Reading Recovery is a program that provides early literacy intervention to first-grade students who are experiencing difficulties with reading and writing. It is based on the theory of literacy processing developed by Marie Clay, which suggests that learning to read and write involves several types of reading skills such as phonological awareness, letter-sound relationships, high-frequency words, and meaning-making strategies. These skills may be weak in students who struggle with reading and writing.

Reading Recovery offers personalized instruction to students over a period of 12-20 weeks, with the aim of addressing their weaknesses and helping them catch up with their peers. Specially trained teachers work one-on-one with students, using various strategies to develop their literacy skills. The program is designed to be intensive and short-term, helping struggling students build a solid foundation for successful reading and writing.

The program’s foundation is rooted in extensive research and is based on the belief that literacy development is an active and complex process that requires engaged learning. It also believes that all students can learn to read and write with the help of early intervention and personalized support. 

The debate over reading recovery: Concerns raised by international reading researchers

International reading scholars continue to question the efficacy of Reading Recovery, a prominent literacy intervention program for first graders. While the program has provided significant benefits to certain students, a subsequent study has revealed potential hazards and long-term repercussions. More than 30 international reading scholars^[1] have expressed reservations about the implementation of Reading Recovery, claiming that it is ineffective and leaves too many learners behind. However, some studies have refuted these assertions and emphasized the program’s potential benefits. 

While the Reading Recovery program has received praise for its ability to assist struggling students in catching up with their peers, there are concerns expressed by some scholars about its effectiveness. One criticism of the program is that it may not be effective for all students. While some students may see significant improvement in their reading abilities after completing the program, others may not.

Furthermore, Reading Recovery has been criticized for its high cost of implementation. The program requires substantial investments in resources, such as time, money, and personnel. Some individuals suggest that these resources could be better allocated toward other literacy interventions that have been proven to be more effective.

Despite these concerns, Reading Recovery also has a substantial number of supporters who assert that the program provides significant benefits. The argument concerning the efficacy of Reading Recovery is still ongoing, and there is no clear consensus.

According to Lorraine Hamma^[2], a senior lecturer at ECU suggests that while Reading Recovery has some positive effects when compared to no intervention or a mix of interventions, it would be more valuable to compare it with programs that align with reading science and have significant positive effects.

But some teachers had another experience, one of the qualitative study^[3] examines the perspectives and experiences of ten Reading Recovery teachers regarding the efficacy of the program as an early intervention for at-risk readers.

The study finds that while the program is well-regarded and implemented as originally prescribed, teachers are not confident about its ability to meet the needs of children with clinical conditions, such as specific reading difficulties. The study raises theoretical, ethical, and clinical implications regarding the suitability of the Reading Recovery program for low-progress readers.

What current studies conclude about Reading Recovery

While many reading games and activities are used for primary students, Reading Recovery is designed to help struggling readers While the program has shown promising results in improving reading skills for some students, a growing body of research suggests that its effectiveness may be limited for others.

A study^[4] conducted by James James W. Chapman and William E. Tuner in a classroom found that while some students showed significant improvement after participating in Reading Recovery, others did not experience the same level of success. This was particularly true for struggling students who had difficulty recognizing letters and sounds.

Similarly, a UK-based study^[5] suggested that the program’s effectiveness could be increased by adopting a more individualized approach and placing greater emphasis on teaching letter and sound recognition. The study also highlighted the importance of systemic interventions and whole-school initiatives to support the program’s effectiveness.

Moreover, a recent federally funded study^[6] reported lower state reading test results for third and fourth-grade students who received Reading Recovery compared to those who did not receive the program. These findings provoke important questions about the effectiveness of Reading Recovery and the broader educational context in which it operates.

On the other side, one of the qualitative reports^[7] provided information about a program evaluation for the Reading Recovery program in Maine. Open-ended questionnaires were used to assess the Reading Recovery program, where response rates ranged extremely high from 76% to 100%, The program received generally favorable reviews and support from respondents across all groups, but funding and accessibility for more students were both raised as issues. 

Alternatives to reading recovery methods

Alternative strategies might be more suited to the needs of some students. Here are a few instances:

• Phonics-based methods: These methods put a lot of emphasis on teaching letter and sound recognition, a fundamental reading skill. Popular phonics-based curricula include Orton-Gillingham, Wilson Reading System, and Phonics First.

• Multisensory methods: These multisensory approach use a number of senses, including sight, sound, and touch, to aid students in remembering information. Programs like Lindamood-Bell and Visualising and Verbalising are examples of multisensory instruction.

• Approaches based on technology: Technology can be a fun and useful tool for enhancing literacy results. Programs that rely on technology include Raz-Kids, Lexia, and Headsprout.

Collaboration between teachers, parents, and students is a key component of these methods for creating individualized plans that support literacy development, and guided reading strategies that help students to learn better.

Verdict

As of right now, it is impossible to make a definitive judgment about Reading Recovery’s effectiveness as a literacy intervention program. While some studies have documented successful results for particular students, others have expressed concerns about the program’s insufficient efficacy, high cost, and requirement for greater individualization.

Overall, a number of variables, including the particular needs of the students, the resources available, and the way the program is implemented, determine whether or not Reading Recovery is a good program. To offer the best assistance to struggling readers, it is crucial to take into account a variety of literacy interventions and evidence-based techniques that are in line with the most recent findings in reading science.

How to plan a perfect summer camp? 

Planning a summer camp is not as challenging a task as it seems. In a few steps, you can plan a wonderful summer camp for young kids. Steps like- 

1. Objectives 

First thing first. Identify the objectives that you wish to cover during the tenure of the summer camps. Formulate broad as well as sub-objectives that are attainable, meaningful, and related to the camp theme. 

2. Activities

What is an IEP?

The Individual Education Program Plan (IEP) is a written plan created by the special education department of the school, along with inputs from parents. The plan specifies the student’s academic goals and the method to achieve them. The law IDEA mandates that the school district brings together parents, students, general teachers, special educators, and other specialists to make decisions that would be reflected in the IEP.

The IEP is created and shared with the child’s guardians a week before the meeting. The IEP team is encouraged to ask questions, request modifications, and change goals within reasons. It will focus on the area of disabilities and how it affects the educational and emotional well-being of the child. 

IDEIA (Individuals With Disabilities Education Improvement Act, 2014) is a federal law designed to spell out how the local education authority (LEA) will attend to the deficits identified in the Evaluation Report (ER). It will define how the programs will be provided, who and where the services will be provided, and how the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) will be created for the child.

Along with LRE, the plan will list out the adaptations required. It may also mention the modification to the curriculum needed by the child to flourish academically. The IEP also designates services required by the child to function better. This may include services like speech pathology, physical therapy, or occupational therapy. The plan also creates a transition plan for the students when they reach the age of sixteen. 

IEPs are a part of public education, though they cannot follow the student to college. Kids aged 3 and up attending public school are eligible for IEP. Non-school-going babies and toddlers can get services through early intervention. To be eligible for an IEP, a student must have one or more of the 13 conditions covered under IDEA, which also distort their ability to learn and grow like their peers. 

What is an ILP?

Individual Learning Plans, or ILPs, are achieving traction as a plan for encouraging students’ college and career readiness and success. ILPs are also known as student success plans, academic and career plans, and individual career and academic plans. These student-directed plans developed with teachers, counselors, and parents document students’ academic and career interests.

ILPs are not recent developments but have been around since the 1990s, with West Virginia being one of the early adopters of the plan. The recent mandate by 704 KAR 3305 demands that the individual learning plan for each student’s development be established within the first 3 months of the sixth-grade year. The plan must be focused on career exploration, post-secondary education, and training needs. 

The ILP has various features and resources that engage students on multiple levels:

• Scouting careers starting in the 6th grade
• Discovering occupations that correspond to their aptitudes and interests
• Making education plans
• Setting personal goals and reviewing these as they advance through school
• Forming, maintaining, and revising resumes
• Tracking and meditating on their employment experiences, community service experiences, career-planning activities, and extra-curricular and organizational training
• Researching colleges and post-secondary prospects that fit their career, after-school, and life goals
• Connecting to organizations for help with college planning, scholarships, fee assistance information, and applications
• Gathering personal information like examination results, advising activities, demographic data, and academic record

A study by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy has shown ILPs as a powerful tool that helps students become more involved in their educational experience. The paper suggests practices supporting ILP implementation, including access to online career information systems, professional growth, ILP curricula, and inclusion.

The research shows the significance of ensuring family engagement. Furthermore, research suggests that ILP implementation results in higher aspirations and greater engagement in school. Positive attention and involvement of caretakers in ILP are linked with student accomplishment as calculated by grades, standardized test scores, and increased graduation rates.

ILPs represent both a procedure and a tool to record that procedure. As a procedure, ILPs entitle learners to scour post-secondary opportunities, recognizing and characterizing career interests and the aptitudes required for career success. Along with the guidance of guardians, school teachers, and counselors, the students set intentional out-of-school goals. These include goals like getting work, apprenticeships, technical schools, college, military service, internships, and other necessary supports that align with career and life goals.

The ILP process records students’ advancement and transitions through middle, high, and post-secondary classes while satisfying their educational, employment, and personal goals. The ILP document will be reevaluated annually to create informed post-secondary goals by reviewing assessments and activities in which learners have participated throughout the years. Finally, this process conveys whether students are fulfilling their purposes and are successfully moving toward graduation. 

ILPs are also a tool to record and track student advancement and achievement of skills. The ILP document echoes the developmental stage of the learner. Examples of the range of information that an ILP may record include:

• Present and past classes, activities, and hobbies
• Grades, test scores, and results from career aptitude assessments
• Personal goal statements
• College financial planning activities like applying for scholarships, or tuition relief

Key similarities 

1. Eligibility

Both programs promise to serve the best interest of the students, with slight differences in implementation and particular goals. The IEP can be claimed by any school-going child with a disability aged three and above. If the toddler is not school-going, they can still get an IEP through early intervention. IEP has to be created within a month of the child being found eligible and then carried on to the future academic years.

The ILP is mandatory for all school-going students entering sixth grade. It has to be created within three months of entering the school. Similar to IEP, ILP shall be carried on to the higher classes with changes according to the interest and growth of the child. All school-going children have a right to ILP or IEP according to their needs and requirements.

2. Documentation and Goals

Like the IEP, ILP is also a documented plan made in collaboration with students, parents, and the school. Both the ILP and IEP include a process and tools to assess and document student skills and interests. Just like IEP, ILPs require that plans be updated regularly (usually annually) to ensure that plans remain appropriate for any emerging student interests and goals.  In terms of goals, both ILPs and IEPs focus on academic goals and career-related personal goals. 

3. Transition Services

Both ILP and IEP offer transition planning to adolescent kids getting ready to venture into the adult phase of their lives. ILP as a plan is designed to cater to transition planning, while IEP is more holistic. Regardless, IEP has a transition plan built into the program for students with disabilities who avail of IEP services. In both the plans the transition programme and discussion begin when the child reaches sixteen years old.

It can be started earlier if need be. The IEP transition plan and ILP transition plan are created by the education staff who assist with counseling, identifying vocational interests, educational and vocational planning, goal setting, pre-vocational skills training, academic support, and links to specific programs and services. Students eligible for special education intervention can have an ILP and an IEP. 

The goals in the IEP transition plan and ILP transition plan identify what a learner wants to do or accomplish after high school. Objectives can be in four areas:

1. Vocational training (e.g., learning a trade)
2. Post-secondary education (e.g., college or other form of schooling)
3. Careers and Employment
4. Independent living, if required (usually for Students with Special Needs)

Once transition goals are set, the team will decide what assistance a student needs to meet goals. Here are a few examples of the services:

• Instruction (including special education)
• Related services
• Community experiences, like volunteer work
• Career and college counseling
• Help with daily living skills, if required (usually for Students with Special Needs)

As a student gets older, they prepare for the change to adulthood. At least a year before a teen turns the age of majority — 18 in most states — the team must start preparing for the transfer of IEP or ILP documents. Students who graduate from or leave high school also get a performance summary. This document lists academic and functional skills. It also offers recommendations for achieving post-secondary goals.

Significant differences

Final thoughts

IEP and ILP are essential tools for learners and guardians to ensure they get the best out of the education system. These plans were created to ensure that all access to quality education was made fair and available. They create an environment conducive to the student’s academic growth, make learning fun, and guarantee a path to happy schooling and subsequent higher education.

IEP and ILP give rights to parents and students to claim for the plan and are federally protected. It also helps to make schools and other educational institutions accountable for delivering the services promised and mandated. It must be noted that once the schooling of the child is done IEP or ILP stops and so do transition planning services. However, if transition planning is done properly and the goals are accomplished satisfactorily, the young person should be equipped to take on the next phases of adulthood with relative ease.

For a person to develop competence in math, one also requires a few exclusive cognitive skills and abilities, which he referred to as ‘competencies.’ These mathematical competencies Niss talked about are the highlight of this blog post, which we will be covering in a simple and easy-to-understand format.

What do we mean by ‘mathematical competence’?

Generally, being competent at something means being good at it. Because you have learned and practiced a lot in that sphere of life, you can easily handle related situations that appear in front of you. 

Having mathematical competence or being competent in math is based on similar lines. However, it is a lot more than just being able to perform mathematical calculations quickly using mental math. It is a person’s ability to understand and use their knowledge of math in different situations with an element of math in it.

So, when we say that a person is mathematically competent, it means they are really good at understanding, judging, doing, and using math in multiple situations that appear in their everyday lives and where math has a role to play.

During his research^[1], Niss characterized eight competencies as distinct elements of an individual’s mathematical competence. He further divided the eight competencies into two groups:

Group 1: Competencies related to one’s ability to “ask and answer questions in and with mathematics”

Group 2: Competencies related to one’s ability to “manage mathematical language and tools”

Group 1 Competencies:

1. Mathematical thinking

This competency is about having the ability to put forward questions and having an idea of the kinds of answers one can obtain mathematically. It is about understanding the scope and limitations of a mathematical concept and handling it accordingly. Furthermore, it also includes extending the scope of a mathematical concept by abstracting and generalizing results and distinguishing between various mathematical statements.

2. Mathematical problem solving

This competency involves two aspects of mathematics. First is the person’s ability to identify and specify mathematical problems they come across. The second is to solve varied mathematical problems that are presented by other people or by themselves.

3. Mathematical modeling

Modeling mathematically is a competency that allows a person to analyze existing mathematical models and interpret their different elements. It also supports them in performing active modeling, which comprises activities like building, validating, analyzing, monitoring, and communicating the results of the entire process.

4. Mathematical reasoning

The competency of mathematical logical reasoning helps an individual evaluate arguments suggested by others, uncover the basic idea, and devise and transform opinions into proving statements. It also supports one’s understanding of a given mathematical proof and how it differs from other kinds of reasoning.

Group 2 Competencies:

1. Representing mathematical entities

Having representation competency helps a person understand and use a wide variety of representations for mathematical purposes. It helps one understand and acknowledge the possibility of different representations of the same entity and allows the person to utilize varied representations and switch between them as needed.

2. Handling symbols and formalisms

Mathematical language is not the same as natural language. With this competency, an individual can understand the rules of a formal mathematical expression, decode and interpret standard mathematical language, translate natural language to formal mathematical language, and work with expressions containing mathematical formulae and symbols.

3. Communication

This competency helps a person understand different types of materials (written, oral, and visual) containing mathematics-related content. It also allows the person to express themselves adequately when it comes to matters about math.

4. Using aids and tools

The last competency Niss discussed is using tools for mathematical purposes. Having good competency in this area means a person is knowledgeable about the tools required to conduct a mathematical activity and is able to use them effectively in different circumstances.

Relationship between mathematical competencies and math literacy

The fact that mathematical competencies are as important as mathematical knowledge and skills, these are strongly related to the development and enhancement of math literacy. Without the activation of mathematical competencies, it would be difficult to utilize mathematical knowledge to solve problems.

Another aspect of establishing a relationship between competencies and math literacy is that both are directly related. The more a person possesses and activates mathematical competencies, the better equipped they will be to apply their knowledge to solve mathematical challenges. On the other hand, the fewer mathematical competencies they possess, the lower will be their ability to work on problems demanding strong math literacy.

Therefore, besides teaching mathematical concepts in classrooms, schools and educators must work on fostering these competencies in their students. These competencies prove helpful in comprehending mathematical information existing in the world. For example, a study^[2] established mathematical competencies required to interpret COVID-19 pandemic information and found five competencies that one must possess.

One way of promoting these competencies is by consciously incorporating a multitude of activities that can initiate and stimulate the eight mathematical competencies in students’ minds. This will nudge them to get on the path of developing solid mathematical proficiency.  

A quick summary of various mathematical competencies

Final thoughts

The eight mathematical competencies characterized by Mogens Niss are fundamental to developing mathematical literacy. Our intrinsic mathematical competencies activate whenever we are in a situation requiring us to face a mathematical challenge. But which of the eight competencies is activated depends on the challenge we face. Therefore, it is said that different activities trigger different sets of competencies in an individual.

For this reason, there is no single standardized math assessment that can reliably evaluate all eight mathematical competencies together. For a comprehensive assessment, there is a need for a wide range of mathematical activities that can activate all competencies so they can be evaluated effectively for an individual.

In his work, he challenged the prevailing idea, suggesting that intelligence is not a single capacity that humans have to varying degrees. In fact, intelligence prevails in different forms in different people. This means people can be skilled in different areas, with one person exhibiting linguistic intelligence and the other exhibiting logical-mathematical intelligence.

Taking the idea of multiple intelligences forward, Gardner presented a novel view of creativity in his book “Creating Minds,” wherein he examined extraordinary individuals with outstanding intelligence like Albert Einstein, Pablo Picasso, Sigmund Freud, Mahatma Gandhi, and more. Gardner’s multiple intelligence theory has inspired educators and school leaders to embrace the fact that children can be intelligent in many ways. His view on creativity has provided more thoughtful insights, which we will talk about in this article today.

Howard Gardner’s perspective on creativity

Gardner’s view^[1] on creativity is unique in its own way. According to him, creativity occurs when a person comes up with something new that might seem odd at first but is acknowledged and accepted by knowledgeable people. The conclusive test is when the invention brings about a significant change in the domain it belongs to.

He also emphasizes that although creativity and intelligence are correlated, they differ from one another. Usually, creative people are perceived to think divergently, and intelligent people are perceived to think with a narrow vision, concentrating on figuring out the right answer.

So, contrary to the thought that intelligent people are equally creative, it is possible that people with high intelligence can have not-so-impressive creative skills, and others may be impressively creative but have lower intelligence.

Gardner’s examples of people with extraordinary creativity

In his book, ‘Creating Minds,’ Gardner studied the traits of seven extraordinary people known for their achievements in their domain and had one of the intelligences he talked about. He noted that creativity is domain-specific and is possible only when an individual works in a specific field or domain.

The seven personalities he examined were blessed with one or more types of intelligence, using which they could make extraordinary achievements in their respective domains. The names of the seven prominent personalities are:

• Albert Einstein with logical-mathematical intelligence
• T.S. Eliot with linguistic intelligence
• Sigmund Freud with intrapersonal intelligence
• Pablo Picasso with spatial intelligence
• Igor Stravinsky with musical intelligence
• Mahatma Gandhi with interpersonal intelligence
• Martha Graham with bodily-kinesthetic intelligence

While closely examining these seven individuals, Gardner found some significant similarities and differences. To begin with, each one rejected standard practices and was open to trying out new things. Their intelligence was not restricted to only one domain. In fact, they had more than average ability in other domains as well. 

These creative individuals also needed cognitive support from those who believed their efforts would lead them to a new discovery and effective support from those who loved them and did not consider their efforts senseless. These seven creative individuals were also demanding and highly absorbed in their work for a long time. 

Talking about differences, one that Gardner pointed out is that each of them exhibited differences in thinking, which was visible in their thought processes to make outstanding achievements.

Characteristics of creative individuals that set them apart 

According to Howard Gardner, the definition of a creative individual is – 

“A creative individual is a person who regularly solves problems, fashions products, or defines new questions in a domain in a way that is initially considered novel but that ultimately becomes accepted in a particular cultural setting.”

Howard Gardner identified three main characteristics of creative individuals who achieved breakthroughs that were not prominent in other people. 

• These individuals have deep domain knowledge.
• They are open to taking risks.
• They create or invent something when it is needed and are willing to defend it if necessary.

1. Promoting creativity in schools

Gardner states that even though creativity is vital, it is not encouraged as much in an average school, though some progressive schools might promote it. The reason behind this is that creative students who do not follow traditional practices and are eager to try new things may cause disruption in the learning environment.

Hence, most educators prefer students to develop creativity outside the classroom in extracurricular classes. Because providing a creative environment for students has many benefits, Gardner suggests a few tips to promote creativity:

• Encourage children to try new things.
• Tell them it is okay to take chances, and they won’t be rejected for doing things in a different way.
• Let them know about the limitations of the chances they can take.
• Instill discipline, but allow some freedom to kids who try things differently than their peers.
• Encourage them to identify things they enjoy doing and can get better at.

2. Gardner’s view on developing creativity at an early age

Early childhood is the time when children naturally exhibit creativity. They are willing to try new things, take risks, make observations, and draw conclusions. But in order to make extraordinary achievements, children need domain-specific knowledge, which can be obtained through classroom learning. 

So, according to Gardner, allowing children to explore and be creative is important in the early years. This should be followed by focusing on acquiring basic skills during the middle school years, and finally combining skills and creativity during adolescence to come up with something new.

Concluding thoughts

Howard Gardner’s thoughts on creativity are indeed unique. Looking through his lens, we see that creativity is not restricted to art forms and is prevalent in every domain. He has provided us with a fresh perspective on the characteristics of creative individuals and how important it is to promote creativity in children. 

Deriving from his thoughts, parents and educators must employ a strategic approach wherein they encourage kids to be creative and acquire the basic knowledge and skills they need so that they can put their creativity to proper use and bring innovative solutions to the table.

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support, or PBIS, was therefore introduced with the aim of creating a better approach to support student behavior and achieve better outcomes. In this write-up, we will discuss what PBIS is all about and see a few examples of how educators can implement it in their classrooms. So, let’s get started!

What is positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS)?

PBIS is a proactive, evidence-based approach implemented in schools and other learning environments to promote positive student behavior. The main purpose behind PBIS is to improve behavioral, emotional, social, and academic outcomes for students of all grades, irrespective of their backgrounds and learning abilities.

The approach focuses on preventing negative behavior and providing support and interventions to students who are more likely to display difficult behaviors even before they appear. By improving the social-emotional competence of students, educators create a safe and positive learning environment that ensures academic success.

PBIS, initially known as the Effective Behavior Supports program, was developed in the late 1990s by researchers Rob Horner and George Sugai. At present, the Center on PBIS is the entity that supports the implementation of this multi-tiered approach in various schools across the country. It is funded by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Special Education Programs and the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Features of PBIS

Schools can implement PBIS in specific learning environments or all across the school. When the method is implemented in the entire school, it is known as School-Wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (SWPBIS). Some features that are typical of schools following the PBIS approach are as follows:

1. They employ a series of evidence-based practices to teach positive behaviors and support students who are in need.
2. There is a clear set of behavioral expectations for students, which they are made aware of and taught explicitly.
3. Schools engage students and families to come up with culturally responsive strategies and activities.
4. Schools seek help to ensure the smooth implementation of the approach.
5. Schools regularly evaluate the effectiveness of their strategies and methods.
6. They use data collected over time to analyze student progress.
7. Schools organize professional development sessions for educators to gain expertise in PBIS.
8. They work consistently to create a positive school climate and reinforce positive behaviors.

The PBIS Framework: A tiered approach to encourage positive student behavior

PBIS works by providing a continuum of interventions that support student-specific needs. These supports are offered in the areas of behavioral, emotional, social, and academic aspects. In order to implement these interventions and supports in an effective manner, PBIS follows a three-tiered approach.  

1. Tier 1

This includes all the systems and practices meant to support everyone who is part of a school setting, like students, teachers, and school staff. Every student learns about behavior expectations and tries to follow them. The role of teachers and school staff is to recognize good behavior and appreciate students. They are also responsible for preventing difficult behaviors and managing them respectfully if they arise.

2. Tier 2

Systems and practices belonging to Tier 2 are meant to provide targeted support based on a student’s specific needs. It is estimated that 10–15% of students need Tier 2 support to encourage positive behavior outcomes. Interventions comprising Tier 2 of the PBIS framework include regular prompts, more adult supervision, more practice of behavioral skills, frequent communication with family, and so on.  

3. Tier 3

Tier 3 is all about providing intensive interventions and support to individual students. Students who do not respond well to tier 1 and tier 2 interventions receive tier 3 support in addition to that of tiers 1 and 2. These are available to all students who need individualized attention, irrespective of whether they have special needs or not. Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA), counseling, family group conferencing, special class placements, and therapy are some of the supports schools provide at tier 3 intervention.

Benefits of implementing PBIS in a school setting

It is true that implementing PBIS in a school needs time, resources, and teacher training, but many schools are now open to incorporating it into the way they function because its benefits far outweigh the efforts. Here are some positives of adopting PBIS that schools can’t ignore.

• It improves the overall school environment and the safety of students.
• There are fewer instances of disciplinary actions and suspensions.
• Students develop the necessary social and emotional skills.
• Teachers enjoy better classroom management.
• Teachers spend less time managing behavior issues and more time on classroom instruction.
• All this has a positive impact on the academic performance of students.

Examples of positive behavior intervention strategies

1. Setting clear expectations and routines

When students know what’s expected of them, they are more likely to exhibit such behaviors. Also, many negative behaviors are a result of fear and anxiety. Having visuals like printable positive classroom behaviors list and setting routines so students know what’s happening next can reduce these feelings and indirectly promote good behavior.

2. Offer breaks as and when needed

A short break of up to five minutes can help students self-regulate and avoid inappropriate behaviors when they are overwhelmed by constant school activities. Simple activities like deep breathing, meditation, movement breaks or brain breaks can give students an opportunity to recharge and reconnect.

3. Establish signals to convey messages

Signals are a great way to tell students when they are getting off track. Rather than speaking out loud and disturbing the entire class, teachers can create signals and let the students know what they mean. The moment a student or students need a quick intervention, use these signals to remind them how they’re expected to behave.

4. Maintain proximity to students

Sometimes, getting a little close to students is enough to remind them if they are going wrong somewhere. This works best when students are given a task, and teachers want them to concentrate. Walking around the classroom to get close to every student can ensure they focus on their work rather than getting distracted.

5. Redirect unwanted behavior

Teachers can use verbal redirection to correct student behavior and avoid power struggles. Letting them know what they are doing wrong and how they can make it right is a gentle way of promoting positive behaviors. Or, redirecting students to do something else the moment you see them acting out is another excellent approach to handling behavior challenges. Things like asking the student to deliver a note to another teacher or act as a peer helper to shift their focus can help them get back to their normal self.

6. Use positive language

The use of positive language can encourage students to display positive behaviors. Rephrase your message to tell students what they should do instead of telling them what they shouldn’t. Also, positive reinforcement and positive comments used in parent-teacher conferences can encourage students to behave properly.  

7. Praise openly, discipline privately

Disciplining publicly can sometimes have a negative impact on student behavior, as no one likes to be told about their weaknesses in front of everyone. It may help to talk to a student privately, tell them their areas for improvement, and praise them openly when they display positive behaviors.

Concluding thoughts

People who are unaware of PBIS often misunderstand its purpose. They consider it a punishment program to target students with behavioral problems. However, the fact is that PBIS is not a punishment-focused program and tries to incorporate minimal disciplinary actions. It is more about promoting positive behaviors in the entire student population of a school, not just those who have behavioral problems.

Of course, implementing PBIS in schools requires teacher training, but it is not something very difficult to manage. Many programs and resources are available to help school staff get the necessary training so they can ensure smooth implementation.

Last but not least, it would be wrong to consider PBIS a foolproof way of handling inappropriate student behaviors. No program or technique can get you perfect student behavior all the time. However, evidence^[1] reveals that when implemented correctly, PBIS decreases negative student behavior and helps address issues as soon as they become apparent, so they don’t end up requiring intensive interventions in the future.

In our last blog post, we discussed the characteristics and examples of fluid intelligence. And today, we will explore the characteristics of crystallized intelligence that set it apart from fluid intelligence. We will also see a few examples that showcase how we employ crystallized intelligence to navigate our daily lives.

Unique characteristics of crystallized intelligence

1. Based on past knowledge and experiences

Crystallized intelligence is the culmination of a person’s prior education, learning, and experiences. It utilizes the wisdom we accumulate as we grow older. When we are in a situation or encounter a problem, we use our crystallized intelligence or accumulated knowledge to deal with it or find solutions.

2. Has a strong cultural influence

Crystallized intelligence is highly influenced by our cultural interactions. Our vocabulary, language proficiency, and cultural nuances, which are all a part of our crystallized intelligence, are impacted by the culture we belong to and the ones we are exposed to in our lifetime.

3. Helps build domain-specific expertise

When we explore and learn about specific subjects, our crystallized intelligence expands and helps us develop domain-specific expertise. This acquired knowledge allows us to make valuable contributions in specific fields. Without crystallized intelligence, becoming an expert will be a hard nut to crack.  

4. Thrives on continuous learning

Building crystallized intelligence entails lifelong learning. As we age, our crystallized intelligence keeps developing as we learn new things and gather knowledge through education and life experiences. Because human intellectual growth is an ongoing journey, individuals should never stop learning and refining their various cognitive skills and abilities.

5. Supports problem-solving

Unlike the case of fluid intelligence, where individuals come up with on-the-spot strategies to deal with problems without depending on their prior knowledge, our crystallized intelligence offers us a rich reservoir of knowledge that we can use to figure things out.

6. Improves with age

Crystallized intelligence is known to improve with age, even when you’re in your 60s, and remains largely preserved in the later stages of life. So you can imagine the extent of crystallized intelligence you develop in your lifetime. This large expanse of knowledge is what gives you the ability to deal with situations effectively.  

Examples showing the application of crystallized intelligence

1. Students who consistently demonstrate academic excellence have deep-rooted crystallized intelligence. It encompasses knowledge about vocabulary use, subject matter, and comprehension, which enables them to perform well in school.

2. Surgeons are endowed with robust crystallized intelligence. Their medical knowledge and experience, which they accumulate through years of practice, allow them to perform complex procedures and make decisions based on their prior experiences to achieve positive patient outcomes.

3. Creative writing involves the use of crystallized intelligence in the form of vocabulary usage and literary skills one has acquired through learning. It also allows us to draw creativity and inspiration from prior experiences to write an engaging piece for the readers.

4. Teachers depend on their crystallized intelligence to guide students and explain concepts. Without prior knowledge of the lesson, it will be impossible for teachers to provide educational instruction.

5. People in leadership positions hone high levels of crystallized intelligence. They are able to make informed decisions, offer advice, and guide their teammates by drawing insights from the immense knowledge and expertise they already have.

6. Expert cooks rely on their crystallized intelligence to make delectable recipes. Their long-term experience in cooking helps them remember recipes and make necessary adjustments to cook a perfect dish every single time.

7. The reason why you can reach your school, office, or any other familiar place without getting lost is that you apply your crystallized intelligence to draw information on which route you must take to reach your destination. Because you have the knowledge and experience of traveling on the same route every day, it comes to you naturally without any effort.

8. Playing trivia questions also requires you to utilize your crystallized intelligence. Recollecting facts and details to answer trivia questions depends on existing knowledge of a wide range of topics.

9. Your vocabulary knowledge is also an example of crystallized intelligence. It grows over the years while you go to school, read a wide variety of subjects, play fun online vocabulary games, or participate in multiple vocabulary-building activities.

10. Participating in a poem recitation competition also requires strong crystallized intelligence. When you learn a poem by heart and present it in front of an audience, your crystallized intelligence comes into action.

Ways to enhance crystallized intelligence

Crystallized intelligence is all about acquired knowledge and skills. If you want to improve your crystallized intelligence, you need to work on gathering new information and learning new skills. In childhood, our crystallized intelligence is fueled by education and cultural experiences. But as an adult, how much you are able to improve your intelligence depends on how motivated you are to build your skills and knowledge. A few ways to level up your crystallized intelligence are as follows:

1. Read as much as possible. Try to include diverse subjects because the more you read, the more knowledge you acquire.
2. Take on new tasks that require you to apply your past knowledge and gain new information.
3. Engage with different cultures to gather perspectives and broaden your crystallized intelligence.
4. Embrace continuous learning to engage your mind and keep your curiosity levels high, so you’re always open to learning new things.
5. Challenge your cognitive abilities by participating in skill-building activities. It will help expand your knowledge and, in turn, improve your crystallized intelligence.

The intersection of crystallized and fluid intelligence

A person cannot rely solely on one form of intelligence. They need both fluid and crystallized intelligence to perform optimally in all spheres of life. When we are born, all we have is fluid intelligence. But as we grow and learn, our crystallized intelligence begins to expand through exposure, learning, and experience.

From this moment on, our brain utilizes both fluid and crystallized intelligence, depending on what we are doing. If there is a new problem, our fluid intelligence helps us find creative ideas to solve it. But if it is something we have dealt with before, our crystallized intelligence acts like a treasure full of knowledge from which we can derive useful information to address the issue at hand.

Hence, we can conclude that fluid and crystallized intelligence may be different, but they work as a team to make our thinking strong. Applying them at the right time makes our brains work best to handle the different challenges we encounter in our daily lives.

In conclusion

Our crystallized intelligence encompasses all we learn and experience throughout our lives. That’s the reason why crystallized intelligence keeps increasing throughout adulthood. This stability of knowledge instills a sense of confidence in us and provides assurance that we are capable of handling situations that come our way.

It also contributes to our personal growth and establishes our unique identities as we follow our own unique learning curves. As crystallized intelligence has a significant impact on our personal and professional growth, it is important that we recognize and nurture it in the best possible manner so we can enjoy a fulfilling life journey.
