2. Speed: 

Fluent reading also involves reading at an efficient speed. Let’s say a child reads each word accurately but takes a lot of time reading it out. We won’t call this fluency because there is a lack of speed in reading. For reading to sound fluent, it has to be close to the speed of spoken language.

3. Prosody: 

The last component of reading fluency is prosody. It is the ability to read with expression and not sound like a robot. It includes using the right emotion while reading aloud to match what’s written, emphasizing important words or those written in bold or italics, and taking the right length of pauses in places with a comma or period.

Reading fluency is the right mix of all the above components. Having mastery over just one or two elements is not sufficient to gain fluency. One must be proficient in all three areas to be called a fluent reader.

What are the observable signs of reading fluency difficulties?

A child who is yet to develop reading fluency displays their inability to read and comprehend effectively by saying things like, “This is so hard” or “I don’t like reading.” They are not so inclined to pick up a book and read by themselves, and their frustration is clearly evident whenever they are asked to read. Here are a few signs that can help parents and teachers know that a child needs explicit instruction to improve reading fluency:

• Doesn’t seem interested in reading.
• Reading with no expression.
• Not reading in chunks or phrases.
• Not pausing at the right places when reading a sentence.

A fluency checklist is a valuable tool to help students self-assess their reading fluency. When kids read, they are more engaged in identifying and sounding out words. But with a checklist at hand, they get a visual reminder to pay attention to other aspects that can help them read fluently. So, what points should a reading fluency checklist comprise? Let’s take a look.

I. Reading Fluency Checklist for Emerging Readers

Accuracy:

• I read all the words correctly.
• I do not miss reading words or word endings.
• I do not add extra words while reading.
• I correct myself if I make a mistake while reading.

Speed:

• I read at a steady and easy-to-understand speed.
• My reading sounds like I am having a conversation with my friends.

Expression:

• I do not sound like a robot when I am reading.

3. Hand over a reading passage to your students. Make sure the text matches the reading competency of your students.
4. Now, read the text to the class to demonstrate how their reading should sound. Remind them to pay attention to the various attributes of fluent reading.
5. Next, have the students read the text aloud, either individually in a low voice or in front of the entire class.
6. After reading, have students document their reading on the checklist.

Pre-, while-, and post-reading activities to help students read effectively

Pre-reading activities:

These activities are meant to establish a purpose and create interest in the minds of students before they actually start reading. It encourages students to ponder what they already know about the subject and activate their prior knowledge. It also nudges them to make predictions about what they will read in the text provided. 

Some simple pre-reading activities to include in your next reading lesson are:

1. Arrange in a Sequence

Gather a few pictures related to the topic that students will be reading. Print a few sets of the images and share them with students. You could divide the class into groups depending on class strength. Students then look at the pictures and determine the sequence of the story by arranging them in a particular order.

One of the members of each group can share how they think the topic or story will unfold by describing their sequence to the entire class. After reading, kids can confirm which group made the best prediction.  

2. Discuss the Title

Let students find a partner for this pre-reading activity. Now write the title of the book or reading material on poster-size paper. Instruct students to discuss the title with their partners and brainstorm ideas or concepts they think will be covered in the text.

Give them a couple of minutes to organize their thoughts and write them down on sticky notes. They can put up their notes on the poster around the title to keep a record of their ideas and thoughts prior to reading.

3. Watch and Talk

The internet is filled with many useful resources. Find a video related to the topic students will be reading and show it to the class. Make sure the video is not very long. It should be just enough to give them some idea and boost their interest and engagement toward the topic.

Later, invite students to talk about their thoughts and perspectives about the topic and see what they have to say. Through this activity, students will learn that every person has their own perspective and that each of them matters.

4. Pictionary

Your students may not be aware of all the words present in a passage. To support their reading, you can conduct a small activity called Pictionary before they read the material. Select new words from the passage and write them with their meanings on the whiteboard.

Prepare a few paper chits with the selected words. Invite a student to the whiteboard and have them pick up a chit. They can refer to the word-meaning list on the board and then draw things that indicate the word without using any letters or numbers. 

The rest of the class can now guess the word with the help of the given list. This will reinforce their knowledge of new words and their meanings. You can further extend this activity by discussing the synonyms and antonyms of all the new words in the passage.

5. What Do You Know?

Begin this activity by showing the book cover to the students. Read out the title and the name of the author. Now write a few important keywords related to the topic on the whiteboard and ask students to recall what they know about it. This activity helps to activate prior knowledge and gives students a chance to learn from one another. 

Now have your students stand in two concentric circles, with one student from the smaller circle facing another student from the larger circle. As the game begins, both students exchange what they know about the given topic. Now the students in the smaller circle shift one place toward the left. All students will now have a different partner to share information with. 

Continue shifting places until students in the smaller circle arrive at their initial positions. In the end, all students in the smaller circle would have gotten a chance to exchange their knowledge with peers standing in the larger circle.  

After this session, you can have a common discussion about the author, their writing style, and the names of some of their other works if time permits.

While-reading activities:

These activities are designed to help students comprehend the text by focusing on its various aspects. It encourages students to analyze the text, tackle vocabulary, and practice different types of reading skills required for quick comprehension of text. 

Some ideas for while-reading activities are:

1. What’s the Main Idea?

Every paragraph of a text has a main idea that the author elaborates upon, and identifying it is important for reading comprehension. For this activity, have students pass an object as the music starts. The student who has the object when the music stops must read the first paragraph aloud and explain the main idea.

They can even write their ideas on the whiteboard. Continue passing the object until students have covered all paragraphs. Upon completion, they will have a note of all the key things the author has talked about in the write-up, which will help them better understand the subject.

2. Word Detectives

Even after you discuss important vocabulary as a pre-reading activity, students may have difficulty understanding other words or sentences. To address this, have your students make a note of the words they were unable to comprehend while reading. Let them put their list in a ‘difficult vocabulary’ jar. Now write the list of all difficult words on the board and make small teams act as ‘word detectives’. 

Detectives can use a dictionary, either online or in hard copy, or other resources to find the meaning of all difficult words. The team that completes the task at the earliest shares the word meanings with the class and is awarded the title of ‘Word Detectives of the Day.’

3. True or False

Prepare a list of 10–15 statements related to the topic. Frame the sentences in such a way that some of them are true while others are false in the context of the topic. Print enough copies to give one to every pair of students. Instruct students to partner-read the text. Now they can take turns reading the true and false statements to each other and noting their individual answers to determine which of the given statements is true or false. 

Partners can reread the text to recheck their understanding if their answers don’t match certain statements. By the end of the reading session, all students would have likely gained a good understanding of the topic. You can either check the sheets individually to learn the extent to which students have understood the topic or discuss the answers with the entire class.

4. Read and Discuss

Sometimes, having a companion to read with is better than reading alone. With this thought in mind, divide students into groups of 3 or 4. Split the text into small sections and assign one section to each student. When students finish reading their sections, all students from other groups assigned to the same section come together and make a chart highlighting all its details. While doing so, students will develop a strong understanding of the section they were assigned. 

Now these new groups will come forward and read the section to the entire class and discuss its details, so everyone achieves better comprehension. Make sure the students follow the right sequence of sections during the discussion session to bring out the correct meaning of the text. 

5. Draw As You Read

This activity is a great way to engage students when reading a story. Ask students to read the first paragraph of the story and give them a few minutes to quickly draw a picture of what they just read in their notebook. Now have them read the next paragraph and make another image to demonstrate it.

Continue this until students reach the end of the story. Upon completion, every student will have a visual representation of the story, which they can share with their classmates. 

Post-reading activities:

Post-reading is the stage when students have new knowledge and know things they never knew before. Activities you conduct at this stage of reading should encourage students to reflect on their understanding of the topic and use their creativity to express what they have learned. It should help students further clarify their interpretations and achieve reading success. 

Examples of post-reading activities include:

1. Creative Summary

After students have finished reading the piece, they can prepare a creative summary of the topic. Give students the freedom to come up with unique ideas to showcase their understanding. They can create a summary poster with text and illustrations or use a cardboard box to present a scene and write a short summary on cardboard walls. Remind them to add vivid details, use clear language, and add relevant examples to make their summaries interesting.

2. Recall the Story

Recalling is an activity that helps kids learn more proficiently and enhance long-term memory. To use this as a post-reading activity, one student will start recalling the story from the beginning. Ask them to share just one detail at a time.

Now the next student will continue to recall the story at the point where the previous student left. The activity continues until all students get an opportunity to share their input or the story comes to an end.

3. Act it Out

Pick some of the prominent scenes or ideas from the text that students have finished reading. Divide students into groups and assign one scene to each group. Give the students 15–20 minutes to ideate the scene and let them act it out in front of their peers.

This activity allows students to use gestures and emotions to reflect how well they have understood the scene and the story. It also encourages them to pay attention to details and execute the task in a well-designed manner.

4. The New Ending

After watching a movie, we sometimes wish it had a different ending. The same might happen when we read a story. Usually, students get to know about the author’s perspective on how the story should end but rarely get a chance to think about how they would like it to conclude.

Therefore, give your students this chance by asking them to write a new ending for the story they just read. As every student will come up with their own idea of the story’s conclusion, it would be interesting for other students to listen when their peers read out their versions to the entire class.

5. Partner Interviews

In this write-up, we will be discussing a few effective strategies students can implement to monitor their own reading. This will help them gradually become independent readers who need little to no intervention, whether they’re reading an educational text or their favorite storybook!

What is “Monitoring” in reading, and why is it important?

When readers ascertain if they understand what they are reading, they knowingly or unknowingly monitor their reading. Monitoring allows readers to pay attention to visuals, language structures, and the meaning of individual sentences to get an overall idea of the text. It encourages them to pause and notice if there’s something in the text they don’t understand or if something seems wrong and makes no sense.

Self-monitoring is important because it promotes active learning. There can be instances when students read a piece of text fluently but fail to describe its meaning because they did not monitor their reading and ensure they understood the text. In these cases and others, monitoring serves as a tool involving metacognitive awareness through which a reader can control their own comprehension.

Self-monitoring strategies for students to become better readers

Before students apply monitoring strategies while reading, they must be able to figure out three things. First, realizing where the understanding or meaning of a text becomes unclear and the text does not make sense. Second, identify words or sentences they don’t understand. And third, deciding which strategies they can use to restore the meaning of the text. Once readers successfully do these three things, they can implement relevant strategies to improve their comprehension without asking for help.

Effective monitoring reading strategies you can explicitly teach your students, irrespective of their grade level, are:

1. Pause and think

Students can use this monitoring strategy whenever they read new information or feel they do not understand a piece of text. This is when they must pause and think about what they are having difficulty with. Is the text too complicated for them to understand, or are there some words whose meanings they are unsure of? Knowing what is causing hindrances to comprehension can help readers take appropriate steps to improve it.

2. Examine the visuals

The next step readers can take is to look at the visuals available along with the text. Visuals like images, charts, illustrations, etc., depict a given text in the most intricate ways. These give out clues that readers can pick up to understand the text. For example, an illustration in a storybook depicts what the text is talking about. Or a chart may have a summary of the written text. By studying the visuals closely, students can improve their understanding of the text.

3. Re-read the text

Re-reading is one of the most effective monitoring strategies. It takes the reader back to the text they find confusing or difficult to understand. Re-reading does not mean going through the text hurriedly one more time. To analyze the text at a deeper level, students must read slowly to derive meaning from what’s written. They can also read aloud, as it brings more clarity by improving their information processing and comprehension skills.

4. Visualize the text

Visualizing can be a powerful self-monitoring tool for readers if they know how to use it well. They must learn to visualize to understand what the text is trying to imply. Suppose a student is reading a story but finds himself stuck on a statement. He can then imagine the story or a particular part of the story to pinpoint the details and derive meaning from them. He can determine if something is wrong or missing, which is making comprehension difficult, and then see if he can correct it or fill in the missing link.

5. Ask relevant questions

Not to others but to oneself. By asking simple questions like where, when, who, etc., readers can find answers to what’s already given in the text, evaluate their understanding, and concentrate on important areas. They can also ask questions that help them find answers or meanings hidden within the text. For example, “What lesson have I learned from this story?” and so on.

6. Find meanings

Sometimes comprehension is difficult because the reader does not know the meaning of words that constitute a sentence or a paragraph. This self-monitoring strategy requires readers to pay attention to what they are reading so they can easily spot a word or a sentence they don’t know the meaning of. They can then use resources like dictionaries to find meanings and see if they can now comprehend the content.

7. Infer and make predictions

Another strategy to monitor reading is to infer or make predictions about the text using your background knowledge. Students can think along the lines of why a certain thing is happening in the text and try to draw a conclusion or predict what’s going to happen next. This applies better to reading stories that have a definitive plot with a beginning, middle, and end. A correct prediction indicates the reader has understood the text well. If it’s wrong, they can always go back to it and re-read it to support comprehension.

How do you encourage readers to use monitoring strategies while reading?

Young readers are not very efficient at implementing monitoring strategies. They concentrate more on decoding the words than deriving meaning from the sentences. As a teacher, you can encourage them to monitor their reading by asking them questions like –

• What makes you stop reading?
• Is there anything you do not understand?
• Can you identify your mistake?
• Which strategy can you use to understand the text?
• Did the strategy help you?

For advanced readers, you can create texts with deliberate errors so you can identify which students are monitoring their reading and which are not. Some ideas to add errors include adding contradicting statements, changing the sequence of the story, altering the title of the text, and placing wrong words in a paragraph that do not fit in the right context.

If students are reading actively and using monitoring strategies, you can observe them making faces, re-reading the text, and applying self-correcting behaviors. They will look happy if they are able to fix their difficulty, or they may turn toward you for help. Others who are not reading actively will not show any of these non-verbal cues. To fix this issue, you can provide students with checklists, like the self-monitoring reading comprehension checklist. 

Monitoring your students while they are self-monitoring their reading is essential so you can provide support to those who are not doing it or are having a tough time figuring out which strategies to implement and how.

For these individuals, reading programs come as a hope for building reading proficiency. These strategically designed programs help students build on these skills through a systematic approach and cover concepts like phonology, sound-symbol relation, morphology, etc., that together build reading fluency and comprehension. 

Although several reading programs are available for emergent and struggling readers, not all are backed by scientific evidence. Without research, one cannot be sure about the effectiveness of a particular reading program. Hence, in this article, we have enlisted some research-based reading programs that are known to help struggling readers develop fluency and proficiency in the English language. 

Powerful research-based reading programs for struggling readers 

1. Reading Horizons

Beginner and struggling readers face many challenges as they work their way to build reading proficiency. To help readers overcome these difficulties, Reading Horizons has developed a research- and science-based reading program that meets individual student needs so they can become fluent readers. Its interactive content includes lessons and activities that target areas like fluency, spelling, vocabulary, and comprehension skills. 

Reading Horizons has two separate programs addressing problems students of different grade levels face. The Reading Horizons Discovery program is meant for kindergarten to grade 3 students and concentrates on developing foundational reading skills in these students. It promotes sight recognition, phonological awareness, decoding, and encoding of words so early readers build a strong foundation in reading. 

On the other hand, the Reading Horizons Elevate program helps struggling readers of grade 4 and above. It is designed to fill the gaps in basic decoding skills that older students have trouble with, leading to reading difficulties. Overall, it is a well-designed program aligned with the Structured Literacy approach that helps special needs students and those with reading difficulties become successful and independent readers. 

What research says about Reading Horizons:

A study^[1] was conducted to determine the impact of the Reading Horizons program on the reading achievement of third-grade students. It included regular education students and those receiving intervention for reading fluency through special education services.

The data obtained after a year-long study showed significant growth in students’ reading fluency, and researchers inferred that Reading Horizon’s program could indeed help improve the reading proficiency of students in all grade levels.

2. Strategic Adolescent Reading Intervention (STARI)

STARI, or Strategic Adolescent Reading Intervention, is a Tier II intervention program designed for readers in grades 6-9 who struggle to read at their grade level and whose reading efficiency is two or more years below what it should be. Adolescents who have a tough time reading struggle to decode complex texts, which slows down their overall educational performance. 

Through STARI, struggling readers can work on their reading skills along with skills necessary for deep comprehension. As reading materials are aligned with student interests, it is easier to engage and motivate them to work on their reading stamina. The program also encourages discussions, partner reading, guided reading, and debates so that students get multiple outlooks on a given text, which helps develop complex reasoning. The recommended time to engage in the STARI program is 45-60 minutes 5 days a week. 

What research says about STARI:

An extensive research study^[2] examined if supplemental reading intervention can help struggling readers in middle school. 483 students studying in sixth to eighth grades were included in the study. These students were randomly assigned to a control group and the one receiving STARI as an intervention program.

Data about behavioral engagement and reading engagement was collected through teacher ratings. The study revealed that students receiving STARI outperformed the control group in word recognition, basic reading comprehension, and morphological awareness. And it also reinforced that the behavioral engagement of struggling adolescent readers to reading material helps grow their reading ability.

3. Read Naturally

Read Naturally is a reading program that teachers and parents can use in addition to the core curriculum to improve a student’s reading fluency and comprehension. The program has several sub programs which can be used depending on a reader’s current level. Each sub-program focuses on aspects like fluency, phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, and comprehension. 

These are based on a common strategy to build reading proficiency in young and adult readers. It includes teacher modeling, repeated reading, and progress monitoring. This strategy has several benefits for developing readers, like enhanced accuracy, better fluency, the ability to decode words, improved vocabulary, and more. As learners go through the material independently at their own pace, they don’t feel the pressure of learning and become better readers with regular engagement. 

What research says about Read Naturally:

Many studies^[3] examined the effectiveness of the Read Naturally intervention program. When a researcher reviewed these studies, he found enough evidence to support the use of Read Naturally for struggling readers. One study showcasing strong proof of the effectiveness of Read Naturally was conducted across six schools. 109 third-grade students with low reading performance participated in the study.

The experiential group received a 10-week intervention, 30 minutes daily for five days a week. Several results indicated that students who received the intervention outperformed in areas of accuracy and fluency. In fact, these students showed 39% greater performance in fluency than those in the control group. In addition, other evidence-based studies also indicate that Read Naturally is effective in helping struggling readers get better.

The Wilson Reading System (WRS) is an established reading program based on the science of reading. This Tier III structured literacy program is meant for struggling readers in grades 2-12. It is also a solid resource for students with learning disabilities, which makes reading a difficult task. 

The program is one of the several Orton-Gillingham-based reading programs and is formulated based on phonological-coding research. It is apt for one-on-one intervention or small student groups with a maximum of four students. Each lesson is divided into three blocks of 30 minutes each, and they recommend that in one week, students complete two full lessons.

A host of studies have confirmed the effectiveness of the Wilson Reading Program for improving reading skills in struggling readers and those with learning disabilities like dyslexia. In one study^[4], 51 students from six different schools were involved. All of them were receiving special education, and 62% of them had language impairment or a learning disability. Researchers inferred that WRS helped students achieve significant growth in reading over the course of the study period. 

Another study^[5] included 20 fourth and fifth-grade students with reading difficulties. The study went on for two years. Pre and post-intervention reading scores indicated better reading and comprehension skills in the study group.

5. Lindamood-Bell Seeing Stars and LiPS program 

Lindamood Bell programs are a bit different from other reading programs. They focus more on developing sensory and cognitive processes that underlie the reading and comprehension process. As reading is a cognitive action, Lindamood Bell programs strengthen sensory-cognitive functions such as phoneme awareness, symbol imagery, and concept imagery that aim at improving a child’s reading abilities. 

Two programs that are of particular interest to struggling readers are the Seeing Stars program and the LiPS program. Seeing Stars focuses on helping readers develop symbol imagery necessary for phonological and orthographic processing while reading. It allows readers to process information quickly and correct themselves immediately, enhancing their fluency. 

The LiPS or Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing program targets the areas of poor reading, spelling, and speech due to weak phonemic awareness in individuals. Such individuals have trouble spelling, word attacks, blending sounds, and understanding the differences between phonemes. Through this program, students work on their phonemic awareness. Readers are taught to identify oral-motor movements associated with different phonemes, which helps them verify various aspects of word sounds and assists in increasing their reading fluency.

What research says about Lindamood programs:

The Seeing Stars program was used for a research study^[6] to establish if intensive summer intervention can help struggling readers grow their reading skills. 31 children between 6-12 years of age and having reading difficulties were given 160 hours of intervention during their 8-week summer vacation. Students showed significant growth in their reading skills after the intervention period. 

Another report^[7] studied the effectiveness of LiPS in improving the reading proficiency of elementary students. It was found to be effective in building reading comprehension and had mixed results in the alphabetic domain.

6. Barton Reading and Spelling System

This reading program is suitable for people of all age groups who have a hard time reading and writing. It is also one of the structured literacy approach programs based on the Orton Gillingham methodology. It takes the tutor-student approach to build a student’s reading skills. Tutors are trained at different levels before they can help a student. They receive DVDs, manuals, letter tiles, and manipulatives to conduct the program successfully. 

Students with learning disabilities having difficulties in spelling and sounding out unknown words can particularly benefit from this program. However, there are a few prerequisites, like the student must be able to speak and understand spoken English as a second-grade student, their IQ must be 71 or higher, and they should pass the Barton Student Screening. 

What research says about Barton Reading and Spelling System:

A host of studies^[8] have proved the usefulness of the Barton Spelling and Reading System for struggling readers. One such study^[9] named “Significant Gains in Reading Made by Students with Dyslexia” was conducted in a Christian School in Pennsylvania. Participating students were first to sixth-grade students.

Each received one-on-one tutoring for three 40-minute sessions every week. Most of them received intervention from 2010 to 2013. Reading tests revealed that students participating in the program showed outstanding growth in reading abilities. Another study^[10] also revealed similar results.

1. Reading Level Test by EnglishClub

Reading level tests are either free or cost a couple of dollars to appear for the test. For those of you who would like to opt for a free test, we have the Reading Level Test by EnglishClub. This fifteen-minutes test assesses your ability to comprehend a given text while you read it. The faster you understand what you’re reading, the better your reading and comprehension skills. You will answer a total of twenty questions, depending on which your score is calculated. 

You will be given a percentage-based score that you can match with the table provided in the end to determine your reading level. For example, a score of 20-25% indicates Level 1 proficiency, whereas scores between 90-95% are considered upper advanced reading ability or Level 5.

2. The Reading Test by Oxford Online English

This test is again a free test which also encompasses twenty questions. What makes it different from the previous one is that it is not restricted to sentences. In fact, you get a big passage to read and then are required to answer questions based on the passage. Your performance on the test will depend on how well you read and comprehend the passage. 

Since it is not a time-bound test, you have nothing to worry about. Take your time to go through the text and begin answering only when you’re ready. Once you finish the test, the number of questions you’ve answered correctly is revealed along with your reading level. 

3. Macmillan Readers Level Test

This test by Macmillan Readers is a quick test designed for readers to evaluate their reading level. Comprising only seven questions, it is one of the shortest tests you can take to assess how well you can read. All questions are picture-based, which means a picture is also provided along with the question, and it serves as a clue to the answer. The questions can be in the format of “fill in the blank” or a regular question. 

The best aspect of taking this test is that after your reading level is shared with you, you will be directed to reading material according to your score. However, do note that all books they have are in British English. You may get some of those if you like or get books meant for your proficiency level from your local library. 

4. Oxford Bookworms and Dominoes Level Tests

Check your reading level by taking a test offered by Oxford Bookworms and Dominoes. For the benefit of readers, they have created tests for different reading levels, right from starter level to Level 6. You can take any of these tests depending on what you think is your present level. Every level has two tests with passages and drop-down boxes between the sentences to select the correct answer. Both tests are marked out of 30. 

Your score will tell you whether you are on the right reading level. Suppose you score anywhere between 0-23, it means the reading level is difficult for you, and you must try reading books that are a level below. All in all, these tests are great for precisely finding your present reading level. 

5. Lexile Quiz

Try this fun test to determine your reading level. All you have to do is attempt ten multiple-choice questions in the test. Questions vary in type and difficulty level. Those who score a 100% can proudly say they are at the master level. If you land between 50-70%, you’re at a standard level, and anything below it means you’re still at the beginning level, so you need to work more on these skills. 

The fun part of this test is that you receive a certificate of achievement at the end of the test. It is available for download after you customize it by entering your name. Interesting! Isn’t it? So, try this test so you can help yourself reach the master level soon.  

6. ACTFL Reading Proficiency Test

Here is a paid test that assesses a person’s reading ability in a particular language. It aims to determine a person’s reading fluency when presented with a spontaneous text. As the test is suitable to establish a wide range of reading proficiency in grade 12 students and adults, it is devised accordingly. The test is conducted online and comprises multiple-choice questions, which candidates must answer in a given time frame. You will get anywhere between 50-125 minutes for the test based on the category of test you are attempting. 

If you want to advance your career and are looking for proper certification for your reading skills, this test may be a good choice for you. It will cost you $51 to appear for the ACTFL Reading Proficiency Test (RPT). 

7. Read Forward

Your English reading skills shouldn’t be restricted to US English alone. You can always try resources from other countries, like this one from Canada. The only difference you will encounter is how some words are spelled differently. Using Read Forward, you can evaluate your reading skills and take steps to improve if required. 

The resource has six levels of reading tests, and the difficulty level rises from the first to the last test. There are several tests at one level that you can attempt at your own pace. Since this is a pen-and-paper format test, you will need to download the file and print it before taking the test. The resource also provides answer keys to know where you went wrong. 

8. Nelson-Denny Reading Test

The NDRT I & J, or the Nelson-Denny Reading Test, Forms I & J, tests a person’s reading rate, vocabulary, and comprehension skills. It is available in two formats – online and paper and pencil. So, you can choose the one you’re comfortable with. The test will require only 35 to 56 minutes of your time to assess your reading ability.

Coming to the format of the test, it is divided into two subcategories – vocabulary and comprehension. The vocabulary section consists of simple opening sentences, which you need to complete by selecting the best choice from the five options provided. In the comprehension section, there are seven passages and 36 related questions. In addition, there is also an optional Reading Rate subtest so candidates can record the number of words they can read in a minute at their normal speed. 

9. Diagnostic Assessments of Reading (DAR – 2)

This test helps establish a person’s reading level by assessing areas of fluency, accuracy, spelling, phonological awareness, word recognition, word analysis, and more. In 30 to 45 minutes, one can know how well they can read and identify areas that need improvement.

As the test is available as a kit, it can be conducted for individual candidates or a group of adults. You get question books and response record forms for students, along with a teacher’s manual and software with Trial Teaching Strategies. The fact that this test bundle is obtainable as a kit makes it apt for adult literacy programs and special education. 

10. Wide Range Achievement Test

The fifth edition of the Wide Range Achievement Test, or WRAT5, is not just a test for reading ability but also covers math skills. But one has the option of appearing for only the subtests they’re interested in. For assessment of reading level, you can only take the word reading and sentence comprehension subtests. Upon completion of the test, you get a Reading Composite score by combining the scores of the two subtests.

The test is available as a written and online test, and it takes around 35 to 45 minutes to complete. Overall, this easy-to-administer test with clear scoring guidelines is useful in testing the reading capabilities of individuals and determining the possibility of learning disabilities.

The approach has proven effective and is still often used to assist kids with dyslexia and other reading problems in strengthening their reading ability.

2. Reading recovery history & development

For English-speaking children aged five or six who have the lowest reading achievement following their first year of school, Reading Recovery is a discredited short-term intervention strategy. For instance, a referral to a Reading Recovery program might be acceptable for a kid who, after a year in school, is unable to read the simplest of books or write their own name. The intervention entails rigorous one-on-one classes with a tutor using the Reading Recovery technique for 30 minutes a day for a period of 12 to 20 weeks.

In the 1970s, Marie Clay, a teacher from New Zealand, created Reading Recovery. It emphasizes teaching pupils how to decipher words as well as the sounds and grammar of the English language. 2. Might be challenging to apply in a situation with many children in a classroom.
3. For pupils who have difficulties with comprehension or other reading-related skills, this method might not be successful.
4. Time-consuming and may call for many sessions each week.
5. Due to the price and lack of qualified teachers, it might not be affordable for many pupils.

Pros and cons of Reading Recovery

Pros of Reading Recovery:

5. Can be used in a school environment with no impact on the general curriculum.

Cons of Reading Recovery:

1. Can be pricey, especially if used extensively.
2. Requires both instructors and students to put in a lot of time.
3. For kids with significant learning difficulties or other underlying disorders that impair their ability to read and write, this method might not be helpful.
4. Due to price and availability, some students might not be able to access it.
5. Strongly relies on individual assistance, which might not be possible for schools with minimal resources.

What does research state for both?

The Orton-Gillingham approach is a structured and systematic method of teaching phonics that is designed to help students with dyslexia and other learning disabilities improve their reading and writing skills. The approach involves breaking down words into their component sounds and teaching students to recognize and decode these sounds.

The research study^[1] is an article by Tom Nicholson titled “Orton-Gillingham approach – what is it and is it research-based?” which was published in the LDA Bulletin in May 2011. The article provides an overview of the Orton-Gillingham approach to teaching reading and writing, discusses the research on the approach, and evaluates its effectiveness.

Apart from the fact that the OG approach has various reading programs, The Reading recovery program has the most significant effect on discontinued students on measures designed for the program. A meta-analysis^[2] was conducted on 36 studies of Reading Recovery (RR), which is a tutorial intervention designed to improve the literacy skills of low-performing first-grade students.

The meta-analysis found positive program effects for both discontinued and not discontinued students on outcomes tailored to the program and standardized achievement measures. The researchers found no evidence suggesting that the observed effects could be entirely explained by factors resulting from methodological flaws, such as regression artifacts. The study challenges conventional belief and provides evidence for the effectiveness of the Reading Recovery program.

Which is better for kids with LD?

Despite the fact that both programs have been proven to be successful for students with learning impairments, they each take a distinct approach and could be more beneficial for particular learner types. While Reading Recovery may be better suitable for kids who struggle with fundamental reading abilities but do not have a diagnosed learning disability, Orton Gillingham is often advised for individuals with serious reading issues or dyslexia.

The optimal strategy for each individual kid will ultimately depend on their unique requirements and the suggestions made by their education team. In order to decide what is ideal for each kid, it is crucial to engage closely with educators and other professionals who have received training in these programs.
