A bag or two of small marshmallows and toothpicks

Instructions:

• Provide individual students with marshmallows in a bowl and a handful of toothpicks.

• Kids can make 2D shapes like squares, triangles, rectangles, etc. 
• Use prompt cards to tell kids which shape they must work on and how many toothpicks and marshmallows they will need to make a particular shape. 
• When done, let kids display their work on a table for others to see and appreciate!

3. Ice Cream in a Bag

Who doesn’t love ice cream? This fun STEM experiment allows kids to make ice cream right in the classroom. This activity revolves around the fact that when salt is added to ice, the temperature of the mixture is far lower than ice alone. So, when you use salt and ice to cool your ice cream mixture, you get better quality ice cream than when using only ice. 

Things You’ll Need: 

Half and half, sugar, vanilla extract, salt, ice, measuring spoons, 2 small and 2 large Ziplock bags, 2 towels

Instructions:

• Take two small Ziplock bags and fill each with ½ cup half and half, 1 tbsp. sugar, ¼ tsp. vanilla extract. You can call students individually to measure the quantities and fill the ingredients in the bag. Seal the bags and shake them well. 
• Now take two large Ziplock bags and add 3-4 cups of ice in each. Add ½ cup salt in one bag and mark it as “ice + salt.”
• Place one small Ziplock bag filled with ice cream mixture in each large bag.
• Divide your class into two groups. Cover the ice bags with a towel and hand them to students so they can shake them for a good 5 minutes. 
• You may set the timer to know when it’s time to stop.
• After 5 minutes, let the kids touch the bags and decide which bag seems cooler. The ice + salt bag will be cooler. 
• Take out the ice cream bags and feel the texture. The ice cream placed in a salt + ice bag will be better frozen because its temperature is well below freezing.

4. Secret Messages

In this activity, kids learn how simple household items can be used to write and reveal secret messages on paper. This simple activity is very engaging as kids experience that sending secret messages is possible and is not just something that happens only in fairytales. 

Things You’ll Need: 

Baking soda, rubbing alcohol, turmeric powder, water, Q-tips, paper, and bowls

Instructions:

• Call two volunteers from your class. Let one of them make a solution of 1 tbsp. baking soda and 1 tbsp. water in one bowl. The other can use 1⁄2 tsp. turmeric powder and 3 tbsp. rubbing alcohol to make a mixture in another bowl. 
• In the first round, kids can bring their papers and write secret messages using the baking soda and water mixture. 
• Allow the sheets to air dry for an hour or so.
• Now kids can exchange their sheets, dip a paintbrush in the turmeric-rubbing alcohol solution and rub it all over the paper. The secret message will be revealed!
• Take this opportunity to explain to kids that turmeric acquires a deep red color when it comes in contact with alkaline baking soda and hence, can reveal the message. 

5. Capillary Action 

This is one of the classic STEM activities that every kindergartener must try out. This experiment is based on the principles of capillary action. How water transfers from one container to the other through capillary action is what kids will get to observe. 

Things You’ll Need: 

6 Clear disposable glasses, tissue papers, food coloring, and water

Instructions:

• On a table, place six clear disposable glasses in a row. Select a place where there is no commotion, as the glasses will be there overnight.
• Half-fill alternate glasses with water and add some drops of food coloring to each glass with water. Use different colors for easy differentiation. Ask your students to help you in this step. 
• Roll a tissue paper and place it between glasses in a way that one end is immersed in the colored water and the other end is positioned in the empty glass. You will have to use a total of three tissues for six glasses. 
• Ask kids to observe how water wets the tissue paper and moves upward due to capillary action. 
• Leave the setup as it is. Make observations after 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, and the next day. 
• Kids will see how colored water travels through the tissue paper and fills the empty glasses. Enjoy the amazement on your students’ faces!

6. STEM with Legos

Legos are kids’ all-time favorites! They love using their imagination and building things with those tiny colorful blocks. So, why not add them to your curriculum for some classroom fun? Using Legos, you can challenge your little engineers to build structures that stand apart and encourage them to use their skills to make something unique. 

Things You’ll Need: 

Lots and lots of Legos

Instructions:

• For this activity, you may either choose to provide Legos or have kids bring their own so everyone has a good number of blocks to work with.
• Now write on the board or say out loud what structure the kids should make.
• You can use prompts like – make a model of your house, a bridge, a supermarket, etc.
• Once everyone is done, you may ask them to display and explain their work to the rest of the class.

7. Sink or Float Experiment

Sink or float is another STEM activity for kindergarteners. It is a great way to introduce kids to the concepts of sink and float. Through this activity, kids can see how some things sink in water while others float, irrespective of their shape and size. You can explain that even if some objects are big, it does not necessarily mean they will sink in water. 

Things You’ll Need: 

A large bowl of water, 8-10 small objects (leaf, pebble, eraser, pencil, coin, etc.)

Instructions:

• Gather a large water bowl and a few small household objects to drop in the water.
• Do it yourself or ask a volunteer to drop one object in the water bowl.
• Before dropping, ask kids what they think. Will the object float or sink in the bowl? 
• Now let the kid drop the object into the water. Ask students to observe the result. 
• Repeat the experiment with other objects and discuss why things sink or float in water. 

8. Popsicle Stick Patterns

Give your students an opportunity to practice patterns through this fun, challenging STEM activity. It reinforces color recognition and helps in building pattern recognition as well. You can make as many patterns as you want so your students get ample practice in one session. 

Things You’ll Need: 

Popsicle sticks in different colors

Instructions:

• Set up a station in your class for this wonderful STEM activity.
• Use popsicle sticks to create different patterns (such as red, green, red,…), starting from easy patterns and gradually increasing the difficulty level. 
• Place the patterns, one below the other, and call one student at a time to continue the pattern. 
• Check how many of them did the student get right. You may even note the score in a notebook. 
• Remove the pattern created by the first student so the next one can give it a try.
• The activity is complete when all students have participated in it. Declare the names of the students who got them all correct and reward them if you would like.

• Make sure they get Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange, and Red
• Tell them about Vibgyor and assist them in thumb painting
• Here, students need to take the color on the thumb and the entire rainbow with thumbprints

6. Strain it Right

Imagine an activity, which helps kids with both, colors, and motor skills! Out of so many elements, this activity focuses on picking the right color in a fast-timed situation. You will need a lot of stationery items and a huge box.

• To conduct this activity, make sure you have many stationery items and other objects in different colors yellow, green, orange, blue, and red
• Put all these elements in a box
• After this, give a pasta strainer or a small-sized strainer to the student 
• Assign them color and they need to use the strainer to pick the elements of the color assigned to them
• Keep another empty box beside and let students pick as many items as they can in a span of 1 minute 

This activity is directed at being quick in picking the right colors. It improves hand-eye coordination and also enhances motor skills in little learners. Hence, this activity can also be used as an eye-hand coordination activity, especially for kids who have a learning difficulty which can be one of the reasons that affect motor skills.

• To conduct this activity, stick a huge color wheel on the board
• Now, give them different sketches including trees, balls, mountains, different vegetables, or any other blank picture 
• Now, students need to observe and point to the color that matches the picture 
• For example, if it is a tree, they need to point out the green color in the color wheel

Matching is quite ordinary in the everyday life of a student. But, this game changes the learning experience as it triggers the brain to identify the right colors and put them in their correct boxes. It is visually attractive and also acts as a brain teaser in different shades of colors.

To play this game, students need to click on the start button, and the game begins. The game begins with many elements mixed in a closed format on the top. It includes various images of animals, elements of nature, and other colorful objects. The game has 5 different boxes below – Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, and Blue. Students need to match the right image with that of the box. For example, if the image is of a blue bird, the bird needs to be dragged in the blue box.

While students learn to match elements with colors, they also get an opportunity to understand a thin line between the colors orange and red. Such a matching game increases focus and helps with color recognition.

As the game begins, a number is displayed on the screen. There are 3 different options given on the right side. These options are jumbled, creating a bit of a challenge to match with the bigger number. For example, if the number 1 is displayed, students need to select the number 1 from the options to match them correctly. 

While the game offers matching numbers, it increases focus and builds concentration in younglings. The numbers are easy. However, due to the difference in their sizes and 3 options, students get a chance to think critically and quickly think of an answer.

4. Match the Letters

Learning alphabets is fun, but matching alphabets sure happens to be a game changer in learning. This online game focuses on small and big letter alphabets in a subtle manner. 

As the game begins, students are shown different tiles of bigger letter alphabets. Small letter alphabet tiles are displayed on the bottom part. Students now need to match similar alphabets by dragging. Here, they need to drag the alphabet k to the big letter alphabet K. After the first set is done, another different set is presented for matching.

At times, students might get confused between two different letter alphabets. In such cases, this game offers to match the right pairs and at the same time, learn about the alphabet too.

5. Number Matching Game 

Numbers are fundamentals of math, and this online game is a combination of numbers and matching them. The online game focuses on increasing concentration and counting skills. 

As the game begins, students are presented with different tiles. The tiles are placed in a way that represents small balls in the first tile and a digit in the second tile, and the pattern goes for the entire placement of tiles. Here, students first need to count the balls in the tile and tap on them. Next, they need to tap on the tile, which represents the digit of the balls. If there are seven balls, they need to click on the seven balls and then on the tile showing the number 7.

With the usage of such an online game, students not only match the numbers correctly, but they also get an opportunity to count and increase analytical thinking skills. The easy user interface is an added advantage for little learners.

6. Word Matching Game

Vocabulary is an essential part of everyday learning, and through word-matching games, it becomes easy to improve this skill. The game offers a combination of images and words, making it interesting for kids.

As the game begins, different pictures are shown on the top of the game. Different words are written below in a vertical format, along with blank tiles beside them. Here, students need to check the images and drag them toward the matching words. For example, if the word is red, then students need to drag the image of a red crayon toward the blank tile next to the word.

The quiz format of the game then offers a submit button where students can view the number of correct and incorrect answers. They also get to see scores thereby creating a competitive learning environment. Such a game allows visual skills and enhances imagination.

7. Match Cards

Matching different pictures with words indeed helps students recognize their relations. At times, young learners might know the image but not know the correct word for it. This matching game focuses on strengthening vocabulary.

As the game begins, students select any level which they want to play. Click on the play button to start the game. The game starts with a word and 3 options are given below the word. Students need to drag the right image toward the word for a correct match. For example, if the word is hat, they need to drag the image of a hat toward the word. 

The game also reads out the word thereby strengthening listening skills in students. Also, the game calculates scores so students can evaluate their mistakes.

8. Shape Matching Game 

While students learn to match words and numbers, learning about shapes is also a significant part of learning. This online game focuses on matching shapes with their respective shadows.

To play this game, students need to click on the start button where they shall have 3 options to choose from. They can choose to match geometric shapes or animals. The third option is matching the image in a puzzle format. With 3 such options, students can also select the number of geometric shapes they want to match. For example, if they select 7, 7 different shapes will be shown on the screen with their shadows. Simply by analyzing shadows, they need to drag the shape toward the shadow.

Since this online game provides 3 different games, it offers a diversified learning experience to students. They also develop imagination and visual-spatial skills as they recognize shapes, animals, and even puzzles.

9. Color Matching – Match By Name

Colors are part and parcel of learning as students generally interact with various colors throughout their academic journey. This online game helps little learners identify and match colors either by recognizing or listening.

As the name begins, students are given two options wherein they can either match colors with a name or match colors by a specific color. In the first part, the name of the color is displayed on the screen and 4 different colors are displayed below. For example, if the color name is green, they need to select a square filled with the green color.

In the second part, color is displayed on the top and 4 different colors are displayed below. Here, they need to identify the same color and click on that to form the match. Such an online game increases creativity and strengthens the color recognition ability of little learners.

Recognizing words and images seems an easy task, however, little learners might also need some boost in understanding the concept. Through this matching game, kids get an opportunity to understand words and match them correctly with the images.

As the game begins, students are shown different images on the right and three-word options on the left. For example, if the image is of a pencil, they need to select the right option from the given words. The game does not proceed if they do not match the correct word with the image. 

Little learners are more likely to understand and connect with words when imagery is given in front of the screen. The game creates relatability with words through an easy interface.
