While debt may seem simple, it can be a fairly complex concept to understand even for us adults. Therefore, teaching debt to students requires more than just a few lectures in class. Interestingly, topic-based financial literacy activities help a lot in strengthening student knowledge. Activities provide hands-on learning and encourage students to think and analyze critically.

In this post, we have shared some interesting debt activities for your students to indulge in so they can gain a solid understanding of this tricky financial concept.

Debt activities to help students understand various debt concepts

In this section, you will find ten activities to help your students master debt concepts. Let’s have a look at them in detail. 

1. Crack the Code with Debt Bingo

The first fun activity for reinforcing different debt concepts is Debt Bingo. You can either create a debt bingo by including debt-related vocabulary and taking their printouts or give students blank Bingo sheets so they can fill in all the debt vocabulary they have learned till date.

When your students are ready with their sheets, don’t call out words included in debt vocabulary. Rather, read out their definitions, one at a time. Your students will have to identify the word through its definition and then mark it on the sheet. Continue the activity and distribute rewards to winners.

2. How to Get Out of Debt?

Conduct this simple yet effective activity wherein students make individual flowcharts to show what steps they would take in case they find themselves trapped in debt. It would be better if you discuss the topic before conducting this activity so your students have some idea on how to go about it.

Look for steps like accessing debt amounts, finding details, making a repayment plan, etc. in your students’ work. Reward students with the best flowcharts and discuss their work with other students in your class.

3. Dealing with a Debt Collector

A debt collector is a person or collection agency that comes into the picture when one fails to pay off debt on time. While most individuals make it a point to repay their debts within the stipulated time, situations like job loss may make debt repayment difficult. One must therefore be aware of their rights and how to deal with a debt collector.

Help your students practice dealing with debt collectors by conducting a partner activity. Ask one student to take up the role of borrower while the other student becomes a debt collector. Give them a scenario so they can demonstrate how they will handle the situation.

For example, the collector makes initial contact, provides written notice, negotiates a settlement, and takes legal action if required. On the other hand, the borrower displays the right approach to handling the debt collector. For instance, confirming the legitimacy of the debt collector, asking for details and proof of debt, understanding their rights, and working on a repayment plan after confirming the debt.

4. What Would You Do?

This activity involves asking “What Would You Do?” questions. Write one question on one Q card and prepare as many cards as the total number of students in your class. Place the cards in a bowl and give them a nice mix. Invite your students to pick one card from the bowl and brainstorm their answer for 10-15 minutes. Then, call them forward, one at a time, to share their question and answer with the entire class. Some questions you could include are:

1. What would you do if you lost your job and couldn’t make your monthly debt payments?
2. What would you do if you were offered a loan with very high interest rates?
3. What would you do if a debt collector called you about a debt you don’t remember?
4. What would you do if your credit card balance kept increasing each month?
5. What would you do if a friend asked you to co-sign a loan they may not be able to repay?
6. What would you do if you had multiple debts and couldn’t afford to pay them all?
7. What would you do if your income increased—would you spend more or pay down debt?

5. Tell the Difference: Good or Bad Debt

Not all debts are bad. For this reason, students need to understand what makes a debt good or bad. Ideally, any debt that serves as an investment—for example, paying a mortgage to buy a house or taking a student loan to land a high-paying job in the future—is good debt. On the contrary, using credit cards for expensive vacations or dining in fancy restaurants are bad debt.

To help students understand and reinforce the difference, hand one red and one green card to every student in your class. Now, read out scenarios focusing on either good or bad debt and ask your students to display the green card if they think it is a good debt and the red card if the scenario talks about a bad debt.

After every scenario, share the correct answer and have students give one point to themselves for the right answer and none if their answer is wrong. In the end, let students count their total scores. You may now reward students with the highest scores if you want. This activity is also great for assessing how well your students have understood the concept of good and bad debt.

6. How Much Student Debt Can You Afford?

An activity like this one can help students analyze if their career choice is good enough to help them pay off their student loan after graduation.

For this activity, create a hypothetical scenario including details like:

• Amount of student loan offered (say, $27,000),
• Monthly loan payment (say, $300)
• Budget allocation for loan repayment (say, 10% of monthly income)

Ask students to write down their top 3 career choices and their starting gross annual incomes. Now, let them calculate their gross monthly income and the value of budget allocation for each career choice.

Ideally, if the budget allocation for loan repayment is higher than the amount that must be paid every month, the career choice will be a good fit in terms of student loan affordability.

Through this activity, students can figure out how much student debt they can afford and which career will help them repay their debt easily without causing a financial burden in the future.

7. Poster Making: Secured vs. Unsecured Debt

Debt is divided into two categories – secured and unsecured debt. Help your students understand the differences by asking them to make a poster on this topic. Ask them to highlight how the two categories are different from one another using their research and creative skills.

They can also include a few examples of secured (mortgages, auto loans, etc.) and unsecured (credit cards, personal loans, etc.) debt to display their understanding on the subject.

8. Out of Control Debt

When students know what can lead them to a pool of unmanageable debt, they are more likely to stay away from such practices. Therefore, conduct an activity wherein your students make a presentation on 5-8 things that might lead them to out-of-control debt.

You can divide your class into pairs or groups of 4–5 students for this activity. Students can then share the presentation in class and talk about why and how the things they have pointed out lead to the accumulation of excessive debt.

9. Calculating Debt Ratios

A debt ratio is a simple metric that indicates a person’s financial situation. A person with a lower debt ratio is more financially stable than someone with a higher debt ratio. Understanding the meaning of this metric can support students in determining their financial stability and serve as a guide for financial planning and debt management.

For this activity, prepare 5–6 scenarios that students can ponder upon to calculate debt ratios. When your students finish calculating the ratios, review their answers and invite students to share their thoughts on why certain scenarios result in higher debt ratios and what can be done to improve the financial situation. You may also talk about how this metric can help students use their credit wisely.

10. Debt Repayment Strategies

Learning effective strategies to pay off debt can help students manage their debts effectively. The three most popular strategies to pay down debt are the Snowball Method, Debt Avalanche, and Debt Consolidation.

Divide your class into groups and assign one strategy to every group. Ask your students to research and find as much information as possible related to the strategy in a week.

Have them prepare a presentation, an illustration, a chart, or anything they feel appropriate to help them present the information they have gathered. Pick one day and invite groups to share their knowledge with other students.

In current times, borrowing money to cover big expenses like buying a home or college tuition is quite common. People who get into debt without understanding its nuances often get into financial trouble. To prevent such mishaps, students must understand the benefits and risks of taking debt. • The game will go on similarly with one less chair than total kids every time. The child who remains in the game till the last will win.

Indoor hopscotch is a famous and easy game that makes the evenings more fun and memorable. Indoor hopscotch provides several benefits such as motor coordination, balance, and improved flexibility. This game can be played solo or in group.

• Tape

• Small stone 

How to play?

• First, kids have to make hopscotch in some free space in their homes. They can draw it using chalk or tape. 
• Simply, draw box lines in a single line vertically. Mark 1, 2, and 3 in the initial first boxes, 4 and 5 in one box, side by side, 6 in a single next box, 7 and 8 again side by side, and the last 9 in a single box. Ensure to mark each box.
• Now, using a stone, first, throw it in box no 1, jump over there, pick the stone, throw it to box 2, jump there, pick the stone, throw it to box 3, jump there, and so on. 
• Complete it till 9 then come back to the starting point in the same manner. 
• If your stone lands in the wrong box or out of boundary or the player uses both legs instead of one, he/she will be out of the game and have to restart.

The perfect game to play on those cozy winter days when all your kid wants to do is lay around comfortably and enjoy the day. The presence of one player is enough for the game, however, the more the merrier. A great activity to develop motor coordination skills of your kids and categorical learning while they put material in a specific manner to retain the castle. 

Material required: 

• Old cardboard boxes, pillows, blankets, chairs, tables, etc. 

How to play? 

• The game is simple. Here, your kid has to build a castle or a tower using the waste cardboard, pillows, blankets, or anything that can strengthen the castle. 
• The game can be played between the kid and the parent or among kids. Whoever’s tower will be the longest and the strongest will win.
• Later, you can let your kid spend the day in their castle and have their snacks. 

6. Obstacle course 

A wonderful game that not only keeps the children engaged and thrilled but also aids in the development of kids. The game helps improve the balance, attention, spatial awareness, and mobility of developing toddlers. This game can be played solo or in group.

• If the kid touches any obstacle even slightly, he/ she has to restart the game.

How to play?

• One of the players who will facilitate the game, preferably parents, will have to mark one of the empty spaces as the starting point and the other as the endpoint. You can do it across rooms or in the house to make it more challenging. 
• The green light is the signal for a go and the red light is the signal for a stop. 
• If the green light is turned on, kids can run from one hiding stop to another. If a red light is turned on, kids can’t move. They have to freeze in there. 
• If any player is found to be moving when the red light is on they will be out of the game and have to restart. 

8. DIY Games

How to play?

• One of the people, preferably a parent, will act as Simon. Simon has to give commands or orders to the players and will ask them to do random things, such as stand on one leg, recite a poem, tell the meaning of certain words, revolve in a circle five times, and so on. 
• Kids have to perform these actions when the command is followed by the words Simon says. Any command without these words is not to be followed. 
• If kids act on a command without these words, they will be out of the game. The last one standing in the game will win. 

10. Balancing Beam 

Balancing Beam is surely a kid’s favorite and easy-to-play game with numerous benefits. It will keep your child engaged for a long period and this can be played solo. An entertaining game to improve the motor coordination of kids and improve balancing skills.

• Stick the tapes on a floor in a random manner but ensure that the tapes are connected and are easy to walk on.

• Stack of dominoes 
• Any items of equal size and normal weight. 

How to play? 

• Kids have to stack the domino pieces in a row one after the other. Ensure that each two pieces has neither too much distance between them nor too little. 
• Once kids have completed stacking their pieces, they have to lightly push the first piece and enjoy viewing others falling successively. 

12. The Listening Games 

The Listening Game is the perfect amalgam of fun, creativity, and learning. This game is amusing and full of thrill to keep children guessing what’s next. Additionally,  it is a perfect game to improve the auditory skills of the kids along with their recognition skills. The game can be played using a single player or more than one player.

• Among the two players, one (preferably the parent) will hold the can or a bucket with its mouth side to the other player. 
• The other player has to toss the coin or the sock in the mouth of the can or bucket, respectively. 
• If the coin or sock lands inside the can or bucket the maximum number of times, the kid will win. 
• Alternatively, you can have coins or some food items placed on a table. Kids have to throw a hoop around the placed item. If the kid successfully lands the hoop around the object, the kid wins and the placed object will be won by the kid.

A simple yet creative game that will engage and amuse kids. It will help improve the balance and hand-motor coordination of kids. Additionally, visual-spatial awareness and improved mobility are other benefits of these games.

Colorful rainbow craft to captivate and enrich young minds

Things you’ll need:

1. A4-size paper (beige, white, and green)
2. Colorful markers
3. Ruler
4. Glue
5. Pencil
6. Scissor (Disclaimer: Adult supervision is required as a pair of scissors is a sharp tool. Please be vigilant.)

Steps to make the craft:

Take an A4-size sheet in white or beige color and tear it in half. Use another sheet to make similar halves. You will now have four half sheets, of which you’ll need only three halves for the rainbow craft. 

Use a ruler and a pencil to make half-inch markings close to the margin of the paper. 

Now, draw lines at these points using colorful markers. Make sure you follow the rainbow sequence of colors (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet). 

Make two sets of rainbow-colored lines on each piece of paper. 

Fill individual colors in the spaces created on both sides of the paper. Let it dry for some time so the color does not smudge off. 

Now, let’s work on folding the paper. Fold the paper in half to make a crease in the middle.

Now open the paper and fold it to the middle crease. Make another fold on top of this one. 

Open the paper, and you will notice an array of creases on one side. 

Start making similar folds on the other side of the paper as well.

Open the folds on both sides of the paper, and you will see a paper with creases, as shown above. 

Next, fold the paper, beginning at the first crease. Alternate the side of the paper by revealing the colored side and making the second fold. 

Again, switch to the opposite side of the paper and make another fold. Continue the process until you have folded the paper at all creases. You will have a thin strip of folded paper with two distinct sections of rainbow colors on each side. 

Finish off the folding spree by making the last fold in the middle of the paper strip to obtain a winged structure like this. 

Prepare the other two halves of paper you had cut out earlier in a similar manner. You will now have three rainbow paper wings to work with. 

Take one of these pieces and apply glue to attach it to the center. Repeat this with other pieces as well. 

In the next step, use glue to join the three individual rainbow pieces together. 

Upon completion, you will have the final piece that opens wide like a paper fan. 

It’s now time to make the sticks to hold the rainbow fan in place. Take a green A4-sized sheet and tear it in half. 

Make the middle crease by folding it in half, as we have done previously. Open the paper and fold it on one side till the middle crease. 

Fold the other side as well. 

Make the next fold on both sides of the middle crease to obtain another thin strip of green paper. 

This is what it will look like. 

Apply glue to one side of the strip, and gently fold the other side over it. Apply firm pressure so the fold doesn’t open up. 

Use the other half of the green sheet to make two similar strips. 

Let’s add a little art to the rainbow fan by making a cloud and the sun peeping at one corner. Draw this on the white sheet and cut it out with a pair of scissors. 

Add a hint of color and facial expressions to the cloud and the sun to make them look cute and appealing. 

Attach the green strips to the rainbow fan by applying some glue to one end of the strips and fixing them on both ends of the fan. 

Your rainbow fan is now ready! You can open and close it to see if it is working fine. 

To add the cloud and sun trinket, simply glue a small paper square on one side of the top portion of the closed fan.

Upon opening, you will have a small portion of the square paper sticking out of the fan.

Put some glue on this small bit of paper and stick the cloud on it. This way, your cloud won’t fall off when you open or close your rainbow fan. 

And now your craft is ready! Looks amazing! Right?

Extension activities to go with the rainbow craft

1. Provide seven paper strips of rainbow colors to each kid and have them arrange them in the right order, as seen in a rainbow. Allow them to take the strips home for further practice. 
2. Arrange transparent sheets of primary colors and have the kids observe them against the light. When held individually, kids will see only the primary colors. However, when two sheets of primary colors are held one above the other and seen against the light, kids will notice a secondary color on the sheet.

In this activity, divide students into teams of 2 members each. They need to pick a case study of failures faced by famous personalities that also lead to success later. Rowling who struggled throughout her life and then wrote Harry Potter, a novel series, leading to success.

3. SW Challenge

A growth mindset can only be developed when students are aware of themselves. For this activity, students need to critically think and then begin. Give a sheet of paper to all students and ask them to make two boxes. 

One box should be titled Strengths while the other should be titled Weaknesses. Once done, they should read them aloud and other students are free to offer solutions. To develop a growth mindset, students need to learn the importance of working in teams. When they work in teams, they are likely to face criticism, unmatched opinions, and a few problems. Such circumstances help them arrive at solutions while working with people.

For this activity, make a presentation of products that are not very useful in the market. You may simply find unhelpful inventions on the internet and paste those pictures into the audio-visual presentation. Invite each student to sell this product to a classmate. Such an activity promotes an active learning mindset which not only helps them grow but also makes them problem-solvers. This will help them think of a product in a way that makes it a more useful and helpful product increasing its sales and demand in the market. The same goes for the growth mindset which calls for a positive outlook in any negative or demotivating situation.

9. 21-Day Challenge

For this activity, ask students about their areas of interest which could include painting, poem writing, exercising, or even if it is a sport. Whatever students choose, they need to consistently indulge in that activity for 21 days and share their experience on the 21st day. 

For example, if a student chooses to journal, he/she can present the journal for 21 days to the class. He/she needs to share the experience including how good or bad it was or what were the challenges faced and how he/she overcame those, etc. Also, They need to reflect on the challenges and how those difficulties were not a setback but actually helped them in their journey which is the core value to develop in the case of a growth mindset.

10. Appreciation Box

While it seems underrated, appreciating others requires confidence and the ability to see others as a source of inspiration. When students acquire the willingness to see something better in others, they learn to embrace differences and accept them. For this activity, give students a square cutout of paper and other student’s names. Make sure the names of all students are mentioned on the different papers. Now, distribute the papers randomly and students need to write something nice about the student whose name is mentioned on the paper. Once done, read out everything in front of the class and let everyone embrace their unique qualities. It also helps promote diversity of thoughts and acceptance in students.

Prepare a quiz and distribute this paper to both teams. The teams are supposed to brainstorm and find solutions for all questions. These questions can include scenarios, multiple choice, or even short answers. The team that completes the quiz first with the maximum number of correct answers wins the game. 

3. What’s your Excuse?

At times, peer pressure could be simple things like sneaking out or bunking a class. While this is not categorized as something very harmful, it still is peer pressure for students who do not want to indulge in it. For this game, students need to be super creative and think of the best excuses.

To begin with the game, read aloud any peer pressure scenario. Now, divide students into teams of 3 members each. Two teams compete with each other. Present the scenario and each team thinks of different yet creative excuses. Let the other students decide which team gives the best excuses. The one with the best excuses wins the game.

4. Role Play

When students understand peer pressure by stepping into such situations, they are more likely to decode the essential steps to be taken in such cases. This activity focuses on teaching students how to handle peer pressure without feeling guilty about not participating in it. For this activity, divide students into teams. 

Now, write such situations that constitute peer pressure like forcing someone to smoke or bullying someone online. Assign a topic to each team and they need to showcase the scene by playing roles. Other students in the class can share their feedback, personal experiences, or solutions after the act. 

5. Observe your actions

In today’s era of pervasive technology and social media, getting influenced by others is very common in teenagers. However, getting influenced by peers is much more evident. Students sometimes find themselves compelled to engage in certain activities just to show off and look superior, regardless of whether these activities align with their best interests.

Another facet of this scenario entails that students might also be aware of the activities that are wrong but feel pressured to partake in them or willingly choose to do so. Now this calls for making them aware of the right actions to take and letting them know that they can talk to their parents, teachers, or guardians in any such situation.

To carry out the activity, ask students to observe their day carefully in terms of what they’re doing in school or anywhere they are. Then they need to carefully think if any such activity they’re enrolling under any kind of pressure. Students have to make a note of it. Instruct them to think of answers to certain questions which can be;

What is the activity? 
What do you think, is it right or wrong from any context/perspective?
Are you doing it under any kind of pressure or is it your own choice?
If you feel you’ve been pressured for the same, are you still interested in doing so?
If you’re interested, then what it is that is stopping you from going ahead?

Students just have to note such instances in slips without mentioning their names. Teachers can then collect them and choose a day to read these anonymous slips in front of students for which other students and teachers can share their insights. This might help that particular child to know more about the same. If he/she still feels confused then they can approach the teacher or counselor for the same.

Often, students may find it difficult to open up and share their thoughts or concerns with others. This activity aims to provide students with a safe space to freely discuss any matter that’s on their minds, without any fear of judgment or hesitation. In doing so, teachers will have the opportunity to gain deeper insights into their students’ lives, enabling them to explore ways to offer comprehensive support and assistance.

6. Poster Making 

Providing creative freedom is one of the ways to empower students to voice their opinions. Sometimes, all it needs is a unique way of expression to let students understand themselves and others better. For this activity, give a large sheet of paper to high schoolers and direct them to make a poster.

In this activity, students can sketch, draw, or paint their ideas related to peer pressure. They may also use different quotes or sayings to highlight their perspectives. Once the posters are made, allow students to explain their concepts to everyone in the class. For example, they may talk about cyberbullying, cultural diversity, or discrimination among students. 

7. The 3 Choices 

Acts of peer pressure are not a thoughtful process. Such situations generally occur all of a sudden and students certainly do not get time to process everything. Hence, this activity helps high schoolers make wise decisions whenever they face different acts of peer pressure from their fellow mates.

For this activity, make three different flashcards – IGNORE, SPEAK UP, and SAY NO. Place these cards on a table and present a situation that involves peer pressure. After this, invite each student to choose any of the choices. They need to explain their choice and let other students learn different ways to tackle peer pressure. Problem-solving activities like this one help high schoolers become better decision-makers. 

8. Impromptu Speech

Peer pressure is a broad concept and high schoolers sure need to discover the various aspects of it. Some acts of peer pressure can be negative while some can also be positive. In this case, this activity helps students express their views in a quick manner thereby enhancing their critical thinking skills. 

For this activity, write different topics that involve peer pressure and put them in the jar. Now, each student selects a topic from the jar and gets 2 minutes of preparation. They may share their experiences, any incidents they might have read about, or even ways to prevent it. Since it is impromptu, there’s no wrong or right. Mix the material of all children in the group and ask them to form the sets from that material. The waste material could be discarded pencils, colors, newspapers, pens, etc. 

The group that will make the maximum number of sets in less time will win. Further, the teacher can put up questions regarding the formed set to assess the kid’s knowledge. 

2. Venn Diagram Activity 

It is a fun Venn Diagram activity that will help children understand sets and Venn diagrams. For this activity, educators need to make some chits on which some questions are written. Ensure answers to these questions fall only into two broad ranges. And some can fall into both. For instance, answers will lead to the names of fruits and vegetables or movie names and song names.

Now, you can draw a big Venn Diagram on the floor. Ask kids to pick the chits, answer the question, and stand in the area appropriate for the answer. Some kids will receive common answers so they will be standing in the overlapping area. 

It is a great activity to show visual representation of sets to the kids. Additionally, educators can ask questions to children about their positions and related to sets in general.

The Card Sorting Game is another wonderful activity that focuses on arranging elements in their respective area. For this activity, all you need is a deck of cards with some pictures on it. Pictures could be of shapes, fruits, vegetables, etc. You can either purchase a deck with such images or make one for yourself.  

Now, ask the children to draw the cards one by one and place them in their respective areas. You can again make Venn Diagrams or simply stack them on the table. To further strengthen the kid’s knowledge about sets, educators can ask them questions.

4. Set through Storytelling 

Storytelling activities are not only a great tool to improve reading comprehension, vocabulary, and other related skills, rather they could also be used to teach some math concepts. Set through Storytelling is a fun activity that will keep children engaged and will provide greater clarity of the concept sets. 

For the implementation of the activity, you need a story. As an educator, you can make up a story of your own or choose an existing one. Ensure, your chosen story has various elements that can be grouped. Now, narrate the story to the children. Remember to emphasize every key detail and the elements. 

Now, once you have narrated the story, ask the children to find the common elements from the story and note them down. The child who finds the maximum number of correct elements grouped to form a set will win. 

5. Set Scavenger Hunt 

Set Scavenger Hunt activity is a great outdoor activity that will keep children physically fit and their knowledge of sets clear. There is no material required for this activity, students can use the things already present in the outdoor field. 

In this activity, students will hunt different objects and then will place them under similar categories. Plan a scavenger hunt for children and ask them to find different things and categorize them. Categories could be colors, shapes, man-made vs. natural, living vs. non-living, etc. 

Teachers can make a group of 3-5 students for this activity and set a timer, for instance, let’s say for 30 minutes. In 30 minutes, whichever group made the maximum number of accurate sets will win. 

6. Set Puzzles 

In the Set Puzzles activity, all you need is a simple puzzle or a board game and some set-related questions, such as making a set of prime numbers to 20 or writing all the numbers divisible by 2. This activity can be played by 3-5 students in one run. 

Once you have your puzzle board and questions ready, ask students to roll the dice. The students will then be asked one set-related question. If the student gets the answer right, he/she is allowed to move in the board and if the student is unable to get the answer right, he/she won’t move forward in the board. Hence, to win the game, kids need to get the maximum number of answers correct. 

7. Set through Arts 

Another fun and creative set activity is Set through Arts. This activity can be done in many ways. For instance, educators can simply ask students to bring their artwork to the class and organize it according to some chosen criteria. The criteria could be the form of paintings, such as mandalas, doodlings, etc., or based on coloring, such as watercolors, pencil sketches, etc. 

Another way to carry out this activity in the classroom is by asking students to draw something. It’s up to kids what they want to draw and how they want to draw. Once they are done with their drawings, ask them to categorize the drawings of the whole class based on some criteria. We can have similar criteria here, which are forms of painting or coloring. It is a unique way to teach kids the concept of sets. 

8. Set Relay Race 

A Set Relay Race is a great outdoor activity that will help reinforce the concept of sets in kids effectively. For this activity, you need a relay race area, where barriers are in terms of some objects. In other words, educators will set the barriers or objects based on some categories. Students have to collect the objects and sort the objects based on the criteria and then whoever students will finish the race first will win. 

This activity can be implemented in many ways. Such as, students can either first collect all the objects, complete the race, and then sort the objects. Whoever will do this first will win. On the other hand, students can collect an object, sort it based on its category, then collect a second object, sort it, and so on. Whichever student will complete the race in this manner will win. 

Concluding thoughts 

Set theory is crucial to keep mathematical elements and numbers organized and sorted. Without sets in mathematics, we would have jumbled and unorganized numbers whose analysis and interpretation would have been nothing short of a challenge. Hence, these set games and activities are a fun way to learn a highly crucial mathematical concept.

Beginning from the potential and kinetic energies, and covering solar energy, chemical energy, elastic energy, heat energy, and various others, this post will cover some amazing classroom energy activities that will allow students to unleash their hidden scientists and discover the world of physics and mechanics. 

Energy activities for elementary school students 

Physics games and activities are a great way to pique the kid’s curiosity about boring textbook concepts. These activities provide students with hands-on experience and greater clarity of the concepts and make their practical understanding lenient. Some amazing energy activities for elementary school students are- 

1. Catapult using sticks 

Catapult using sticks is an easy yet efficient classroom activity based on potential energy. This activity can be done in a classroom or even in an open space. 

Material required:
Rubber bands, ice-cream sticks, bottle cap, glue, and a cotton ball

Instructions: 

• Take 5 to 7 ice cream sticks and pile them up. Use a rubber band to secure the sticks from both ends. 
• Take another ice cream stick and put it perpendicular to one side of the piled-up sticks. Repeat it on the other side. Tie both the sticks using a rubber band. Ensure the rubber band is tied up tightly and make an X in between. 
• Now, secure one end of the perpendicular sticks using a rubber band. 
• Using glue, paste the bottle cap on the open side of the sticks, that is the end that is not tied. Ensure the hollow of the bottle cap is facing upward. 
• Now put a cotton ball in the bottle cap. Your catapult is ready to fire! Simply press the stick downward on which the bottle cap is secured and leave it once you have pushed it down enough. See how far the cotton ball goes. 

Thoughts for the brain!! 

Ask kids when the potential energy is converted into kinetic energy and how they can calculate the potential energy. Also, will it make any difference if the stick is pushed downward too much or too little? 

2. Flying Airplanes using Elastics

Let’s bring a power of elastic energy to our regular paper planes. A simple activity that covers the concept of elastic energy in a fun manner. This activity can be best performed in an open space. 

Material required:
Origami papers, waster cardboard, rubber band 

Instructions:

• Using waste cardboard, make an airplane launcher or simply a ramp. 
• Secure the sides of a ramp or the launcher with cardboard and fix a rubber band on the sides of the ramp. The rubber should be tight enough to produce a great amount of elastic energy. 
• Now, make your regular origami plane and fix a hook at the nose of the plane. 
• Let students use the hook and the rubber band to catapult the plane and fly it away as far as possible. The student whose plane will go the farthest will win. 

Thoughts for the brain!!

Ask students if the tightness of the rubber band matters, or if the loosely held rubber band would have the same effect. Why or why not? Further, encourage students to compare how far the plane will go using only hands or the elastic band. 

3. Roasting Marshmallows using Solar Ovens 

An interesting activity to bring the power of solar energy straight to the classrooms. Students can make their solar oven in the classroom and go into the sunlight for the practical part. 

Material required:
Pizza box, aluminum foil, duct tape, plastic wraps

Instructions: 

• Take a pizza box and make a slightly wide border on the lid. 
• Cut the border from three sides and leave the hinge end uncut. You will get the flap on the lid of the pizza box. 
• Now cover the inside of the flap with aluminum foil. Also, cover the inside of the base of the pizza box with aluminum foil. 
•  Secure the plastic wrap on the sides of the lid (border) using duct tape. By this stage, you will have three layers in your pizza box. First, the flap on the lid is covered by aluminum foil, second, the borders of the lids are secured by plastic wrap, and the third base of the pizza box is covered with aluminum foil. 
• Now, again paste some black sheets above the foil on the base of the box.  
• Use a wooden stick to open the flap at 90 degrees from the lid. Your solar oven is ready. 
• Take a slice of cheese or a piece of marshmallow and a small sheet of foil. Put the food item on foil and keep it on the base of the box. 
• Cover the lid. Keep the model outside in the sun. wait for some time to have your cheese melted or marshmallow roasted.

4. Playing guitar using rubber bands 

A fun sound energy activity that can be performed in the classroom to teach kids the concept of vibrations and sound waves. 

Material required:
Tissue box or any other box with an opening on one side, rubber bands of different lengths and thickness, pencil

Instructions: 

• Take a tissue box and secure the rubber bands on it horizontally. Attach a cardboard pipe on the side of the tissue box to give it a guitar-like appearance. 
• Attach pencils on both sides of the opening of the box, under the rubber bands. 
• Pluck the rubber bands and enjoy your music. 

Thought for the brain!!

Why use rubber bands of different lengths and thickness? Is it the sound that causes vibrations or do vibrations lead to the production of sound? 

5. Playing basketball 

A wonderful activity to educate kids on how potential energy converts into kinetic energy using a simple basketball. 

Material required: 
Basketball, marker

Instructions: 

• Find a wall and mark the lines on it using a marker, starting from the floor and above as far as it goes. 
• Divide the kids into groups of 5-6 students each. 
• Let the student drop the ball from one marking and see will the ball bounce back to the same level or above it or below it. 

Thought for the brain!! 

What was the energy at the beginning when students were merely holding the ball? The initial energy changed to which energy? If a student again pushes the ball down, what energy is being utilized? 

6. Flying a Vinegar Rocket 

A thrilling activity to familiarize kids with chemical energy and mechanical energy. It can be done in an open field. 

Material required: 
Film canister, baking soda, water, vinegar

Instructions: 

• Take a film canister and add some fins to it to give it a rocket-like appearance. 
• Take ½ cup water and ½ cup vinegar and mix them in a measuring glass. 
• Fill the liquid in the canister. Ensure one end is tightly shut and the other can be shut easily like a lid. 
• Now add baking soda to the canister, drop the lid, and quickly move away from the canister. 
• Students will have first-hand experience on how chemical energy is converted into mechanical energy.

Thoughts for the brain!!

What happens when vinegar and baking soda combine? Which energy was released during their combination? 

7. Which spoon heats up first? 

A great activity to acquaint kids with the crux of heat energy and teach them how different metals react in the presence of heat. 

Material required:
Aluminum foil, paper, lit candle

Instructions: 

• Take aluminum foil and make a strip of it. Similarly, take paper and make a strip out of it. 
• Now take another paper strip and paste an aluminum strip on one side of it. 
• One by one bring the strips near the heat and observe how different metals react in the presence of heat. 

Thoughts for the brain: 

What causes paper to fold inwards whereas foil outwards? List some other metals and how they will react to the heat. 

8. How far do your marbles travel? 

Another fun and engaging activity to teach kids kinetic and potential energy and how it is used in different areas. It can be done in both the classroom and an open area. 

Material required:
Cardboard ramp, milk carton, marbles of different sizes, meter scale 

Instructions: 

• Place the ramp on the ground with a milk carton at the bottom of the ramp. Ensure the opening of the carton is towards the top of the ramp. 
• Place a meter scale beside the milk carton. 
• Let kids drop the marble of the smallest size down the ramp and identify how far it pushed the milk carton using a meter scale. 
• Repeat the process with marbles of different sizes. 

Thoughts for the brain!! 

Ask kids to identify which energies were in play during the whole process. What difference does the marble with more weight make in the generation of the kinetic energy?
