It transforms math into an exhilarating adventure, where students build fluency, sharpen problem-solving skills, and unlock the secrets of numerical wizardry. Through targeted practice, mathematical doors swing open, revealing the beauty and logic that lie within.

So, join us under the big top of mathematics, where the drill and practice teaching method reigns supreme. Let’s embark on this extraordinary journey, where numbers become our allies, and mathematical mastery becomes a thrilling feat. Get ready to unleash the magic of drill and practice, as we soar to mathematical greatness, one equation at a time!

Drill and practice teaching method: Navigating through the meaning

The drill and practice teaching method is an instructional approach that focuses on the repetitive practice of specific skills or knowledge. It involves presenting students with targeted exercises, problems, or tasks that require them to repeatedly apply and reinforce what they have learned. This method aims to strengthen and solidify understanding, enhance retention, and promote automaticity in the mastery of concepts.

The purpose of drill and practice is to provide students with ample opportunities to practice and internalize essential skills or knowledge. By engaging in repetitive exercises, students develop fluency, accuracy, and efficiency in applying the learned content. This effectiveness of drill and practice has proven successful in building foundational skills, such as basic math operations, vocabulary acquisition, spelling, grammar rules, and procedural knowledge.

“Unlocking the secrets of math: The power of an effective teaching method”

The drill and practice teaching method finds extensive use in mathematics education due to its ability to reinforce foundational skills and promote mastery of mathematical concepts. The main goal of this method is to help students develop proficiency and fluency with a particular skill or concept. Here are ten ways in which the drill and practice teaching method can help students in math:

1. Improves mastery and fluency:

Repetitive practice can help students develop automaticity and fluency with math skills and concepts, allowing them to apply them more quickly and accurately in real-world situations. When students have to think less about how to perform a math operation and can just do it automatically, they are more likely to make fewer mistakes and solve problems more efficiently.

2. Provides immediate feedback:

With the drill and practice method, students can see their progress as they work through practice problems and quizzes, which can help them identify areas where they need more practice.

3. Allows for individualized instruction:

As students become more proficient and fluent in math skills and concepts, they may feel more confident in their ability to solve problems and tackle new challenges. This can help them approach math with a positive attitude and feel more motivated to engage with the material.

4. Builds confidence:

Drill and practice activities can help students develop a strong understanding of number sense, including basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). Regular practice with number facts and calculations improves fluency and efficiency.

5. Encourages self-directed learning:

Drill and practice exercises are effective for memorizing essential math facts, such as multiplication tables, division facts, and number patterns. Repetition aids in automatic recall, allowing students to solve problems more quickly and accurately.

6. Promotes efficient problem-solving:

Drill and practice can reinforce problem-solving strategies, such as using algorithms, applying formulas, or using logical reasoning. Regular practice helps students become more proficient in selecting appropriate strategies and applying them effectively.

7. Facilitates retention:

Drill and practice activities encourage mental math skills by challenging students to perform calculations mentally and make quick estimations. Regular practice enhances mental agility and computational fluency.

8. Enhances problem-solving skills:

Drill and practice provide students with opportunities to practice mathematical procedures, such as long division, fraction operations, decimal conversions, and geometric formulas. Repetitive practice helps students internalize these procedures and become more proficient in their application.

9. Increases motivation:

By engaging in drill and practice exercises, students can improve their accuracy in mathematical calculations, reducing errors and promoting precision in their work.

10. Can be used in a variety of settings:

Drill and practice activities can reinforce mathematical vocabulary and terminology, ensuring students have a solid understanding of mathematical language and can effectively communicate their ideas.

What does the research state?

Research on drill and practice as a teaching method has generally shown that it can be effective for improving performance on specific skills or concepts. Furthermore, research[1] has shown that drills and practice can be effective ways to teach basic math facts, spelling words, and other skills that require automaticity or quick recall.

However, the effectiveness of drill and practice may depend on the specific learning goals and objectives, as well as the needs and characteristics of the students. In some cases, drill and practice may be less effective for more complex skills or for students who are struggling to learn new material.

Research[2] has also shown that drill methods along with other methods such as concept-based learning, prove effective in enhancing students’ comprehension of concepts and fostering high-level thinking, promoting a deeper understanding of the subject matter, and facilitating critical analysis and synthesis of information. Thus, the drill and practice method is a great method when used with other approaches to learning maths.

Conclusion

The drill and practice teaching method can be helpful for improving math skills because it allows students to repeatedly practice specific math concepts or techniques. This can help students to become more proficient and accurate in their math skills, as they are able to develop muscle memory and automaticity through repetition.

Additionally, the drill and practice method can be useful for reinforcing previously learned material, helping students retain important math concepts over time. At the same time, educators and parents can go through certain examples, that can explain the idea better how to employ this teaching method.

Let’s recall the procedure to learn the alphabet, we started with rote learning, then moved to repeat the alphabet orally, and finally to practice them in a written format. The drill and practice teaching method takes the same route when trying to establish competency in a student.

While the alphabet example is too simplistic to understand the versatile nature of the method, a good starting point would be to note that the Drill and Practice method uses repetition, practice, and autonomy of underlying rules. The final goal of the method is mastery or accuracy over the performance of a task.

The goal of the drill and practice teaching method is simple:

To increase the speed at a given task

To increase the accuracy of the activity or performance

To make the skill an automatic response of the learner

Not only is drill and practice a great pedagogical approach to teaching new material but also a great one to strengthen previously learned material and reinforce it into everyday routine. For young students, the usage of drill and practice can be very simple, however, for students of higher classes and depending on the complexity of the subject, the drill and practice approach needs to be modified. For instance, a student who doesn’t know addition, wouldn’t benefit from drill and practice methods to learn multiplication.

Below a list of real-life classroom examples of drill and practice teaching methods is mentioned, to better understand the application of the procedure.

Examples of drill and practice teaching method

The Drill and Practice teaching method can be used in a variety of classes and with varying age groups. Some of the common examples of the approach have been mentioned below.

Spelling tests are an excellent example of drill and practice teaching methods that can be practiced in the classroom. Depending on the familiarity with the content, teachers can conduct an oral or written spelling test. This can be done as per the drill and practice format, which means assigning the content, asking the students to practice or learn the spelling, and then following it up with an assessment. For the low scorers, retests can be conducted to ensure repetition and subsequent mastery of the content.

2. Choral Practicing

Just as how drill and practice method belongs to the behaviorist tradition, choral practice is based on modeling but employs the drill and practice methodology. Choral practice, in essence, allows students to learn the pronunciation of words after listening to the teacher. After the teacher narrates a section of the material, students will continuously repeat the spoken content until they have achieved mastery over the pronunciation of new words.

3. Using Grammar and Punctuation Workbooks

To learn grammar and punctuation, there is no better method than drill and practice. Learning where to put commas, brackets, question marks, exclamation marks, and other punctuation marks, can only be learned by exposing students to similar types of questions to solve.

For instance, using jumbled sentences, incomplete sentences, using the correct verb, and tense correction, can all be repeated until the student learns the proper use of grammar and punctuation. Assigning similar worksheets to the class of students every alternate day can improve grammar and punctuation through drill and practice.

For students dealing with dyslexia, punctuation can be a tricky thing. Just as similar-looking alphabets confuse them, remembering the meaning of symbols and where to put them can be confusing for the student. Using worksheets as per the structures writing program format, that provide cues or vocabulary as aid, can be used as a drill and practice technique.

4. Foreign Language

Recall how young children learn the language, they continuously repeat words so that they acquire their pronunciation, spelling, and usage in a sentence. When teaching foreign languages, choral practice, spelling tests, and grammar and punctuation are the direct application of drill and practice methods.

In languages like Japanese and Chinese, where the script needs to be learned, the drill and practice method is the only preferred choice. While written drills might be a little hard for dyslexics initially, audiobooks have great benefits as they can serve as important drill administered both individually and under the supervision of teachers.

5. BODMAS Rules

BODMAS stands for the bracket of division, multiplication, addition, and subtraction. It is the basic rule to carry out mathematical operations. As students progress through classes, the complexity of mathematical expressions increases. So, to ensure the accuracy of results, following the BODMAS rule is crucial.

Hence, teachers use the drill and practice methods to make students internalize the format of solving mathematical expressions. In case, a student fails to generate an accurate answer, the same rules can be reiterated and the student can be made to repeat similar expressions until the rule is learned.

6. Creative Classes

Creative classes like drawing, singing, dancing, and dramatics, all employ the use of drill and practice methods. The aim of the drill and practice method is to increase skills and proficiency at a given task, hence, teachers in the creative field emphasize practice and repetition over any other form of teaching.

7. General Knowledge

Another important domain of learning for students is general knowledge. Having knowledge of facts and figures is very important and it is an important component of several competitions at the school and college levels. Students can engage in a self-administered drill and practice method to learn about current events, while teachers can use the same to increase the accuracy of students’ learning of the facts.

Is the drill and practice method a beneficial teaching method?

The Drill and Practice method is amongst the oldest teaching methods and forms a part of the teaching pedagogy for younger classes, skill training, vocational courses, or for achieving mastery over certain concepts. The premise of drill and practice can be somewhere traced to rote learning, which thus makes it less applicable and successful for subjects like arithmetic in higher classes. However, drill and practice remain the best approach when it comes to teaching younger children, learning music, dance or drawing, and even basic or elementary-level mathematics.

In a study[1] by John Woodward, it was found that the drill and practice method, combined with strategies to teach facts, was effective in generating improved performance of students in the application of these facts. Yet another study[2], that measured the cognitive capacity and personal variables of students, found that high-ability students benefitted the most from the drill and practice method. Hence, it can be said that students of young age and students who aim at perfecting their skills will benefit most from the drill and practice method, as opposed to those with a lack of clarity on basic concepts.

Conclusion

The drill and practice method was called outdated procedures very recently. However, more and more educators are coming to realize that the method cannot be simply ruled out from the field of pedagogy. Of course, learning semantics is very important, but drill and practice can be used with children who are just starting their school journey and with those who wish to perfect their skills.

A behaviorist-aligned method called drill and practice involves continually giving the same things to students until they have mastered them. A technique of instruction characterized by methodical repetition of ideas, examples, and practice problems is referred to as drill and practice.

This repetition-based learning of skills and information can be challenging as it can get monotonous for the students. That’s when drill and practice activities come to your rescue. As teachers or educators, you might not want students to be bored of learning a process again and again. Utilizing creative activities encourages learning in a fun manner thereby enabling students to put their concentration and heart into performing the activities.

Check how the below-mentioned activities are a combination of learning, repeating the learned concepts, and increasing knowledge with every activity.

Drill and practice activities to get a stronghold of concepts

Certain concepts require repetition and practice to completely understand and get a hang of them. To avoid the process from getting monotonous, given below are some creative activities that can be employed to create a fun learning environment.

1. Listen and Repeat

The drill and practice method is all about repeating concepts to make students understand the usage of a particular concept or a method. This activity focuses on the usage of verbs and forming sentences to strengthen the grammar learning process.

To conduct this activity, make a list of verbs and write them on chits

Make students sit in a circle

One student picks a chit and reads the verb

Now, that student makes a statement with the inclusion of that particular verb

After this, every other student has to make a new sentence using that verb but make sure the sentence has to be in sync with the first sentence just like forming a story.

After one round gets over, another student picks a chit and the activity goes on

The drill and practice method is effective in teaching different grammatical concepts. This activity fosters learning about sentence building and vocabulary through repetition and being employed with any other grammar topic.

2. Find Someone

Finding someone who does a particular thing can be a creative activity in the classroom setting. This activity focuses on offering opportunities for the repetition of sentences to furnish language skills.

To conduct this activity, use different questions on flashcards

For example, these can be the questions:

Who sleeps before 10 PM?

Who generally eats eggs for breakfast?

Who watches TV in the evening?

Now, make teams of 3 students each

Give them one flashcard with one particular question

After this, they have to go around in the classroom and keep asking questions to different students

They need to find someone who exactly fits the criteria

Make sure these students find at least 5 other students who fit the criteria of the question

As students get an opportunity to keep repeating the question, they are more likely to understand the art of asking questions in the correct manner. It also helps them build communication skills with their classmates.

3. Story Goes this Way!

Storytelling and story writing are important concepts of grammatical skills. This activity focuses on the repetition of the story that enables students to remember more and develop their communication skills as well.

To conduct this activity, take any storybook

Now, start reading one sentence from the story

As you read, ask students to repeat after you

The twist is that you need to modify your voice, pitch, and expressions according to the dialogue in the story

Now, ask students to also modify their pitch and rhythm just like you do

While this is a simple activity, students get an opportunity to understand more about rhythm, pitch, and setting their vocal skills. It also enhances their sentence-building skills because they repeat after you.

4. What’s the Opposite?

Drill and practice can also be better implemented when students are challenged to use creative thinking in the process. This activity focuses on building thinking skills and also implementing the aspect of spontaneity.

To conduct this activity, every student has to stand against another student in a line

Make sure students are facing each other

Now, the first student starts with a sentence using any word given by the teacher

He/she has to form a sentence with that word

The student opposite to him/her has to transform the sentence into an opposite sentence

For example, if the first student says, I like going out during the night, the opposite student has to say – I enjoy playing during the day

Similarly, give every other student different words and ask students to follow the pattern. This way, they’ll keep repeating different antonyms and learn.

This is an interesting activity as students might be confused about the relevant antonyms. It also enables them to use different words in a sentence that might fit the requirement of an antonym.

5. Testing Memory!

Having a strong memory is an important part of the drill and practice method as when a student repeats, he/she learns and remembers the right and wrong things about a concept. Through the usage of flashcards, students get an opportunity to keep seeing the same words and understand the concepts better.

To conduct this activity, use different flashcards and write mathematical tables on them

Make sure there are two flashcards with the same table written on it

Ask students to stand in a circle and play the music

As the music stops, ask them to show their flashcard to everyone in the class and hide it within 5 seconds

After this, play the music again and as it stops, ask students to find their pairs

The activity keeps going unless everyone has found their pair

Such an activity can be a unique way to make students learn tables as they keep asking to find their pair. Multiplication facts can also be practiced and learned with the help of dice games. Also, you can use different words, signs, or symbols on flashcards to impart knowledge on the subject matter.

6. Read and Turn Pages

Drill and practice also include remembering texts and thoroughly reading them. This activity focuses on reading skills and tests the reading skills in an interesting manner.

To conduct this activity, take any book/passage and ask the student to start reading the text

As the students start reading, he/she might make some mistakes, helping them with correct pronunciation, pauses, and tone.

Now, keep practicing the same passage as many times the student is not able to fluently read without any mistakes.

Once the student has mastered that passage, introduce a new one with one step difficult from the previous passage.

Similarly, keep changing books while the reading process goes on

As students keep reading different texts, they develop reading as well as vocabulary skills. Such an activity helps them understand the importance of adapting to different forms of reading and not just reading any text without understanding it.

7. The Classroom Market

A classroom that gets converted into real-life scenarios can indeed foster a fun learning environment. This activity focuses on asking a lot of questions and coming to a conclusion.

To conduct this activity, every student has to become a grocer selling different vegetables

Give a shopping list to students and artificial money to buy vegetables

The shopping list must include names of different vegetables and the quantity required

The student is supposed to go to all grocers and find the right groceries by asking questions about the availability, quantity, and prices

After the student is done with the list, he/she has to calculate the total number of vegetables, money spent and money saved and submit it to you

Students have to ask many questions from so many different grocers thereby implementing the aspect of the drill here. Also, as they calculate the total, they are more likely to entirely repeat their purchase with prices and quantity. The such activity enables them to be quick at mathematical operations as well.

How can the method be beneficial for students with dyslexia and dyscalculia?

Students with dyslexia often face problems with language learning. It is also observed that these students might lack the necessary language skills even after instruction. Hence, the drill and practice approach is important to make students read in a fluent manner. An important research[1] point is the inclusion of drill and repetition methods to strengthen vocabulary and language skills.

The drill and practice method focuses on the repetition of concepts in the areas of different subjects. Teachers and educators can be innovative with their approaches when dealing with students with Dyscalculia. Dyscalculic students often struggle with simple mathematical operations. In such cases, drills can help improve their understanding as they get an opportunity to go back to the concept multiple times. Whether it is learning multiplication or understanding addition, constant repetition leads to higher retention of the learned concepts.

Here, it can be concluded that students with learning difficulties need more time and are often slow compared to other students. To offer them the right education, drill and practice methods are highly helpful. Teachers and parents can constantly use different activities to improve the student’s memory, concentration, and patience-building skills.

Conclusion

Drilling is a crucial part of learning environments as students can better remember concepts when presented repeatedly. It also enhances learning through the usage of different activities where students do not realize that they are simply repeating. The above-mentioned activities help educators and teachers create a transformational environment that caters to language development, vocabulary skills, and mathematical concepts. Drill and practice activities can be modified depending on the subject and required area of improvement creating a fun learning environment in the classroom thereby encouraging participation and enthusiasm in the class.

What do you feel is the motive behind regularly going to school, attending classes, learning different subjects, doing projects and assignments, and so on?

Is it just to pass exams and have a high school diploma or a degree?

If you answered no, then you probably believe that the motive behind education is to understand what is being taught, learn it, and then apply it in real life. That is also the goal of the drill and practice method of teaching, which emphasizes the need to actually understand the application of a concept and retain it in order to consider the lesson a success.

In this blog, we’ll have a closer look at the drill and practice method of teaching and learning and how it can prove to be a useful educational intervention for individuals with learning differences like dyslexia.

Decoding drill and practice method

Built on principles of the behaviorist school of thought, the drill and practice learning method represents a technique of teaching and learning that helps in attaining mastery over a certain skill or activity.

It is based on the premise that in order to apply a concept in real life, an individual needs to completely understand and retain it. The way to achieve that, according to this method, is by regularly practicing the concept until the required goals are achieved.

The drill and practice method usually follows a three-step progression where the students are first introduced to the concept. In this step, the teacher takes the predominant role in learning, explaining every single thing in detail and ensuring that every student understands it.

In the second step, the responsibility of learning falls onto the students who now practice the concept or skill they were taught in class during the first step.

The third step involves assessments meant to test how much the student has been able to understand, retain, and apply. If they are able to solve most of the questions, they are moved to the next level of difficulty, and if not, they continue practicing tasks and questions until they can.

Effectiveness of drill and practice method for learning differences

Individuals with dyslexia, a developmental learning difference characterized by language-related issues, can stand to benefit from having the drill and practice method as a part of their curriculum. The reasons for this include the following:

1. The difficulty is increased progressively

In the drill and practice method, students are not expected to solve advanced questions based on preliminary information delivered during the lectures. The difficulty of the questions is increased slowly and based on their progress. This can be helpful for students with dyslexia because, for example, while learning to spell, they might require some extra time and practice with the basic spellings like cat and bat before they can spell words like kitten and cricket.

2. Performance is monitored, and continuous feedback is provided

Drill and practice-based methods of instruction emphasize the need to constantly monitor and assess the individual’s performance. This helps in giving immediate and updated feedback that keeps the students motivated. These assessments are used to further adjust the difficulty level of the questions they are practicing.

For example, if a student with dyslexia who struggles with spelling seems to have mastered spelling 3 letter words following the consonant-vowel-consonant pattern like cat and bat, their good performance should be acknowledged, and they should start working on spelling 4 letter words next.

3. Increases proficiency as well as confidence

The end goal of the drill and practice method is to encourage the students to keep practicing until they master a particular task or skill. Individuals with dyslexia might have trouble with getting certain concepts in one go, unlike their peers who do not have any such challenges or struggles.

This mode of teaching allows them to practice as long as they need to, to become proficient in that concept. Having a safe space to make mistakes and slowly seeing their efforts pay off through an increase in their level of performance also aids in building and enhancing the self-esteem and confidence of students.

Effective or Excessive: What does the research say?

A 2016 study published the results of a 2-year long special instruction program for dyslexia. The program included phonetic instruction and training, drill and practice training, and employed multisensory methods to teach reading skills in a holistic manner that helps the students overcome the concerns presented by dyslexia. The findings showed that the group of students who participated in the program showed significantly better comprehension and reading recognition skills[1].

Another study, conducted in 2017, sought to gauge the benefits of engaging in learning through video games that follow the drill and practice method of instruction. It found that along with enhanced educational benefits, students with dyslexia also derived several social benefits from this gameplay. They would spontaneously engage in conversations and discussions regarding the game, its progress, its components, its contents, etc., with their peers and their teachers[2].

Another study reported the results of a drill and practice-based learning program for teaching reading to deaf students with dyslexia. This 2007 study included 2 students who, over a 6 month period, were provided with special training that included constantly repeating and practicing what they had learned with a positive teacher-learner relationship. The results showed an improvement in their reading abilities as well as their overall attitude toward learning and literacy. An increase in the students’ self-confidence, as well as social interactions, was also observed[3].

Conclusion

The drill and practice method is exactly as it sounds. It presents a model of teaching where students keep practicing the same concept over and over until they become proficient in it. Using this method in the classroom usually follows a three-step progression wherein the students are first introduced to the topic by the teacher. Next, they practice the topic on their own and are then tested on it. If they perform well on the test, the level of difficulty of the questions they are practicing is increased, and if not, they are given more questions with the same level of difficulty to practice on their own.

This technique has several benefits for individuals with dyslexia who might need extra time and practice to master a concept. With its unique features like progressive increase in difficulty and continuous assessments and feedback, which can be crucial in education. Furthermore, the drill and practice method not only helps in increasing the proficiency of students with dyslexia but also has positive repercussions for their self-esteem and confidence.
