<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Algebra and Calculus both belong to different branches of mathematics but are closely related to each other. Applying basic algebraic formulas and equations, we can find solutions to many of our day-to-day problems.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Calculus is mostly applied in professional fields due to its capacity for finding solutions to many types of structures. Algebraic formulas and concepts are used in solving almost all mathematical problems including arithmetic, trigonometry, and Calculus, apart from their use in finding solutions to problems of other branches of science and technology.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Although these branches of math are indispensable, they can get very intimidating for beginners.<a href="https://numberdyslexia.com/active-vs-reflective-learning-methods/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-wpel-link="internal"> Alternative methods of teaching </a>like games and activities might help to make it more interesting for the learner.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-vivid-green-cyan-color has-text-color"><strong>Algebra vs. Calculus: Basic difference</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Although Algebra and Calculus are interrelated, there is a definite difference between the two.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Calculus deals with operations on functions and their derivatives, whereas algebra deals with operations on variables and numbers. Algebra assists in finding the slope of a line, while calculus is useful for finding the slope of a curve. Algebra helps in finding the direction of motion along a straight line, whereas calculus does the same along any curve.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Algebra is based on the goal of operations on equations, often with the intent of solving for unknown values. Calculus is where we begin to quantify complex relationships. Calculus is all based on change. We mainly use limits, derivates, and integrals. Limits simply ask what value y approaches as x approaches some value. Derivates are the way that we find a function’s rate of change at a given moment. An integral is a mathematical object that can be interpreted as an area or a generalization of an area.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-vivid-green-cyan-color has-text-color"><strong>Difficulties a student might face while studying Algebra</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Some students might find it difficult to understand the concepts of algebra. Like, finding it difficult to solve the problems or finding it hard to remember the formulas and equations. While the reasons could be many, the solution is one- Practice!</p>

Hence the nonvisual concept of algebra seems difficult.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Algebra can be quite confusing for students as it often contains a lot of rules that seem arbitrary. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Integral Calculus is used to calculate the quantity where the rate of change is known. For example, we can calculate the predicted population of a country if we know the birth rate even if it changes over time. We can calculate how much fuel a rocket will need to get to the moon and a car to get to the petrol station if we know its velocity and acceleration over the time required.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Algebra is the building block on which most mathematics is built. It uses letters and symbols to replace actual numbers in formulae to make them applicable across multiple scenarios. For example, by using v= u + at we can calculate the predicted velocity of any car at any time if we know its starting velocity, its acceleration, and the time it has been accelerating.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It enters our lives in high school and almost looks like a concept from an alien world. The fact remains true that many students feel anxious about transitioning to calculus. Thankfully, there are manipulatives available that can help replace anxiety with curiosity and make the introductory phase pleasing for calculus beginners.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In this post, let&#8217;s explore the engaging manipulatives that calculus beginners can use to grasp concepts like integration, differentiation, etc. Before jumping on to the list, let&#8217;s talk about the reasons manipulatives have risen to glory among calculus teachers and learners.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-vivid-green-cyan-color has-text-color"><strong>Using manipulatives: How it is changing calculus class environment</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Teaching calculus to beginners at the high school level feels challenging. Students find it difficult to relate the concepts to real-life situations around them. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Aaron Wangberg of Winona State University came forth with the idea of creating dry-erase surfaces to use as manipulatives. He explains in the <a href="https://www.mathvalues.org/masterblog/2019/5/21/holding-calculus-in-your-hands" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow external" data-wpel-link="external">interview</a> how he found these surfaces quite useful and practical to apply in introducing multivariable calculus to students. These surfaces proved effective in learning gradients and partial derivatives. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Usually, the students can employ a formula to find the gradient vector, but they cannot manipulate where it actually points. This hands-on manipulative allowed the students to experiment with different values and they were astounded to find that the gradient vector points in the same direction irrespective of the changes in data. Thus, this manipulative helped fill the gap in the practical application of the concept. Wangberg evolved this idea further and finally created more sophisticated models that are now used in various institutions. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A yardstick is placed against the wall to measure the bounce height. You will find that the bounce height reduces gradually till the ball comes to a stop. Taft and showed how Calculus can be learned from real-life objects and simple activities. <h3 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center" style="font-size:24px"><strong>5. Accordion Figures</strong></h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Accordion figures are nothing but two cardboard-based joined by accordion-design-based tissue paper. The study<sup>[<a href="https://dash.harvard.edu/bitstream/handle/1/33797357/RIVERO-DOCUMENT-2016.pdf?sequence=1&amp;isAllowed=y" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow external" data-wpel-link="external">4</a>]</sup> on how to use manipulatives to teach Calculus and Trigonometry functions used these Accordion figures to understand their impact on teaching volumes of solids. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Accordion figures can be transformed into various figures such as cones, spheres, etc. Using these figures, the students could convincingly agree to the fact that the integral they used was indeed helpful in finding the volumes of solids. Thus, integration and its use in calculating volumes of solids become easier to learn with manipulatives.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-vivid-green-cyan-color has-text-color"><strong>Summing up,</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Manipulatives enter our lives at the pre-primary level of education and refuse to lose their relevance at all advanced stages. While the <a href="https://numberdyslexia.com/9-manipulatives-to-teach-counting-to-little-learners/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-wpel-link="internal">counting manipulatives </a>and those used to teach math operations to little learners are mostly toy-based or have a gamified look, calculus students can find easy learning support in things of daily use as well.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They have also played a crucial part in enhancing learning methods, modernizing real-life solutions, and introducing aspects that have changed the face of tools and types of equipment.
