Communication is the key to translating your ideas into a string of words that flows from your mind to others. Do you know the main ingredient behind persuasion and influence? It is the art of communication. Therefore a significant chunk of our lives has been spent in “reading and writing” in our schools to develop a strong foundation. Your kid needs to have a strong understanding of the spoken language before they can correlate it with the written language.

Phonics helps kids to associate the sounds with the appropriate spellings. It bridges the gap between listening, reading, and writing. With the onset of digitalization, these lessons can be converted into a set of interesting phonic games. This has helped several kids around the world to learn at their own pace and track their performance. Let us explore some of the best phonic games that you can have your hands on.

Top 9 online phonics games worth trying

1. Find The Phonic Sound

‘Find the Phonic Sound’ is perfect to begin with the list. You might be wondering why so. Well, the reason is it helps in understanding the sound recognition of the smallest writing unit called graphemes. The game consists of different levels, which get more challenging as your kid progresses. It starts by asking, “Can you find the “ch” sound?” where a jumbled list of graphemes is given, and you have to choose the one that is asked.

Game Link: Playstore | Appstore

2. ABC Spelling

Once your kid gets familiar with the “sound” of the language and written word formations, it becomes easier for him to recall hearing the same sound again. It will help your kid understand word comprehension while enriching his/ her spelling dictionary.

The game starts with a picture (for instance, a cat). A set of jumbled letters are given beneath the image. Your kid needs to select the letters that form the correct spelling of the word matching the picture.

Game Link: Playstore | Appstore

3. Deep Sea Phonics

It’s an enhanced gamified version of Spell and Phonics. In this game, the main character Molly asks for your kid’s help in spelling out the sounds for the words mentioned. Your kid has to listen carefully to the story and then choose the correct phonetic sound mentioned in the set of options. If the answer is correct, Molly gets the object from the treasure box.

With this, kids can regularly practice spelling and learn new words while playing a mere game. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that Deep Sea Phonics is a reliable literacy game for kids who experience difficulty with spelling.

Game Link: Playstore | Appstore

4. Pirate Phonics Games

This game helps to boost your phonic knowledge and vocabulary. First, you need to choose the sounds from the list based on which words will be presented later in the game. As the game begins, the pirate throws a coin revealing a story.

If the name is real and meaningful, then you have to press the tick button or else across. For each correct answer, you gather the coins that fill up your treasure box of vocabulary. It is an entertaining loving game for kids in learning phonics.

Game Link: Playstore

5. Interactive Phonics Bingo

As the name goes, this game is interactive and requires a group of kids to play it. You would also need letter-printed bingo cards, which can be downloaded in PDF format from the site.

There are different sets of letters and sounds from which you have to select the one you wish to learn. Once the group is assigned, the list of 30 words appears one by one. The winner is the one who crosses as many representations as possible concerning other kids in the group.

Game Link: Playstore | AppStore | Web App

6. Phonics Hangman

In Phonics Hangman, you are shown a picture beneath which a few letters are missing, which you need to fill from the jumbled list. It helps in understanding the graphemes. If you correctly answer the missing sound, then phonetics will revise how the word sounds and looks.

It gives a platform for kids to practice grapheme recognition. The game allows kids to choose what sound they are willing to practice. This game is a good option for parents who believe in fun learning for their toddlers.

Game Link: Playstore | Web App

7. Blending Sounds Spelling

The game starts with a kid traveling in a van and stopping every time the bridge is broken. To build a bridge, you need to adjust the letter blocks according to the word dictated.

If you follow the instructions correctly, you win the round, you have to build many bridges successfully and travel as far as possible. This game is an excellent starter activity for a kid to begin his or her journey of developing strong communication skills.

Game Link: Appstore | Web App

8. Make A Phonics Word

Another version of dictation in a more gamified way; this game helps your kid understand the segmentation and blending of comments concerning letters and sounds. A word is given, and your kid has to match the sound correctly to win the game.

This game gets progressively harder after every stage in order to teach a range of skills to your kid. It encourages the toddler to practice letters and sounds regularly and helps in learning word comprehension, pseudowords, and image and letter recognition.

Game Link: Playstore | Appstore | Web App

9. Long and Short Vowel Sort

Once your kid has developed a basic vocabulary, then this is a suitable option to put the skill to the test. In this game, two buckets are given along with pictures of objects or animals whose spelling consists of vowels.

The player needs to sort the image into a short vowel bucket and a long vowel bucket. For instance, a quick vowel bucket can have a cat, bag, gum, etc., whereas a long vowel bucket can have pictures of the cycle, an umbrella, etc. To sort it successfully, you need a good understanding of what the image is called and how many vowels it consists of.

Game Link: Web App

Conclusion

To make your kid an avid reader, it is essential first to develop their phonemic awareness. It takes a lot of sequential practice starting with the necessary level and moving towards advance. With such a fantastic series of games produced story-wise for our little learners, why keep waiting? Just choose the right match on the web and get set.

A child is admitted to a preschool or is home trained to learn to read and write. This ‘learning to read’ is called attaining phonemic awareness. It has five distinct levels that coincide with the milestones of a progressive learning curve. This means the student has to be conversant with the phoneme, the smallest unit of the sound of a letter, at the start. And then, the student learns to blend, rhyme, and identify them apart too. Let’s go through crucial levels of phonemic awareness that play an important role in building reading skills.

5 Important levels of phonemic awareness

If we break down a word into letters, we will realize that every letter corresponds to a starting sound, a middle sound, and an ending sound. All these sounds are called phonemes. The ability to manipulate these sounds and employ them to sound out words correctly is nothing but phonemic awareness. So, this awareness is achieved when a learner absorbs the following levels of phonemic cognition (Adams, 1990):

1. Phoneme segmentation

The phenome segmentation can include the segmentation of syllables. It further progresses to the segmentation of a word and then to that of a sentence. It involves literally counting and sounding out the phonemes separately to understand a word’s sound. Since phonemic awareness is the ability to recognize the sounds of parts of the word/letter/sentence, it means differently while moving from word to sentence segmentation. For example,

When trying to grasp syllable segmentation, a learner is actually internalizing how the letter sounds differently. Knowing which parts of the mouth are being used to sound a particular letter helps attain pronunciation proficiency. Also, it improves word recognition[1] and helps bring improved reading comprehension.

On moving to word segmentation[2], cognition is focused on the starting, middle, and ending sounds that compose the word. It extracts some parts of phonological learning that teach rhyming and alliteration.

Finally, when the sentence segmentation is learned, each word’s sound is worked out to help correct pronunciation and prosody while reading.

2. Phoneme blending and splitting

It refers to the blending and splitting of phonemes to create new words. Once the student learns the sound of each phoneme, the correct blending is required to read the word correctly.

So, the concept of onset-riming, which means sounding out the beginning (onset) and end (riming), is learned by splitting and blending the phonemes mentally. When teachers ask to speak and write, they are given the pretext to learn spellings using phoneme splitting and blending.

3. Phoneme Rhyming and Alliteration

Phoneme rhyming and alliteration involve words that represent a common sound. Rhyming focuses on the commonality of ending sounds, while alliteration focuses on learning words that start with the same sound. When the teacher asks a child to write rhyming words, the answers are mostly those words that have the same letters in rhyming. This means, learning ‘pack’, ‘back’, and ‘lack’ are examples of rhyming.

Alliteration practice involves learning tongue twisters. ‘She sells seashells on the seashore’, and other such phrases give an idea of alliteration. It acquaints a child with various repetitions of the same sound.

4. Phoneme Comparing and Contrasting

Words change when contrasting phonemes are used to make the word sound. Means, f, and v are the contrasting phonemes because these are sounded out by applying phonetic differences. And, using these sounds replaceable changes the meaning of the word entirely. Fan and Van may be rhyming, but phonetic difference leading to different meanings of words puts them in contrasting phoneme categories. (Essentials of Linguistics, e-book, Chapter 4: Speech Sounds in Mind)

Similarly, phonemic comparison can help know if the phonemes sounding similar are different/unique or are allophones of the same phoneme. While allophones are sounds, the phonemes are a set of those sounds. The comparison is helpful in understanding how a particular phoneme of the English language can be used to speak two different words having different sounds. For example, a Spanish person speaking dough and though will not use different phonemes, but allophones of the same phoneme.

5. Phoneme manipulation

The ability to move or alter individual phonemes while retaining in mind their specific roles in constituting a word’s sound is described as phonemic manipulation. Several activities happen behind a simple act of reading. Learners cognitively delete, add, substitute, or rearrange sounds to arrive at the correct way of voicing the word. This process is required to be fluent in reading connected text.

What phoneme manipulation leads to?

Phoneme manipulation helps in building an advanced understanding of phonemic awareness. Through the processes of adding, deleting, and arranging, the learners can find ways to create new words. For example, removing ‘b’ from ‘blast’ can give ‘last’ (phoneme subtracting), and replacing ‘p’ in ‘plastic with ‘e’ can help generate the word ‘elastic’. The early readers can understand how these simple processes can lead to ease of populating the list of words they know. So, apart from building reading ease, phoneme manipulation helps to develop vocabulary.

To conclude,

Building phonemic awareness means learning to read (from Book Overcoming Dyslexia, Schaywitz, 2003). It is the total of recognizing and blending phonemes to build words, further developing reading skills. The presence of this awareness in reading beginners is one of the parameters to assess learning difficulties in children if any.

A few life skills are always lucratively required for leading a good life in the present competitive world. Phonemic awareness is one of such greatest requirements for all and especially for people with learning difficulties. Just like Phonemic apps, these are useful for carving a better future that can help cope with others. But, it’s easy to acquire them with simple yet highly effective activities. Here are such top ten activities for phonemic awareness.

List of 10 best phonemic awareness activities

1. Segmenting and Blending

An awe-inspiring activity for enhanced phonemic awareness is the segmenting and blending activity. The activity aims at splitting/segmenting, recognizing, and blending a wide range of sounds. Blending and segmentation of the sounds, specifically in three-sound words, are for the best interest of kindergarten students with less phonemic awareness.

The major tool used in the activity is the vibrant Elkonin (sound boxes). These boxes make the understanding process easier and fun-filled, and the children practice segmenting, even without actually knowing it. Some favorite soundbox kits of children are Carrot Sound Boxes, Snowflake Mat, Spider Web Segmenting, and much more. For blending, the learner runs a car/truck on the road as the individual blends the sounds one after the other.

2. Tapping Syllables

Tapping syllables activity takes this as its very mission, and it is a very practical resource for teaching the breakage of words into syllables. Children tap with a single finger on both hands to recognize the number of syllables in a word. Different properties such as hand clappers, tennis rackets, or drums can be used to make the learning livelier.

The child finds the number of syllables found in a given word, say a drum is tapped twice for the term “sister” as it has two syllables. For enhancing the difficulty levels and interest in the game, the drum can be tapped a specific number of times. Then, the child can guess the word, which would have the same specified number of syllables.

3. Clapping a pattern

Phonemic awareness can be improved by inculcating necessary skills like breaking words into segments, sounds, and syllables and understanding the deepest things than learning on the surface. Clapping a pattern activity actually does that by aiding in easier recognition of a pattern, which is the very basic step in listening to the separate parts of a word and also the individual sounds. A caretaker or instructor can make a clapping pattern, and the learner would repeat it. Then, the learner should be asked to do a pattern, and the instructor would repeat it. It will make the learner think if the instructor has rightly received their pattern right or not.

4. Count the Words in a Sentence

Phonemic awareness, an important subset of vital phonological awareness, requires the listeners to listen, recognize as well as manipulate and have a hold over the phonemes, the tiniest mental units of sound. The major dimensions of phonemic awareness include the syllables, rhymes, and initial sounds, which the learner should manipulate for beginning to read.

‘Count the words in a Sentence’ is a great activity that helps in the recognition and manipulation of rhymes and words, units comprising phenomes. The game involves the usage of nursery rhymes, and the number of words in a phrase is counted. For example, the phrase, ‘Jill came tumbling after’ constitutes four words.

5. Phoneme Manipulation

The phenome manipulation is an excellent activity to indulge the learners in their way to reach maximum phonemic awareness potential, as it helps in great manipulation of phenomes, as the title suggests. The activity basically involves syllable deletion from one portion of a word to see what the results look like. For example, the activity involves questions like what word would be left if the sound “p” is taken away in the word “pie.”

It includes the identification and manipulation of syllables and increasing the frequency with which they are seen and used. Words like pie, chart, take cape, etc., with hidden words found in them, can make the game at its best. The first sound, the last sound, and then the middle sound can also be deleted and played.

6. Listening

One of the greatest skills that most people lack is listening skills. It’s important for all and highly important for anyone who needs to increase their phonemic awareness. A great activity that can be interesting for early learners/ children for reflecting on their phonemic awareness is by listening. That means giving attention to even the smallest of noises and recognizing and learning from them.

It emphasizes becoming sound spotters, rendering ears to everything rather than using eyes. A teacher/ caretaker can initiate this and ask the learner or group of learners to crave sounds. The key phrase, of who can find it can trigger more enthusiasm and by that more listening and more learning.

7. Nonsense

The basic aim of the game is to increase phonemics awareness by developing the learner’s ability to differentiate between what he/she expects to hear from an audio source and what he/she actually hears. A familiar story or poem would be read or recited aloud to the learner but, frequently by the words or changed or reversed, changing its real sense to nonsense.

The learner has to detect all the changes whenever and wherever they occur. They can also explain the thing which went wrong. Giving attention to these subtle differences, their phonemic awareness steadily increases as they recognize the phonology, syntax, words, as well as semantics of the language. Switching unpredictably adds to the interest of the game.

8. Objects and syllables

Since phonemic awareness generally aims at an auditory process against a visual process (where no actual words are seen), an object can physically act as a great tool. There are a plethora of tools for accomplishing complete a more tactile and engaging phonemic awareness activity. The little bottlebrush trees and pom poms are great examples of such tools.

A word would be stated by the instructor or caretaker, and the learner would enunciate all the syllables in the word. But the interesting rule is that they won’t say it, but rather they would touch/ push/lift the objects that pertain to those sounds. A joyous game for continuous and comprehensive learning!

9. Finding things: Initial phonemes

‘Finding things: Initial phenomes’ aims at extending a learner’s awareness of the earlier/ first phonemes by making the learners so comparing and contrast work. It would eventually make the learners recognize the first few sounds in a wide range of words.

The picture cards with few pictures on them would be spread out. The learner/ group of learners has to identify the pictures whose names would start with the same initial that they work/ discuss presently. If one picture is found, the learner would say the picture’s name and its initial phoneme( like f-f-f-f-ish, /f-f-f-f/ fish). Many variations are found in this game and can modify according to one’s creativity and comfort.

10. Rhyming words

The ability to manipulate and fiddle with words, especially rhyming words, is one of the finer and refining points of phonemic awareness. Being able to have the precision to distinguish between individual segments of a word and understanding how different words are linked by the same phenomes is the ultimate benefit of this activity. The teacher/ caretaker would take the lead of the game by asking questions like which word would share the same phenomes. The words like cat, bat, and hat, can be proposed as examples, and the rest can be asked by the learner. Difficulty levels and interest in the activity can be boosted by giving unfamiliar words.

Games and activities for building phonemic awareness offer doable ways to put concepts into action. Instead of simply mugging up the basics, learners acquire phonemic awareness by doing something that yields them measurable results too. Thus, they are more convinced of the knowledge gained; assurance replaces assumption!

These promote teacher/student engagement in class

Help build and reinforce phonemic awareness sustainably and in a measurable manner

Suitable for learners of English as Second Language as well

Build a strong scaffold for spelling and vocabulary skills

Conclusion

Phonemic awareness activities can be done in classrooms, and as a part of the homeschooling curriculum too. These are applied in the learning curriculum after researching their impact on the learning pace. Designed to melt away the hesitation surrounding the learning of a new language, adult language learners can also find a doable way of building their English reading and writing skills. The only thing to ensure is that learners understand the demonstration and that teachers are amply trained for successful implementation.
