Every student is unique, with their own strengths, learning styles, and challenges. This uniqueness often requires extra support, attention, and care from teachers to help them thrive.

Teachers must address these individual needs by tailoring teaching methods to suit each student. Along with this, they must carefully choose their words when providing feedback through report card comments.

Report card comments are a vital way to share a student’s progress. These comments should highlight their strengths, celebrate accomplishments, and offer insights into areas for improvement with sensitivity.

For students with special needs, this feedback becomes even more important. It helps in recognizing their efforts, addressing challenges, and encouraging their continuous development.

Thoughtful and personalized feedback can inspire students to grow and guide parents on how to support them better. It also fosters a positive learning experience for the child.

To make this task easier for teachers, examples of report card comments can serve as a helpful guide. The following suggestions aim to reduce the stress of crafting meaningful and effective comments.

Here is a collection of 160 Report Card Comments for Students with Special Needs, designed to help teachers provide constructive, thoughtful, and supportive feedback.

Report card comments for students with special needs

In the following section of the article, you’ll find a list of examples of report card comments which are divided into certain categories based on the areas of concern for special needs students.

1. Academic progress:

This part will include feedback related to academic progress, achievements, and areas of improvement such as reading, writing, math, English, or any other subject.

“___________” actively engages in reading activities due to which the ability to recognize and sound out words has greatly improved. I strongly recommend applying context clues and making connections between the text and the prior knowledge in order to work on reading comprehension skills.

“___________” has shown significant improvement in reading comprehension skills, using various reading strategies to enhance his/her understanding. He/She accurately identifies the main idea of the text and is able to answer related questions. He/She can now focus on building and expanding vocabulary to further enhance comprehension skills.

“___________” has shown good progress in his/her writing skills. He/She tries to follow every punctuation and capitalization rule but still needs to work on organizing the thoughts and presenting them in a clear and concise manner. For this, I would recommend working on expanding vocabulary to clearly communicate the ideas in a proper sentence structure.

Though “___________” is now able to accurately recognize and solve a normal calculation, however, he/she still faces a challenge while approaching word problems. It would be beneficial if he/she engage in additional practice activities and seek assistance and clarification when needed.

“___________” is showing constant improvement in all the subjects except science. Being a practical subject, I would recommend making use of visual aids such as videos and images to make the complex topics easy to understand. With targeted intervention, practice, and support, he/she will be able to overcome these challenges and make remarkable progress.

“_______” has shown a significant improvement in academics this year. Her/His hard work and the desire to excel have paid off!

“_______” develops a clear understanding of lessons. However, she/he finds it difficult to put them down on paper because of her/his slow writing speed. Providing more opportunities to practice writing skills using appropriate strategies at home and in school can help her/him make progress in this area.

Despite challenges, “_______” puts her/his best efforts into subjects like _____ and _____. She/He may take her/his time, but will definitely do well with consistency and hard work.

“_______” is always eager to try new approaches and learning strategies to help her/him learn better. This has brought significant improvements in language and math. Her/His assessment scores are a testament to it. Keep up the good work!

I am proud to be “_______’s” teacher this year. She/He is an enthusiastic learner who, despite her/his limitations, has an immense love for academics. She/He is doing great in most areas but needs to put a little more effort into _____ and _____.

“________” has shown remarkable improvement in mathematics through consistent practice and a positive attitude toward learning. Continued focus on solving real-life problems will further strengthen these skills.

“________” demonstrates a growing ability to organize thoughts and express ideas clearly in written assignments, and I encourage using graphic organizers to enhance clarity.

“________” actively participates in science experiments, which helps in better understanding of the concepts. Hands-on activities should remain a key part of the learning process.

“________” is improving in spelling and vocabulary through regular practice and enjoys learning new words. Daily word challenges could further boost progress.

“________” is making strides in handwriting and presentation skills, showing greater attention to detail. Continued practice with guided writing prompts will be beneficial.

“________” is showing progress in decoding words during reading sessions. Emphasizing phonics games at home could solidify these skills.

“________” has developed an interest in creative writing, crafting thoughtful and imaginative stories. Encouraging journaling could further enhance this talent.

“________” has been proactive in asking questions during math lessons, which has led to improved problem-solving abilities. Further support with mental math could enhance quick calculations.

“________” is beginning to demonstrate an understanding of historical concepts and can link them to present-day events. Continuing discussions at home on related topics could reinforce learning.

“________” enjoys learning through interactive methods such as educational apps, which have enhanced comprehension in science and math topics.

While “___________” is working on improving his/her communication abilities, he/she faces difficulty in organizing the thoughts and expressing them concisely. By practicing summarizing information and using simple and clear sentences, he/she can overcome challenges and make progress.

“_______” is improving her/his verbal communication skills with each passing day. However, she/he still struggles with non-verbal communication, which includes understanding facial expressions, gestures, and body language. We are working patiently to help her/him improve these skills too.

I am happy to share that “_______’s” ability to initiate and maintain conversations has improved drastically over the school year. I have noticed her/him talking to her/his peers, and she/he is doing great!

“________” demonstrates creativity in sharing ideas during show-and-tell sessions. Providing platforms for sharing personal experiences can improve fluency.

“________” is learning to use a wider range of vocabulary when describing events. Daily word challenges at home could encourage further improvement.

“________” shows curiosity by asking thoughtful questions during lessons. Supporting this curiosity with open-ended questions can refine critical thinking.

“________” is improving in following multi-step directions and enjoys participating in team-building exercises. Practice with simple recipes or crafts can reinforce comprehension.

“________” is beginning to understand and use polite expressions like “please” and “thank you” in appropriate contexts. Continued modeling of these behaviors can solidify this habit.

“________” is starting to articulate feelings and needs effectively to peers and adults. Incorporating emotion charts at home can further develop this skill.

As students require special needs, they need to put extra effort into communicating the same to teachers and guardians. In order to acknowledge their struggle and progress made, teachers can check out the following examples.

“___________” is becoming more comfortable talking and expressing himself/herself in the class. He/She asks questions and guidance for more clarity. He/She is able to identify his/her needs and takes initiative in communicating the same. I encourage to keep practicing and with ongoing support and reinforcement, he/she will be able to improve self-advocacy skills.

“___________” has shown notable progress in developing self-advocacy skills. He/She tries to identify and express the needs and preferences to teachers and peers. He/She can further benefit by providing a supportive environment and additional support to encourage him/her to ask for help.

“___________” is consistently working towards improving self-advocacy skills. He/She has started advocating for his/her needs and preferences. Participating and engaging in class activities can further enhance the confidence to openly communicate the required support and accommodations. With constant practice and guidance, he/she can become independent and assertive.

While “___________” has shown improvement in expressing ideas and opinions, he/she still faces difficulty in advocating for himself/herself. By providing a supportive comfortable environment and constant positive reinforcement, he/she can improve his/her self-advocating abilities.

“___________” has started taking more initiative in seeking accommodations and additional support for academic difficulties. He/She is putting efforts into identifying the strengths and areas of difficulty improving self-awareness and self-expression. With consistent practice and support, he/she will be able to develop strong self-advocacy skills.

There is an improvement in “_______’s” self-advocacy skills. She/He is clear about her/his personal preferences and interests and knows how to communicate them with teachers and peers.

I can’t express how proud I was to see “_______” asserting her/his rights to access certain resources in the school library. The way she/he conveyed herself/himself deserves appreciation.

“_______” has strong self-advocacy skills. She/He never shies away from seeking help and asking for accommodations when needed. Way to go!

“_______” has a very gentle heart, but she/he needs to learn to speak up for herself/himself. By practicing self-advocacy, she/he can ensure that her/his needs are understood and met, and that she/he has equal opportunities to participate, learn, and succeed in various aspects of life.

We have been working on helping students build self-advocacy skills. “_______” still needs more opportunities to get better at this skill. Please support by modeling advocacy behaviors and engaging in role-playing to help her/him practice advocating for herself/himself in different situations.

“________” takes pride in advocating for their seating preference in the classroom, ensuring a productive learning environment. Boosting this confidence through positive reinforcement is beneficial.

“________” recognizes when assistance is needed and proactively seeks it, showing increasing self-awareness. Regular discussions about needs and solutions can support this development.

“________” confidently shares strategies that work best for their learning style with peers and teachers. Encouraging collaboration on learning techniques can strengthen this skill.

“________” is learning to communicate boundaries effectively with peers, showing an understanding of personal space and limits. Reinforcing these boundaries in social contexts is helpful.

“_______” is otherwise doing well in school but struggles with maintaining attention for extended periods. As a result, she gets distracted and misses important instructions in class. While we are working on minimizing distractions and using timers in class, it would help “_______” if you could play memory games and puzzles at home and ensure she gets a restful sleep so she can arrive at school well-rested.

“_______” is a very ambitious student. Consequently, she sets unrealistic goals that are hard to accomplish. This often leads her to disappointment. Improving her executive functioning skills by teaching her how to set realistic goals and create action plans to achieve them can help her in this matter.

“_______” is good when it comes to planning and organizing her daily tasks. However, she struggles with executive functioning in social situations, for example, understanding social cues and regulating behavior in social interactions. Working on these skills can help her on the social front in the future.

“_______” is taking small steps towards improving her problem-solving skills. With proper support and intervention, she will soon be able to identify problems and generate relevant solutions.

“_______” has fair time management skills and manages to submit assignments on time. However, she needs several reminders and prompts to get started with the assigned tasks. With constant guidance, she can improve on initiating her tasks on time.

“________” has shown progress in organizing materials for each subject and rarely forgets to bring required items. A color-coded system could further enhance this skill.

“________” is improving in breaking down assignments into manageable parts with teacher guidance. Practicing with personal projects at home can help refine this skill.

“________” has started using a planner effectively to keep track of homework and upcoming tests. Encouraging daily updates will build consistency.

“________” demonstrates growth in managing transitions between tasks with less resistance. A visual schedule can reinforce this improvement.

“________” is learning to set goals for independent study time and evaluates progress at the end of sessions.

“________” has shown improvement in planning and completing multi-step tasks with minimal reminders. Providing visual checklists could enhance this growth further.

“________” is learning to prioritize tasks based on deadlines and importance, which helps in completing work more efficiently. Continuing to model prioritization strategies will aid this progress.

“________” demonstrates the ability to monitor personal progress and adjust effort levels accordingly. Introducing reflective practices, such as journaling, can enhance self-awareness.

“________” is beginning to use graphic organizers to structure thoughts and ideas for assignments effectively. Regular practice with these tools can solidify this skill.

“________” is improving in managing long-term projects by setting smaller, achievable milestones. Encouraging early planning will help ensure consistent success.

“___________” has shown notable improvement in maintaining the focus on a task for a longer period of time. He/She engages with the study material and asks questions which helps him/her stay focused and attentive. By providing a distraction-free environment, “___________” will continue to make progress in this area.

“___________” is consistently working towards improving focus and attentional abilities in the class.

“___________” has shown progress in improving focus and attention difficulties. However, he/she still faces challenges in shifting attention between tasks. Explicit instructions and momentary breaks can further help stay on task and enhance the attention span. With consistent practice and guidance, “___________” will continue improving the sustaining focus.

With consistent practice and efforts, “___________” has shown growth in the ability to focus and sustain attention for longer period of time. He/She maintains the timetable and tries to constantly follow it to complete the tasks on time. By using effective time-management techniques like tracking time and breaking tasks into smaller manageable chunks, “___________” can strengthen his/her focus and attention skills.

“_______’s” focus and attention are improving over time. We are consistently using positive reinforcement to reward her/his engagement and attention during learning activities.

“_______’s” biggest struggle is maintaining focus during classroom activities. Hence, we are working with the school therapist to develop personalized strategies to help her/him improve in this aspect so that even she/he can maximize the benefits of learning.

I have noticed that “_______” has better focus and attention when we allow her/him to make choices about learning, such as selecting activities and materials or choosing a preferred seat in the class. Try offering autonomy at home too, so her/his love for learning continues to grow.

I would like to share “_______’s” improvement. She/He can now work with concentration by breaking large tasks into small chunks. As she/he can focus better for short periods, breaking tasks into smaller steps allows her/him to maintain engagement and make progress without feeling overwhelmed.

A distraction-free environment is “_______’s” best friend. Please provide her/him the same at home so she/he can learn and work on assignments with optimal focus and productivity.

“________” stays engaged in lessons when provided with hands-on or interactive activities. Incorporating more sensory-based learning experiences could further enhance concentration.

“________” is learning to redirect attention back to tasks after short breaks, which helps in completing assignments on time. Practicing mindfulness techniques can support sustained focus.

“________” benefits from sitting in a distraction-free zone in the classroom, where they can better concentrate on tasks. Identifying similar environments at home can be helpful.

“________” is improving in tuning out background noise during group activities and can stay focused for longer durations. Encouraging the use of noise-canceling tools when necessary can support this growth.

“________” actively participates in structured activities and shows better concentration during these sessions. Gradually increasing the complexity of these tasks can further develop attention span.

“________” uses movement breaks effectively to stay focused during long lessons. Incorporating scheduled movement activities can enhance learning engagement.

“________” demonstrates improved attention during discussions when provided with visual cues like charts or diagrams. Encouraging the use of visual aids will reinforce this skill.

“________” shows focus and persistence in completing puzzles and problem-solving tasks, often exceeding expectations. Introducing more challenging activities can further this progress.

“________” is beginning to recognize when their attention wanders and uses techniques like deep breathing to refocus. Encouraging self-monitoring strategies will strengthen this ability.

Effective strategies for motivating students with special needs

Motivating students with special needs requires understanding their individual strengths, challenges, and interests. Here are some additional ways to motivate students with special needs:

Use Self-Determination Theory (SDT): Special needs children may have limited autonomy in their lives. Offer choices and opportunities for them to make decisions about their learning, taking into consideration their unique abilities and preferences. Provide adaptive materials and technologies that promote independence and self-direction.

Implement Goal Theory: Collaborate with the child and their parents or caregivers to set SMART goals that are tailored to their individual abilities and needs. Break larger goals into smaller, achievable sub-goals to provide a sense of progress and success. Use visual supports and concrete tools to track and celebrate their accomplishments.

Apply the Cognitive Engagement Model: Special needs children may have varied interests and learning styles. Enhance the value of tasks by making meaningful connections to their real-life experiences, passions, and strengths. Modify instructional materials and provide multi-sensory experiences to accommodate different learning preferences. Foster positive emotional experiences by creating a supportive and inclusive classroom environment.

Use Mastery-oriented Feedback: Provide specific and constructive feedback that focuses on the child’s effort, progress, and the process of learning. Acknowledge their unique strengths and growth areas. Offer visual cues, social stories, or assistive technology to help them understand and internalize feedback.

Foster Intrinsic Motivation: Special needs children may benefit from finding personal meaning and value in their learning experiences. Offer activities and projects that align with their interests and strengths. Create opportunities for self-expression, creativity, and exploration. Celebrate their individual progress and accomplishments.

Foster a Growth Mindset: Encourage special needs children to adopt a growth mindset by emphasizing their potential for growth, effort, and perseverance. Teach them that abilities can develop over time with practice and support. Provide specific feedback that highlights their progress and efforts.

Special needs students often require tailored education to achieve their learning goals. One approach to support their educational progress is the use of functional skills checklists. These checklists are designed to assess a student’s progress in specific functional areas, such as communication, social skills, and self-care. By identifying areas of strength and weakness, educators can develop individualized learning plans and provide targeted support to help special needs students reach their full potential.

Furthermore, much like the special education assessment checklist, the functional skills checklist is an essential tool that plays a vital role in supporting the academic and social development of special needs students. In this article, we will explore the key features and benefits of functional skills checklists for special needs students, and how they can be used to improve student outcomes.

What are basic functional skills for special needs students?

Functional skills for students refer to the basic abilities and knowledge that are necessary for individuals to live independently and participate in society.

1. Communication Skills:

Using communication devices, such as augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices or sign language: Some students with special needs may have difficulty communicating verbally or understanding spoken language. In these cases, alternative forms of communication, such as using picture symbols or sign language, can be helpful. AAC devices are electronic tools that allow individuals to select words or phrases to be spoken aloud, while sign language involves using hand gestures and facial expressions to convey meaning.

Expressing needs and wants: Being able to communicate basic needs and wants is an essential life skill. This may include asking for food, water, or assistance with a task.

Following directions: Following directions is important for participating in activities and completing tasks. This may include following instructions for a game or following a recipe to prepare a meal. For the same, many activities and games can be conducted.

Engaging in conversation with others: Social communication skills, such as engaging in conversation with others, can be challenging for some students with special needs. This may involve learning to take turns speaking, staying on topic, and using appropriate language for the situation.

Understanding and using nonverbal communication, such as facial expressions and body language: Many non-verbal communication quotes suggest that nonverbal communication can be just as important as verbal communication in understanding and responding to others. Students may need support in recognizing and interpreting nonverbal cues from others, as well as using nonverbal cues to express their own emotions and intentions.

2. Social Interaction Skills:

Making and maintaining friendships: Developing social skills and making friends can be a key part of social development for students with special needs. This may involve learning social norms and rules, recognizing social cues, and practicing social behaviors in different settings. For the same, books, activities, and IEP goals can be deployed.

Sharing with others: Sharing is a critical social skill for getting along with others and building positive relationships. Students may need support in learning how to take turns, share materials, and communicate their needs when sharing with others.

Taking turns during games and activities: Taking turns is a foundational social skill that allows individuals to participate in group activities and games. Students may need support in learning how to wait their turn, how to manage their emotions when waiting, and how to gracefully lose or win. For example, while hosting a personality development group activity, many functional skills can be boosted, all at once.

Understanding social cues, such as facial expressions and tone of voice: Social cues provide important information about how others are feeling and what they are thinking. Students may need support in learning how to recognize and interpret social cues, such as facial expressions and tone of voice, in order to better understand others.

Responding appropriately to social situations, such as greetings or expressions of sympathy: Knowing how to respond appropriately to social situations is an important life skill. This may include knowing how to greet someone, express sympathy or congratulations, and respond to questions or invitations.

Dressing and grooming oneself: Being able to dress and groom oneself is an essential part of daily living. This may involve learning how to choose appropriate clothing, tie shoelaces, or brush hair.

Preparing meals and snacks: Knowing how to prepare meals and snacks can be an important part of promoting independence and self-sufficiency. Students may need support in learning basic cooking skills, such as measuring ingredients or using kitchen appliances.

Performing household tasks, such as cleaning or laundry: Being able to perform basic household tasks, such as cleaning or doing laundry, can be an important part of independent living. The same can also be done through a number of financial literacy activities.

Managing personal finances, such as counting money or making purchases: Knowing how to manage personal finances, such as counting money or making purchases, can be an important part of participating in the community.

4. Self-Care Skills:

Aren’t we always willing to put the best foot forward? May it be a cooking competition or simply dressing for dinner, we tend to do it all perfectly. While many of us prefer discipline with timings, some of us are more concerned about organizing things. Do you wonder where this comes from?

Students get exposure to different life skills during their schooling years and that’s how they learn to plan, schedule, organize, and solve problems. However, teaching life skills to special students is indeed challenging as they need time to process things and teachers might have to look for alternative ways to conventional teaching to make things easy for them to grab and practice.

To lead a better future, students with special needs should be given a good amount of training in the area of life skills. It is significant for them to understand the basic functioning in everyday life that enables them to perform better in academics and future jobs. Just like there are handwriting tools for special needs students, there are activities to teach life skills too!

Through the usage of innovative activities that focus on life skills, teachers and parents can better groom these children in a fun manner. Right from fundamentals of everyday life to controlling emotions and being creative, the below-mentioned activities offer a comprehensive learning experience. Check these activities that are easy to conduct and result in the successful implementation of life skills.

Crucial Life skills activities for children with special needs

Life skills are significant for growing children as these skills impact overall child development. The below-mentioned activities focus on offering the right skill to enhance knowledge and learning experience for learners.

1. Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow

The knowledge of reading a calendar comes in handy in every area of life. Gaining this knowledge can help students learn the important skills of planning and scheduling various day-to-day activities on a regular basis.

Divide students into teams of 2 or 3

Distribute 1 calendar amongst each team

Ask students questions. For example: Which day is 10th November?

Which date comes on the second Monday of February?

Which is the third month of the year?

Students have to search through the calendar to answer the questions

Through this activity, students can learn a lot about how to read a calendar clearly and gain insights into a very significant life skill!

2. What’s the Time?

Time telling is an essential skill for learners to understand and alight their tasks. It is necessary to know how to convey the right time as it nullifies confusion and miscommunication in various domains of life.

To conduct this activity, ask students to draw a clock on a blank sheet of paper

Guide them to write numbers with colorful sketches

Once they have a clock ready, teach them to tell time using table 5

After this, ask them any time and let them show it by drawing dials. For example, if you say 5:30, let them draw the dials representing the time

This activity can help students learn easily by telling time. Learning becomes easier and faster with a supportive team. It can help students gain clarity on the various ways that time is represented on clocks and watches. For further guidance, know how to teach time telling to special students in a creative way.

3. Cleanliness Act

Cleanliness is next to Godliness. While cleanliness is an important part of life, kids with special needs need to understand it with practicality.

Show a video of how to promote cleanliness in the house and in public spaces

Put chits with various situations in a bowl. For example, Sneezing in a public place or at home or throwing food wrappers

Act in two ways, one in a correct manner and the other in a wrong manner. For example, sneeze without your hands covering your mouth in one scene and sneeze with your hands or handkerchief covering your mouth in the second scene

Ask students to judge which is the right method to maintain cleanliness

Correct them if wrong

Through videos, students can learn and remember the ways of cleanliness for a long time. When the teacher acts, it becomes an interactive activity that further strengthens learning. Seeing the teacher act in the right manner models or shapes students to act in a similar manner

4. Personal Hygiene

Maintaining personal hygiene is a necessary life skill that can promote good health and vitality. The importance of personal hygiene needs to be inculcated right from a young age to help young learners understand, “Health is Wealth!”

To conduct this activity, ask students to choose a habit that defines personal hygiene

After this, each student needs to talk about its importance. For example, a student may choose to talk about brushing teeth twice a day and how it is important to prevent cavities and other dental problems

Similarly, all students should have different personal hygiene suggestions and tips for the class

Such an activity promotes personal hygiene and also makes students aware of adapting different habits for their betterment. This activity can help students learn how to develop a routine that contributes to their hygiene. Asking questions with options can encourage them further to instill the act in their daily life.

5. Dining In

The knowledge of good table manners is important for every individual. Having good table manners helps in maintaining good health and also contributes to creating the right impression in any social gathering.

Give students spoons, forks, table cloth, plates, tissue paper, and the necessary cutlery on their desk

Show students how to eat with the help of spoons, forks, and other cutlery

Show them various videos

Encourage them to imitate you when you are showing them the way to eat food

Guide them if they have doubts

This activity promotes learning through experience. Experiential learning is the best type of learning as it can help students learn effectively.

6. Groceries and Essentials

Knowing how to buy groceries and essentials that are required daily is an absolutely important skill that cannot be overlooked. This knowledge can help students gain confidence, feel empowered and give them a sense of independence to a good extent.

Set up various simulated stores in the classroom

Let every store have a name and different essential objects

Divide students into groups of 3

Give them a specific amount of artificial money

Give them a list of what they have to shop for

Ask them to go to various stores and shop for the things on the list

Guide them throughout the process

This activity is based on incidental learning concepts as it helps students become responsible for the tasks that are assigned to them. Through this activity, students can gain great exposure to some real-life situations!

7. Conversation Time!

Communication is an essential life skill as students with or without special needs need to know the basics of striking up any conversation. This activity is simple and focuses on conveying emotions.

To conduct this activity, make different chits containing topics of everyday life. For example, you can have chits with the topics – dinner, shopping, or homework

Now, call 2 students and ask 1 to pick a chit

After this, they need to talk on any topic with each other and learn to respond as well

You can act as a guide in between the activity

While communicating with other students or friends seems easy, students with special needs might find it a challenge. Hence, this activity tries to break the resistance between two individuals through everyday conversations.

8. Create an Art

Creative thinking is a significant part of everyday life because that is the way where individuals learn to creatively solve problems. This activity focuses on mixing elements and waiting for the final creative output.

To conduct this activity, make a set of different items including crayons, clay, sketch pens, stickers, and other decorative items

Make sure everything is divided equally among students

Give them a blank sheet of paper and let them create any art they wish to

They can choose to draw, color, stick, or even paint on the paper

Any art activity conducted in free form leads to an enhancement in creative thinking. Such an activity promotes learning and also helps students to understand the importance of utilizing available resources.

9. Copy My Cooking

Food is one of the crucial elements for survival and also an important life skill. Students with special needs can better lead a good life with the basics of cooking and understanding some kitchen ideas.

To conduct this activity, ask students to bring the ingredients of a sandwich

After this, start instructing them on taking the bread and apply butter

Now, show them how to put vegetables and other required sauces or dips in the sandwich

After this, ask them about their experience with the process

A sandwich is an easy option but with just a sandwich, students with special needs get exposure to different techniques and placement of vegetables. You can always enhance the learning experience with an open discussion.

10. Vocations!

Children with special needs also have a space in different vocations in the future. One of the life skills to teach is to acquire an understanding and interest in a preferred vocation.

To conduct this activity, ask students to choose from different vocations

They need to dress and act the way the profession suits the position

For example, a student may dress like a chef and discuss how chefs cook or serve different types of food

Similarly, other students may choose different vocations depending on their interest

As students act out and also dress up like professionals, they get exposure to various vocations. They also understand how different professions have different work and responsibilities. It also helps them explore job opportunities for people with learning disabilities.

Other significant life skills for special needs

Just like humans have different phases of life, different life skills are needed for the same. Life skills can be better understood when used in different situations including social surroundings, personal life, academic journey, and other life events.

Self-management is one of the crucial skills for kids with special needs. Students need to know how to manage their time, efforts, and tasks in an efficient manner.

Empathy also is a must-have skill as it helps individuals understand the emotions of other people. Empathy makes them more humble towards different situations.

Problems in the academic journey might be common and that’s when students should be backed with problem-solving skills. It helps them understand the core problem and its various solutions.

Decision-making skill also plays an important part in life as students need to be decisive to decide the course of action in any given situation. It helps them gain clarity and confidence.

Wrapping up

Life skills are an integral part of everyday life and they sure need to be taught to students at an early age. With the inclusion of activities, students with special needs get an opportunity to instantly connect with the skills. It also helps them create relatability making it easy to apply each one of them.
Schooling is an integral part of one’s growing up. This is the phase of making strides. But, this phase might be a challenging chapter in a child’s life with special needs. Factoring this, special schools have become the need of the hour. In these institutions, teachers are trained differently, and education is also through a different modus operandi.

A cut above, for even more ease and comfort, online special schools have paved their way into the educational sector. Moreover, not just online, some of these schools are even free! This is even more crucial for individuals living in towns with limited or no access to special schools.

This post will look into how online schools for special students function, why they are important, and seven free schools for special needs students.

Online special schools – A burning need

Physical schools can be great; the teacher-student proximity, learning environment, and the feeling of being in the company of peers can positively impact a student. But have you ever wondered how virtual school could be a remarkable experience for special students? Here are a few benefits that make online special schools favorable for students with impaired needs –

Convenience

Online education adds convenience to special needs students by offering an alternative to traveling long distances for education. They can study from the comfort of their home, where they feel more at ease, safe, and loved.

Students stay strong

Online education enriches the learning process of special needs students. Some advantages that go in this favor are freer participation, no large crowds, having the privilege to study at the desired pace and time. Often, students feel hesitant to answer in front of the whole class; the scenario would be different here, which would make the students stronger communicators.

The best place for curious learners

The Internet has everything, and you can search for anything, starting from rhymes for children to research papers and everything in between. A young mind that likes to wander freely would find himself at home with the internet. With proper direction and guidance, students can use the internet to quench their curiosity to know more about concepts. This may lead to academic growth and a resilient attitude in them.

Free online learning schools for special needs students

From making teaching videos to connecting with students emotionally and keeping parents in the loop, there are many online schools that are working for the enhancement of special students. We have listed below seven of the best free online schooling options for children with special needs:

1. eAchieve Academy

eAchieve Academy is a non-profit educational institute operated by the School District of Waukesha. This institute is not affiliated with any academic partner, but it makes for a highly trusted virtual academy. This independent body has academy teachers who are veteran School District of Waukesha employees.

By helping with an extensive curriculum, this online special education school is perfect for students with special needs because they might find themselves bored in a traditional brick-and-mortar school. In this online school, they can learn and read outside the class and still become academically strong.

Official Website

2. Connections Academy

Connection Academy realizes that special students need the flexibility to learn in their own ways, which makes them curate multiple modules. Each of these segments is dedicated and formulated according to the different disabilities of the child. They work on such an educational module with the thought that one special education program cannot fit the needs of all specially-abled children.

Online school Vs. Physical schools for special needs children

The Internet has changed the way we live and impacted everything. Moreover, education too has not been left untouched. However, is an online school really required or useful?

Physical schools have a set of pros. These schools are places that teach students ethics of life along with social interaction. Students’ visual feedback is ensured in physical education, and teachers can move around and interact with students directly. These attributes are a clear miss in the case of the online school process.

While physical schools can be great, certain points make online schooling more fruitful for children with special needs. Online schooling offers great convenience to students by offering flexibility in learning and opting for a relevant learning speed. Apart from this, students can study from anywhere; they can do a course from a university in Australia while sitting in New York. This not only provides ease but is financially beneficial too.

Challenges faced in online special education and how to overcome them?

Everything has its own pros and cons. Similarly, with online schools being convenient, affordable, and much more, are there any challenges that come with this teaching module? Let’s look at some demanding factors. Convenience, affordability, and more participation; while online schools can be a bliss for students, is there any challenge with this teaching module? Let’s find out.

1. Abrupt Transition

When there is a sudden transition from physical schools to online schools, students might take time to adjust to this new setup. Students with impaired needs might take longer to adjust to this transition, and the educators and the parents must wait patiently. The use of technology, changes in the environment, and teaching methods might bewilder them, thus taking longer to regulate.

2. Technology

Technology can be bewildering for special students; hence, going to school might seem simpler for a differently-abled student. It might seem like a challenge at first, but as the student gets acquainted with the technology, the setup becomes beneficial for them.

3. Parents Involvement

The parents need to be fully devoted to their kids when they are enrolled in an online special school. From making sure that they are paying attention, to regularly following up with the teachers; online special schools demand a lot of parent involvement.

4. Keeping the students engaged

In physical special schools, teachers receive special training to engage the students. But, due to the low attention span of students with impaired needs, it might be a challenge for the teachers to keep students engaged, and motivated. Establishing a personal bond and connection takes a longer time.

Conclusion

Special needs students from villages and towns may not get ample sources to learn and gain knowledge, which makes online schools a favorable option. Children with impaired needs need special attention, and a different kind of learning experience, which not only helps them become academically strong, but also builds up their social skills, and this is what the online schools do best!

This is still an underresearched and understudied subject. I am also the founder of Smartynote -‘The notepad app for dyslexia’,
