Whether it is a school or a workplace, a social committee ensures that every individual feels socially accepted and involved. Promoting the social well-being of individuals leads to improved relationships and enhanced communication. A social committee in school is responsible for creating a socially positive environment for the teaching staff by engaging them in activities that help build relationships, boost morale, and increase social satisfaction.

Right from celebrating the milestones of teachers to helping them during their tough times, a social committee forms an integral part of the school community. This calls for a wide variety of creative ideas to not only enhance engagement but also foster a sense of unity and support among educators and staff. So, with options not limited to just art or a picnic, this article brings to you a combination of ideas that tap into different needs of social well-being and promote a thriving school environment.

Engaging ideas for a social committee of teachers

Social well-being is a significant factor in boosting morale, creating intrigue, and building an ever-lasting impactful community. The below-mentioned ideas are categorized into certain combinations of creativity, learning, celebration, and outdoor activities perfect for socially motivating teachers.

I. Recreational ideas for social committees

Recreational ideas are the ones that are easy and do not require extreme preparations. They also help teachers share their experiences in a relaxed atmosphere. These ideas are designed to provide a rejuvenating and stress-free environment for educators.

1. Friday is a Fun Day

Celebrating various days and festivals in school is a part of the curriculum. However, this idea is unique. Arrange an opportunity for teachers to dress up and display their creativity. In this, you can think of creative ideas and make Friday a day of fun for teachers.

It could be – Unique Hat Day, No Bags Day, Traditional Day, and so on. Every time you conduct this, ensure to announce the top three teachers who did well in executing their creative thinking and imagination skills. Such an idea promotes a healthy working environment and elevates the spirit of participating.

2. Potluck!

Potluck is one of the famous ways to encourage teachers to jam up and be socially cordial with each other. Just like any other Potluck, you can arrange a potluck lunch party among teachers. Every teacher gets a unique food dish from their culture to present for the potluck.

While teachers share their food, make sure each one is encouraged to talk about their food dish and preparation. Teachers may also team up to represent a specific culture of the world. Motivate others to appreciate the unique culture and cooking practices. It creates a sense of acceptance, inclusion, and love for each other’s culture.

3. Be the Picasso

Encouraging creativity is essential to boost the morale of educators and break the monotonous schedule. Moreover, any art form encourages teachers to participate without the pressure of winning or losing. It also enhances communication and appreciation among teachers.

Organize a paint party where teachers have fun with colors. You can go for a different artwork every time you organize this to provide teachers with unique experiences and encourage maximum participation that offers them to learn a new skill. Such an idea promotes cooperation, collaboration, and diversity in the school.

4. The Lunch Box Match!

Isn’t it fun to share different recipes of the same ingredient? This idea inspires teachers to try something out of the box for their lunch boxes. For this idea, you can decide on a common ingredient for every month. Make sure the ingredient is easily available and can be included in many recipes.

Announce the ingredients at the start of the month and fix a date. Everyone gets something made out of this ingredient and keeps their lunch boxes on the table. For example, if the ingredient is chocolate, teachers may get brownies, cakes, smoothies, and so on. Later, allow them to share their experiences while preparing the dish. Teachers can also be divided into teams for this idea so that every teacher can participate and have fun all the while learning and collaborating.

II. Outdoor Activity Ideas for Social Committees

While teachers enjoy indoor activities, it is super important to head out in the sun and keep the spirit alive. Outdoor activities help teachers zone out from the everyday work and enjoy the time with other teachers.

1. A Local Journey

Though picnics are so much fun for all individuals, however, imagine arranging a local trip for teachers where they get a chance to relax and rejuvenate. It offers a different feeling of joy traveling with co-teachers and sharing experiences throughout the journey. This idea is simple and can be easily organized during weekends.

For this, select a local place nearby which could include a beach, a museum, or a spacious park. Let teachers dress casually and arrange a few games considering the location. You may also ask them to strike different poses for photographs & memories. A day where teachers only relax and have fun surely boosts their morale and freshens their souls.

2. Beach Day

Everyone loves heading out and enjoying a relaxing time. It is significant to encourage teachers to communicate with each other and be comfortable. A beach day is a common idea however, you can make it extraordinary too. Involve the fun elements throughout the journey to make everyone feel the fun!

For this idea, start with the journey itself. For example, if it is a bus journey, make sure to engage teachers in a singing competition between two teams. As soon as you reach the beach, strike up a fun conversation and encourage teachers to talk about any of their funny memories of the beach.

Later, play beach games like cricket or Red Rover. You may also play passing the parcel with fresh punishments for whoever has the ball in hand. This will surely leave a lasting impact on teachers and refresh them for a wonderful week ahead.

3. A Scavenger Hunt!

Being in a classroom surrounded by books and students can surely be tiring at the end of the day. It is significant for teachers to feel fresh and energized after all the effort. The scavenger hunt is indeed a fun idea to improve social skills and collaboration among them.

Plan a specific day and look for as many natural elements in the school playground. Make a list of these elements and write them on a paper. Make a team of 2 teachers each and allow them to find all the elements within a specific time. As they run around, talk, compete, and collaborate, they are likely to feel a sense of belonging to everyone. You may also look for team-building activities for teachers to boost their networking skills.

III. Educational Ideas for Social Committees

Combining fun with learning is not only beneficial for students but also for teachers. Educational Ideas are the ones that help teachers learn while interacting and enjoying. The below-mentioned educational ideas are refreshing, fresh, and energizing.

1. Talent Festival

Every teacher is an expert in the subject they teach. Such an idea allows teachers to showcase something that they love and are good at. A strong social committee can be formed only when teachers are aware of each other’s unique talents. With a platform where they receive appreciation, teachers are sure to have a great time with each other.

All you need to do is arrange a Talent Festival for teachers. They are free to showcase any talent they possess which includes singing, dancing, painting, writing poems, devotional singing, yoga, or even if it is cracking super funny algebra jokes in the class. The point is to let them exhibit their skills and be the shining stars on the stage. It helps build a sense of community and support for each other.

2. The Exchange Fair

Teachers are true innovators as they keep looking for ways to provide better learning experiences to students. May it be helpful behavior tracking apps or Google extensions useful for presentation, every teacher might have something fresh to share. This idea allows teachers to learn, exchange, and acknowledge the helpful ways of teaching shared by everyone else.

In the Exchange Fair, teachers get an opportunity to share their knowledge and research skills. They may share the names of apps used for preparing reports, math blogs, or any kind of information useful for everyone else. Such an idea helps teachers learn from each other thereby developing respect and cooperation between them. It also instills a sense of active learning in them.

3. A Resourceful Workshop

Teachers also need skill enhancement and training to utilize their capabilities to their fullest potential. Hence, it is vital to consider a social committee that thinks of the growth and development of teachers. For this idea, you need to look for resourceful individuals to address the teachers.

Invite famous personalities or experts who can enhance the teaching experience for teachers. Conduct different workshops which could also go beyond the aspects of teaching. If there is a new application for preparing reports, you can conduct a workshop to guide teachers.

Also, a workshop on mindfulness where different resources can be shared with teachers is also great for fostering well-being and promoting a healthy school environment. Similarly, there could be different growth, success, research skills, and mindfulness workshops.

IV. Morale Boosting Ideas for Social Committees

Stacks of papers, preparing reports, and handling students; all can be tiring. It is the responsibility of a social committee to ensure the well-being of teachers. Morale-boosting ideas focus on providing the much-needed motivation to keep going!

1. The Fun Bucket List

Everyone including teachers sure has their bucket lists which might include traveling or buying something precious. However, this bucket list taps into the essence of encouragement and boosts self-esteem. For this idea, you need to think of different activities that are simple yet include a sense of fulfillment after the completion. Indulging teachers into such an idea broadens their mindset and imagination.

In this idea, make a bucket list with 15 to 20 different things to tick off. You can consider the following list to prepare a unique yet thoughtful bucket list.

Share a hilarious video in the teacher’s group

Indulge in your favorite hobby for one day and share a picture

Take a day off and practice self-care

Put a funny poster in the classroom

Talk to someone you don’t talk much with

Involve music while teaching

Compliment the non-teaching staff

Enjoy your lunch time without working during the break

Take a short walk in the garden

Talk to a stranger

Reconnect with an alumni or an old student of the school

Write a positive affirmation for teachers on the common board

Get your favorite meal

Attend a fun workshop

Ditch the lunch and order for yourself

Similarly, you can think of many such ideas that are apt for teachers considering their interests. Such a bucket list which includes many tasks allows teachers to choose as per their interests. It also sets a fun challenge where they get to interact about it every day.

2. The Appreciation Month!

Positive words and appreciation go a long way in inspiring individuals. While teachers often receive thank-you notes from students, receiving appreciation and words of kindness from co-teachers certainly brightens the day. For this idea, all you need to do is place a huge bowl in the staff room or a common area for teachers.

Dedicate different days for different teachers and announce it to everyone. Co-teachers and non-teaching staff need to express their appreciation towards the teacher and write words of kindness. Once done, they should put the cards in the bowl without mentioning their names. After every 2 days, read these positive words and continue the practice unless every teacher is appreciated in a unique way. You can also use teacher appreciation quotes to add an emotional touch to it.

3. Birthday Bags

Birthdays in schools are always exciting for students; however, teachers should also be treated in a special manner. It is time to go beyond cake-cutting ceremonies and involve teachers in celebrating the joy. This idea helps teachers support a noble cause while indulging in a creative time.

For this idea, arrange canvas tote bags which are simply solid colors without any design. Provide fabric colors to teachers and make it a tradition to paint these bags on birthdays. Teachers could paint any design or scenery on the bag.
Field trips hold a significant value when it comes to education and provide a great change to the regular traditional teachings. Field trips help kids come out of their comfort zones, explore new things, and view things from a whole new lens which is unique and beneficial for their holistic development.

While field trips are an amazing source of learning for kids, it can be a challenging task for teachers to plan one. Making tons of arrangements, completing lots of formalities, preparing various documents, and whatnot. It can take teachers weeks or months to plan a successful field trip.

However, a comprehensive field trip checklist is a wonderful aid for teachers to make their trip-planning process fun and thrilling. In this post, we have added a comprehensive field trip checklist for teachers that is handy and easy to use. So, go ahead and plan an amazing trip for students with the help of a checklist.

Before that, let’s cover some benefits of a field trip for students.

Why are field trips important for students?

Field trips are a source of knowledge and wisdom for children and work like a miracle to teach kids some real-life lessons. Some other benefits of a field trip for children are-

1. Enhances critical thinking

Field trips stimulate kids to think critically and thoroughly understand the concepts. It helps kids brainstorm and brings fun and excitement to traditional learning. Field trips allow kids to ponder over the situations from a unique viewpoint and incorporate their innovation in their learnings.

2. Opportunity to analyze from a different perspective

Field-based learning improves the analyzing skills of kids and helps them evaluate things from different perspectives. It helps kids reach conclusions through different and creative means and in the process teaches them a wide range of important lessons that would not have been possible in classroom teachings.

3. Interactive learning

Field trips are a great way to view things, analyze them, and then understand them. This process of interactive learning provides an in-depth understanding of a concept that goes beyond rote learning. It also helps children apply the learned concepts in practical life and gain real-life experiences of theoretical concepts.

4. Socio-emotional learning

Field trips provide real-world experience to children and cultivate better social skills and emotional intelligence in kids. Children learn to better relate to other individuals and understand the importance of empathy, cooperative learning, and gratitude in real life. It is a great way to promote socio-emotional learning in little children.

5. Improved academic success

Educational trips reduce academic boredom, give a break from monotonous learning, and improve the academic success rate among kids. Field trips provide new motivation and zeal to learn and help kids improve their shortcomings and grow as a person. Additionally, field trips are not only super useful for academic success, rather they are a wonderful means to provide kids with some practical learning.

6. Exploration and independence

Another major benefit of field trips is to help kids explore unique realms of learning and find solutions to theoretical as well as practical problems on their own through experimentation and exploration. This will help make kids independent while finding solutions to problems and not rely on teachers or peers for every small or big difficulty they face while learning.

7. Experiential learning

What kids comprehend through their experiences, stays with them for their lifetime. Field trips help kids view things applicable outside the four walls of the classroom and help them make connections between various real-world phenomena. Whether it is a trip to a museum or a science laboratory, field trips are full of wonderful examples of experiential learning.

9. Cultural growth and personal development

Field trips are a great way to educate kids regarding different cultures and boost their personal development. It helps kids develop as a person and nurtures skills, such as effective communication, empathy, tolerance, etc. It also teaches kids how to behave and respond in different settings and treat people with different cultures and ideologies.

Field trip checklists for teachers

Given the above advantages of field trips for kids, it is necessary to be careful while planning and make sure they make the most of this opportunity. So, in order to do that, this field trip checklist is divided into different sections and will help teachers be systematic and organized during their field trip planning. The checklist includes-

“In today’s rush, we all think too much— seek too much— want too much — and forget about the joy of just being.”– Eckhart Tolle

A wonderful mindfulness quote that greatly relates to our teachers.

We are constantly surrounded by various stimuli related to our past and present, resulting in not living in the moment and not enjoying our present. It has led us nowhere but to various psychological and emotional problems.

Educators, who are the pillars of a healthy child’s foundation are no exception to this reality. While it is a huge problem, there is also a practical solution to it, which is being mindful.

Mindfulness is the practice of being fully aware of our present, consciously aware of our present thoughts, actions, and emotions, and having control of them. In this post, we have covered some amazing mindfulness resources for educators that they can easily apply in their lives and classrooms and have a fulfilling and joyful life.

Amazing mindfulness resources for teachers

V. Best Practices

Some amazing and easy-to-implement mindfulness practices are-

1. Mindful Breathing

Mindful Breathing is getting aware of your breathing pattern. You don’t have to purposefully breathe fast or slow to be mindful of your breathing, rather, breathe normally, and focus on the ins and outs of your breath. You can do this anytime, you feel like you are losing touch with the present. If you are practicing mindful breathing in specifically challenging situations, try to inhale for 3 seconds through your nostrils, hold it for 2 seconds, and slowly exhale in about 4 seconds. Repeat the process until you begin to feel calm.

2. Mindful Listening

Mindful listening or active listening is another great mindfulness practice for educators that can be done anytime and anywhere. It simply involves listening to others with a genuine intent of responding and trying to avoid criticism, judgment, or other thoughts while listening to others. It is an effective method of communication and being aware of the present moment. It also helps the listener become aware of the speaker’s thoughts and emotions and communicate efficiently.

3. 5 senses technique: 5-4-3-2-1

A super effective technique to gather your scattered thoughts and emotions and focus on the present moment. Begin with noticing five things you can see around yourself, four things you can feel, three things you can hear, two things you can smell, and one thing you can taste. Again, this can be easily done in the classroom and will help the educators focus on the present moment with complete concentration.

The end of the school year is indeed one of the most challenging times for teachers. Finishing up all the previous tasks, preparing grade cards, sorting all the data and records, preparing for next fall, and whatnot. All of it can be a bit overwhelming.

However, with an end-of-the-year checklist for teachers, you can stay organized in your tasks and avoid last-minute rush. This checklist will ensure you have all the end-of-the-year tasks compiled in one place in a manageable form that you can complete at your pace and have a stress-free holiday before your next term begins.

This checklist will also provide an opportunity to go back and reflect on your achievements and learn from your own experiences. It can act as a great morale booster for teachers and can prepare them for an amazing next term.

Given that, in this post, we have covered an extensive end-of-the-year checklist that covers every task that needs to be completed by teachers at the end of the year to make their duration of session end merrier.

Before that, let’s see what are some of the benefits of an end-of-the-school year checklist.

Benefits of using the end-of-the-year checklist for teachers

An end-of-the-year checklist is a great resource at educators’ disposal to keep their tasks organized and have relaxing days at the end of the term. Apart from that, some other major benefits of an end-of-the-year checklist for teachers include-

1. Smooth Organization of the Tasks

End of the end-of-the-year checklist is a great way for teachers to stay organized and wrap up the last-moment tasks in an effective manner. Using a checklist, teachers can also prioritize important tasks first, without compromising on not-so-important tasks

2. Brings a sense of Peace

A checklist ensures teachers close their term on time and without any rush, resulting in a sense of peace and accomplishment. It is highly necessary to reflect on the previous year’s achievements and plan for next year’s goals.

3. Time-Management

End-of-the-year checklist for teachers is a great time-saver and helps them distribute their time effectively on important tasks without getting lost by distractions. It will also ensure you finish up all your tasks on time and are not overstaying due to administrative or other work.

4. Effective communication with colleagues and principal

Following a checklist will ensure that your tasks are completed on time and you are all geared up for next fall. In that case, you can effectively contribute to the end of the year’s colleague meetings and one one-on-one sessions with the principal regarding pressing matters and how to best strategize for the upcoming term.

5. Saves time for communication with parents

It is a nice idea to meet and plan a communication once at the end of the year with parents to ease their worries regarding how to prepare their child for the upcoming term or if any problem from the current term has to be discussed. It is an important activity at the end of the year that is often overlooked or carried out in a hurry, but with a checklist prepared and followed, you are all set to execute this meet-up efficiently.

6. Reflect and plan

Self-reflection at the end of the year is highly necessary to keep oneself motivated for the next term and reassess their strategies. Reflection and planning are a part of the checklist and it helps learn from past failures and provide an opportunity to celebrate achievements. End-of-the-year checklist will also help replan your teaching strategies and go-to approach in case you wish to do that, by saving you enough time and peace of mind.

7. Personal and Professional Development

An end-of-the-year checklist is a great tool to save valuable time and engage in activities that will help in personal and professional development. A checklist will remind teachers to enroll in any program they wish to, to refine their skills, amid all the important year-end work.

8. Stress reduction

Stress reduction is another major benefit of the end-of-the-year checklist. With everything planned and going according to the plans, teachers can stay stress-free and wrap up their term on a positive note and with a sense of fulfillment.

What should an end-of-the-year checklist for teachers consist of?

The given-below end-of-the-year checklist is divided into certain major categories that are all important and need to be checked off sooner, rather than later. This checklist will refine your organization skills and will save you from random tasks that keep popping into your mind and can be overwhelming at already challenging times.

Math teachers! Do your current goals look something like this? –

“I will help my students do better in math.”
“I will work on developing my skills as a math teacher.”

If yes, it’s time to think again. Goals like these take you nowhere close to where you want to be because of a lack of clarity. These are the types of goals that most people set for themselves at the beginning of the year and forget about in the next two months. If you really want to benefit from goal-setting, you need to change the way you frame your goals. And this is where SMART goals come in.

Want to know more about SMART goals and how they can help you? Stick with us until the end of this blog post as we talk about what SMART goals really mean and give you a few sample goal ideas to help you create your own.

What are SMART goals in education?

SMART goal is a goal-setting system that can be applied to any field or profession. In the context of education, SMART goals are highly specific goals that guide a teacher to bring improvements to their teaching practice and achieve desired student outcomes.

What sets apart SMART goals from regular goals lies in the meaning of ‘SMART.’ Here, the word SMART is an acronym for five essential components that must be included in a goal. These are:

S: Specific

A specific and focused goal has a better chance of being met than a vague goal. For example, “I want my students to improve in math” is an unclear goal that lacks direction. On the other hand, “I want my students to improve in algebra” is more specific, directing the teacher to concentrate more on this math operation. So, a SMART goal should be focused on a particular content area or students’ needs.

M: Measurable

A SMART goal is measurable. As in, you can easily and accurately measure the success of your goal by adding in how much progress you want to see in a given time frame. Measurable goals help you track progress and encourage you to achieve better results.

A: Attainable

Setting goals is the easy part. Achieving them is hard. To ensure that you work towards attaining your goal without getting disheartened, you must set an achievable goal. SMART goals are attainable, which means there is no need to go overboard. It requires you to set a realistic goal that you think is possible to achieve.

R: Relevant

A relevant goal is something that aligns with your objectives and vision. To create a relevant goal, ask yourself the reason for setting a particular goal. Your answer will help you decide if the goal is worthwhile and if now is the right time to add it to your SMART goals list.

T: Time-Bound

Most goals people set for themselves are forgotten with time because they don’t have a set time frame to accomplish them. A time-based goal makes you feel accountable and gives you that extra push to work toward it, leaving procrastination behind.

20 SMART goals ideas to assist math teachers in setting their own personal goals

1. This school year, all my students will show growth through better results in math, and 80% of them will attain the benchmark score in the final math assessment.

2. 85% of my students will demonstrate the use of critical thinking skills and accurate application of algebraic math concepts by earning a grade C or higher in the mid-term math assessment.

3. By the end of this academic year, 90% of my students will secure a grade higher than their current level in the standardized math assessment test.

4. This school year, the percentage of students exceeding the standards on district math assessments will be 10% higher than the previous school year, i.e., 80%.

5. In the 2023–24 school year, my students will improve their estimation skills by 20% compared to the previous year and will demonstrate this in a test on estimation concepts.

12. I will conduct quarterly math assessments to see how well my students understand math concepts and use the results to improve my teaching practices and student outcomes in the form of better scores.

13. By the end of this quarter, I will come up with a plan to help the weak students in my math class.
When math teachers set SMART goals for themselves, they are likely to experience the following benefits:

It motivates them to grow in their teaching career.

It gives them a direction, so they know which path to follow.

It helps them plan and organize their goals effectively.

It allows them to monitor their progress and that of their students.

It helps them avoid procrastination and take charge of completing set tasks.

They are pushed further to work toward achieving their goals and improving themselves.

In essence

Setting SMART goals is the way to go if you are serious about improving yourself as a teacher and making learning impactful in your math classroom. Creating SMART goals may take some time, especially if you’re new to this whole idea, but we bet you won’t regret the time you spent creating them.

Start small with just a few specific goals and feel the difference. Your life as a teacher will be much more focused and result-oriented. This will bring an improvement in your math teaching skills and help build your self-esteem. Your students will ultimately benefit from your new goal-setting approach, as they will observe a boost in their performance and their love for numbers.

Are you a preschool teacher looking for a simple, effective, and convenient option to keep a check on your students and classroom? Say hello to our collection of preschool checklists for teachers! We know, as teachers, you have a busy schedule. Hence, our checklists are not too demanding and will require a little of your time to make assessments. These checklists cover important areas to help you make observations and identify specific areas that need your attention to make improvements.

In one of our previous blog posts, we provided you with three preschool lesson plan templates to assist you in your teaching endeavors. This blog post brings to you two important checklists every preschool teacher needs to evaluate students and their learning environment. The first one is the preschool developmental checklist, and the second is the preschool classroom quality checklist. Both checklists are available for you in PDF format and are totally free!

However, if you are more of a DIY person and would like to make your own checklist, feel free to use the given points as inspiration and add in other aspects you would like to cover to come up with a customized checklist for your classroom.

Essential preschool checklists to add to a teacher’s arsenal

I. Preschool Developmental Checklist

Developmental checklists are tools that allow teachers to record observations related to skills that a child of a specific age must possess. A preschool developmental checklist covers all skill areas like cognitive development, physical development, adaptive skills, and more to help preschool teachers evaluate different aspects of a child’s development. Any delays can be easily pointed out when teachers use a checklist, which makes it possible to provide timely intervention. These checklists also serve as a formal record, which can be useful for sharing student-specific information in the future.

Use our preschool developmental checklist quarterly or as per your needs to monitor student progress in various areas of development. Observe your preschoolers carefully and regularly to be able to answer the questions accurately. You can use a ‘yes,’ ‘no,’ or ‘sometimes’ to answer questions given in the checklist.

The list of questions covered in our preschool developmental checklist is given below:

A. Cognitive Skills

Does the child:

B. Social-Emotional Skills

Does the child:

1. Enjoy pretend play
2. Get back to normal after having a temper tantrum
10. Stay with you during individual and group discussions
11. Understand and follow instructions like ‘cleanup’ or ‘no running

C. Language Skills

Does the child:

D. Adaptive Skills

Can the child:

Use the toilet with little or no help

Wear items like a jacket or shoes with minimal assistance

Use a comb with or without assistance to fix hair

Wash hands with soap and water and use a tissue to dry them up

E. Gross Motor Skills

Can the child:

F. Fine Motor Skills

Can the child:

Zip up a coat

Put puzzle pieces together

Manage to button up a shirt

Use scissors for paper-cutting

Trace some letters using a pencil or marker

Create structures using building blocks and break them down

II. Preschool classroom quality checklist

This checklist can help preschool teachers ascertain if their classroom meets the quality standards required to provide little kids with an engaging and stimulating learning environment in the early years of school. With so many tasks to accomplish during a typical school day and a bunch of kids to teach and look after, it is possible to miss keeping a check on some aspects of the classroom. However, having a checklist can help teachers quickly identify what areas of the classroom need attention so that children are not deprived of things that are vital for learning.

The best time to use a classroom quality checklist is at the beginning of the school year. By doing so, you can make sure your classroom is all set and ready to welcome its students. You can also do a recheck of all elements of classroom organization periodically during the school year using the checklist provided.

Here are the queries that make up a preschool classroom quality checklist:

Are wall displays put up at the child level?

Is the classroom equipped with good-quality books for children?

Are there enough books on a wide variety of subjects available for kids?

Does the class have visual aids to guide children through different activities?

Are there enough writing tools and materials available?

Do you have a handy list of student names with their food allergies and dietary restrictions available in your class?

Are there a variety of learning centers set up to support learning?

Are daily routines (written and visual) displayed on a classroom wall?

Are shelves and containers labeled with names and picture cues for easy identification by children?

Is there enough distance between active and quiet learning centers to ensure minimal disturbance?

Is there enough space in the classroom to support free movement and play?

Are all toys and equipment clean and in working order, with no missing pieces?

Are hand soap and tissue paper available in the washroom?

Are art materials available on open shelves for easy access?

Is the easel well stocked with paper, paint, and brushes?

Do you have the space and a variety of building blocks for multiple kids to play together?

Does the classroom have items like dolls, doll clothes, accessories, a pretend phone, and a kids’ shopping cart to support dramatic play?

Do kids have access to natural items like shells, acorns, rocks, etc.?

Does the classroom have a supply of science-based toys like magnifying glasses, binoculars, kaleidoscopes, etc.?

Do children have access to literature props in learning centers like writing pads, charts, picture cards, etc.?

Wrapping up,

Young children have curious minds and are eager to take in new experiences and learn new things. Providing them with the right learning environment is crucial to ensuring they get the optimal stimulation required to keep their minds engaged and help them learn.

As preschool teachers have the responsibility of nurturing the youngest minds in the community, well-designed checklists can help them ensure no aspect of early childhood education is overlooked. They also serve as valuable tools for teachers to monitor the progress and development of their students throughout the school year.

So, go ahead and use our checklists to make sure your little learners are having an awesome learning experience and getting the most out of their time in preschool.

Have you ever noticed a student struggling to remember things or raising their hand to give an answer but suddenly forgetting what they were about to say? Traits like these are common in students whose working memory is not as strong as it should be. Consequently, these students face many problems that get in the way of their academic performance.

Teachers often have strategies at their disposal to help students with working memory difficulties. But before they can implement these strategies, it is important for them to identify students who are actually struggling in this area. Knowing which of their students needs more help can better equip teachers to provide the support these students need.

One of the easiest ways to know if a child has issues with working memory is to use a working memory checklist. This simple tool can help teachers identify students who are in the risk zone and can benefit from further evaluation and intervention. While schools can curate their own checklist for this purpose, we have created an in-depth working memory checklist in this blog post to make the job of our teachers a little less demanding.

Working memory: what is it, and why is it important?

Our brain has two types of memory: long-term and short-term. One part of short-term memory is known as working memory. It is a special kind of memory that allows a person to hold bits of information for a short duration and process them to complete a task at hand. It is one of the executive functions of our brain that makes it easy for us to work with a set of information by sustaining our concentration and helping us stay committed to the task without losing track.

Working memory is a vital cognitive skill that helps us process information efficiently. It serves as a temporary storage place where we keep the information we need to reason, problem-solve, and make decisions. It helps us create a mental to-do list so we don’t go about doing tasks randomly but accomplish them in a logical sequence. Without a strong working memory, even simple everyday tasks like remembering grocery lists or directions can be challenging.

Use of working memory in the classroom

“Working memory plays a key role in supporting children’s learning over the school years, and beyond this into adulthood.”

Says a study[1] on ‘How does working memory work in the classroom?’

Hence, a good working memory is a key requirement to support learning and is required for most activities going on in the classroom. It allows students to learn to read, solve math problems, pay attention to the concepts being taught, remember instructions given by the teacher, and more. It also plays a role in storing information in long-term memory, which is the main aim of teaching, so that students can learn and accumulate knowledge for future use.

As working memory has a limited capacity and this capacity varies among individuals, it is possible to find some students struggling with tasks requiring the use of working memory. It is important for teachers to remember that this memory develops with time and practice. So, if some students in class struggle with holding and manipulating information, they may need more time to develop it. What teachers can do at this point is remain patient and help struggling students build their working memory.

But before that, teachers should take some time to evaluate students for working memory deficits, and if required, for other executive functioning skills as well. This can be accomplished by using an executive functioning skills checklist and a working memory checklist like the one we have prepared for you.

Working memory checklist: An evaluative tool for teachers

As working memory varies among individuals, teachers can use a checklist to evaluate the working memory abilities of their students. This checklist does not confirm if a child has difficulties with working memory but helps identify those who might have a working memory deficit. Based on the observations made through this checklist, teachers can call for further assessments to confirm if a student is really struggling with working memory difficulties.

Below are some points to include in a checklist evaluating the working memory of students:

1. Do you notice a lack of confidence in the child?

2. Does the child struggle with organizing tasks?

3. Does the student display poor attention to detail?

4. Do you often find the child daydreaming in the classroom?

5. Does the student seem inattentive when a lesson is being taught in the class?

6. Is the child easily distracted or appears fidgety during classroom activities?

7. Does the child struggle with remembering and processing information?

8. Do you see the child turning impatient when waiting for their turn to speak?

9. Can the student consistently remember math facts?

10. Do you find the child losing belongings very often?

11. Have you noticed instances where the child forgets what to say?

How to use our working memory checklist?

Here’s how you can use our free checklist to recognize which of your students are finding it tough to use their working memory effectively.

Download the PDF from the link provided and print out copies.

Observe your students during the class and take note of how they react when given a task, the difficulties they face, and how they overcome them.

Use a checklist for each student and record your observations.

Collate and evaluate the data received through the checklist to identify common challenges your students are facing and also the students who are struggling more than their peers to complete tasks requiring working memory.

If you find students having trouble with working memory, sit with them and set individual goals to help them improve. You can also devise strategies to support their learning.

Keep an eye out for improvement in the working memory of the child and alter your strategies as and when needed to achieve the desired progress.

Inform parents about the assessment and its results. You can suggest further evaluations to help parents confirm their child’s difficulties and take the next steps to help them overcome them.

What can teachers do to support students with working memory deficits?

A few strategies that you can employ as a teacher to help students with working memory difficulties are:

Ask students to repeat instructions to ensure they remember them and have understood them well.

Set routines so students know what to expect and have less new information to process.

Encourage partner activity so they can help each other when carrying out complex or multi-step tasks.

Limit the number of distractions in the classroom.

Allow the child to write or draw important pieces of information.

Teach students note-taking strategies to record important pieces of information.

Divide tasks into small steps and use simple language to explain each step to students.

Provide students with planning sheets so they can plan their work and have a visual reminder of what needs to be done.

Conduct working memory games and activities to help students build this cognitive skill.

In conclusion

Identifying working memory difficulties is the first step to helping students struggling with them. Failure to treat working memory challenges can result in poor academic progress, leading to reduced confidence and social isolation.

Therefore, teachers must be on the lookout for signs that could indicate a working memory deficit in children and use a checklist to assist them in evaluations. Timely identification and intervention can support struggling students and help them reach their full academic potential in school and beyond.

Words of appreciation go a long way in acknowledging people’s hard work and motivating them to continue to do their best work in the future. Teachers work tirelessly each day to provide quality education to their students. Unlike other professionals who don’t need to carry work home, teachers often give up their family time to plan and prepare for next-day activities.

While parents and students get the opportunity to show their gratitude by using creative ideas during Teacher Appreciation Week every year, receiving a special note from the principal has its own importance. Being appreciated for their hard work and unfaltering dedication boosts the morale of educators and makes them feel valued and cared for.

If you are a principal looking to appreciate your team of dedicated teachers for their immense contribution to the field of education, here are some short and sweet notes you can use as-is or draw inspiration from to write your own.

Heartfelt words of appreciation for teachers from the principal

1.

Dear [Teacher’s Name],

I have seen your immense dedication to nurturing young minds in our school. I just wanted you to know that this attribute of yours is truly admirable. I look forward to your future contributions to making our school a happy and enriching place for our students. Thank you!

2.

Dear Teacher,

Your unwavering commitment to education shines through every day. I am fortunate to have you on my team as we work together to provide the best educational experiences for our students.

3.

Miss [Teacher’s Name]

You have undoubtedly become the heart and soul of our school through all these years of teaching. Your efforts in guiding our students toward excellence have never gone unnoticed. So today, I want to take this opportunity to tell you that our school is lucky to have you, and I appreciate you for all your hard work!

4.

Hello Miss [Name],

I have seen your work over the last year. Your passion for teaching is infectious!
Dear [Teacher’s Name],

I see how beautifully you have organized your classroom for the upcoming school year. Thank you for your efforts in creating a welcoming, safe, and nurturing environment where students can learn and thrive. Your role in shaping the future of our students is much appreciated.
Dear Miss [Name],

I wanted to take a moment to appreciate your patience and understanding when interacting with students. I know how difficult it can be to manage certain student behaviors. But you have time and again proven that there is always a gentler way to support students. And that’s what makes you an exceptional educator.

7.

Hi [Teacher’s Name],

Concluding thoughts

A powerful quote about teachers changing lives says :
“A good teacher is like a candle – it consumes itself to light the way for others.” – Mustafa Kemal Ataturk

Therefore, it is important that everyone who is a part of the school community, including students, parents, and the principal, take time out to recognize and appreciate their teachers. Their efforts in inspiring students and shaping their futures should never go unnoticed. As the leader of a school, the principal has the power to create a positive and stimulating learning environment for students. And this is possible only when the teachers come to school with a positive mindset and share the same positivity with their students.

So, don’t wait for a special occasion to appreciate your teachers. A random note of appreciation from the principal will never fail to bring a smile to their faces and make their efforts worthwhile.
