnot are available that are creatively designed for young learners to help them understand the basics of place value and, with enough practice, master the advanced level of place value concepts.

5. Real-life applications
