Being a substitute teacher, it is at times difficult to connect with students and keep them engaged. Students need time to feel comfortable around a new teacher and adjust to their teaching style and actively participate in the class. Also, it can be challenging to hold the attention of students and make them understand a concept in the same way as their regular teacher does as every student learns differently and it takes time to know them and connect with them.

In such a case, it becomes essential to have a collection of innovative and creative activities that can save the day. In the following section of the article, you’ll find some creative and quirky math activities for substitute teachers that can stimulate the learning environment and lighten up the atmosphere with curiosity and excitement.

Engaging math adventures: Creative activities for substitute teachers

1. Estimation Station

Math comes with the ability to guess and estimate. There are many instances in daily life that requires us to estimate a certain number or quantity. This activity is going to address the same.

In this estimation activity, begin by introducing the concept of estimation, explaining that it involves making an educated guess based on available information and prior knowledge. Emphasize that estimations don’t have to be precise, but rather a close approximation.

How to do it:

Gather a transparent jar or container and fill it with a known quantity of small objects, such as buttons, marbles, or beans. Count the actual number of items and keep it a secret.

Display the jar in a prominent place in the classroom, ensuring that students can observe the contents without touching or manipulating it.

Explain to the students that their task is to estimate the number of items inside the jar. Encourage them to think about different strategies they can use to make their guesses, such as considering the size of the objects, estimating the volume of the jar, or comparing it to a known quantity.

Distribute paper and pencils to the students, allowing them to write down their estimates.

Once all the students have made their estimations, reveal the actual number of items in the jar. Have a discussion about the different strategies students used, the reasoning behind their estimates, and how close their guesses were to the actual value.

Celebrate the student who made the closest estimation and encourage the class to reflect on the experience, discussing what they learned about estimation and how it can be applied in real-life situations.

2. Math Art

Art integration in education has proven to be very beneficial, especially for mathematics. In this activity, begin by highlighting the connection between math and art, explaining that both disciplines rely on patterns, symmetry, and geometric principles. Emphasize that math can be creative and that art can be mathematical.

How to do it:

Provide students with a variety of art supplies, including rulers, compasses, colored pencils, and paper. Show them examples of geometric patterns, tessellations, and symmetrical designs to inspire their creativity.

Explain different mathematical concepts that can be explored through art, such as symmetry (reflection, rotational), geometric shapes, tessellation (repeating patterns), or the golden ratio.

Encourage students to experiment with different techniques and materials, allowing them to create their own unique math-inspired artwork. They can explore geometric patterns, create symmetrical designs, or experiment with tessellations.

Provide guidance and support as needed, assisting students in incorporating mathematical elements into their artwork. Encourage them to discuss their artistic choices and how they relate to the math concepts they are exploring.

Allocate time for students to share their artwork with the class. Encourage them to explain the mathematical principles they incorporated and what inspired their creative decisions.

Foster a positive and supportive environment, celebrating the diverse interpretations and expressions of math through art.

3. Math Dice Games

In the world of education, math warm-up activities are like magical potions that can transform a dull and dreary classroom into a lively and dynamic hub of mathematical excitement. They’re like the opening act of a grand performance that sets the stage for a day filled with numerical discoveries and intellectual feats.

Math warm-up activities are not just ordinary exercises, but rather creative and innovative games, puzzles, and challenges that stimulate students’ minds and inspire their curiosity. They involve physical movement, and collaborative problem-solving, and just like math storybooks entail imaginative storytelling to create an immersive and engaging learning experience.

Think of it as a magical incantation that unlocks the hidden potential of your students’ mathematical abilities and unleashes their inner mathematician! So let’s cast the spell and explore some of the most creative and enchanting math warm-up activities for middle school that will transport you and your students to a world of mathematical wonder!

Rev up your students’ mathematical engines with these exciting math warm-up activities

Looking for engaging and creative ways to start your middle school math class? Look no further than these 8 math warm-up activities! From logic puzzles to estimation games, these activities will get your students’ minds working and set the stage for a productive class.

1. Math Trivia

Who doesn’t love a good trivia game? Start your math warm-up with a fun math trivia competition. Prepare a list of math questions related to various topics such as algebra, geometry, fractions, and decimals.

Divide the class into teams and ask questions one by one. The team with the most correct answers wins. This activity is a great way to review previously taught math concepts, build teamwork, and encourage healthy competition. This game also serves as a math vocabulary game, as the knowledge of math terms increases as kids indulge in this game.

2. Estimation Jar

How good are you at estimating? Fill a jar with objects and ask students to estimate the number of items in the jar. With the Estimation Jar activity, students can put their estimation skills to the test by filling a jar with a predetermined number of items, such as marbles, candy, or buttons, and challenging their classmates to guess the number of items in the jar. Hence, this activity also acts as a fun estimation activity!

The student with the closest estimate wins a prize! This activity not only encourages students to develop their estimation skills but also helps build their number sense and ability to visualize quantities.

3. Mathematical Geography Animal Challenge

Get ready for the ultimate brain workout with MGAC – the activity that combines math, geography, and creativity! Choose a number, follow some simple math steps, and see if you can come up with an animal name starting with the last letter of a country. Let’s see how many animals you can name with this unique math warm-up activity!”

Choose a number between 1 and 10. Multiply your number by 9 and add the digits of the result together. Subtract 5 from the result and find the letter in the alphabet that corresponds to the number you ended up with (A=1, B=2, C=3, etc.). Think of a country that starts with that letter, then think of an animal that starts with the last letter of the name of the country you chose.
For example, if you chose the number 4:

4 x 9 = 36
3 + 6 = 9
9 – 5 = 4

The 4th letter of the alphabet is D, so you might choose Denmark. The last letter of Denmark is K, so you might choose Kangaroo. This activity combines math, geography, and language skills, making it a fun and engaging way to warm up your brain for more challenging math problems.

4. Math Riddles

8. Math Facts Relay Race

The Math Facts Relay Race is an excellent activity for middle school students to sharpen their arithmetic skills. It involves challenges that require quick thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork.

The challenges of this activity involve solving basic math problems quickly and accurately. The teacher can call out a wide range of math facts, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. For example, the teacher might call out “8 times 5,” and the student at the front of the line must quickly calculate the answer (which is 40), run to the board, and write the answer before running back to tag the next student in line.

The challenge in this activity is to solve math problems quickly and accurately while under pressure. Students must also work together as a team to ensure that each student has a turn to participate and to communicate effectively to avoid repeating answers.

To make the activity more challenging, the teacher can introduce more difficult math facts or time limits for solving each problem. Additionally, the teacher can provide incentives such as small prizes for the winning team or extra credit points.

Unleash the mathematician in your middle schoolers: 5 reasons why math warm-up activities are the ultimate trick up your sleeve!

Did you know that math warm-up activities are the perfect tool for priming your middle schoolers’ brains? Here are five reasons why:

When we do math warm-up activities, we’re actually activating specific regions of our brain, like the prefrontal cortex and the parietal lobes. These regions are responsible for problem-solving, decision-making, and spatial reasoning, all of which are essential for math!

Research[1] has shown that math warm-up activities can help to reduce anxiety and stress in students, which can make it easier for them to learn and retain new information. A relaxed brain is a happy brain!

Math warm-up activities are the perfect tool for livening up a boring classroom. They inject some much-needed excitement and energy into the day, and they’re a great way to start class with a bang!

Math warm-up activities are a fun way to build community in the classroom. Whether you’re doing a group activity or a solo challenge, these activities encourage students to work together, share their ideas, and support each other. Who knows, a student might just learn to crack a math joke!

Math warm-up activities are a great way to boost confidence. When students feel confident in their math skills, they’re more likely to participate in class and take on more challenging problems.

Conclusion

Maths warm-up activities are more than just a routine part of a math class. They have the power to spark a love for math in students and help them build the foundation for future success in the subject. Through creative and engaging warm-up activities and math games, educators can encourage their students to explore the fascinating world of numbers and problem-solving, while fostering critical thinking and teamwork skills.

So let’s embrace the magic of math warm-up activities and make them an integral part of our daily classroom routine. Let’s unleash the mathematicians within our middle school students and inspire them to reach new heights of mathematical achievement. With a little creativity and imagination, anything is possible!

From “I” to “X,” as a child, were you confused when your teacher called “L” a 50 and “C” a hundred? Well, gone are the days when you could not make it easy for little learners by using some tools for mathematical concepts. Hence, for teaching the kids Roman Numerals and helping them practice these, the teachers can use worksheets, which can provide the student with the necessary knowledge and help them practice and clear their doubts all at once!

As Roman Numbers are used in various situations in everyday life, from using them as class levels in schools to using them in clocks, hence, it becomes inevitable for the kids to learn these numerals. However, it can be tricky and challenging at times to teach this. So, using a printable worksheet becomes an ideal solution for teachers and educators. Worksheets make it easy for students to grasp knowledge and even raise queries in real time. Check out the usage and application of this worksheet to incorporate it into everyday lessons.

Roman numerals worksheet: What’s included

The Roman numerals worksheet is divided into 3 parts thereby offering different ways of teaching Roman numbers. The worksheets include a combination of creativity, craft, and theoretical knowledge.

1. Match the Numbers

Students can often be perplexed about Roman numbers because they are not only different but also take time to be understood. At times, creating relatability with mathematical numerals also becomes a challenge.

The very first page of the printable is all about matching the right Arabic numbers to the Roman numerals.

The left side is a list of Roman numerals while the right side displays a list of Arabic numbers.

Students need to identify the correct matching and then match them using a ruler. To ease the process, the first one has been done.

Students are more likely to remember everything in a sequence. However, such printables offer random choices of matching Roman and Arabic numbers thereby polishing their brains with better knowledge.

2. Make Numbers with Matchsticks

Creativity and math are correlated as using such aspects makes learning even more interesting. This worksheet uses matchsticks to teach the concept of writing Roman numbers

The page is divided into two parts where there are huge visible numbers on the left side and space for answers on the right side. Colorful numbers simply add more fun to the learning environment.

Students need to use matchsticks and stick/place them according to the number mentioned on the left side.

First one is already done for a better understanding

Usage of matchsticks helps students form Roman numbers in a creative manner. They not only learn about Roman numerals but also get a chance to show how to write the great Arabic numbers in the Roman style.

3. Bingo

The printable is a visually appealing way to engage students in learning. This is definitely proved by the inclusion of a creative game that can always be played in the classroom.

The last page of the printable is the Bingo where various Roman numbers are written in small boxes.

In this game, teachers need to call out different numbers and students need to circle/cross them one by one

As students complete any one line, they can cut the letter B from Bingo

When students complete 5 lines, and that’s when they can shout Bingo!

As students get the same printable, they are sure to shout Bingo altogether. Apart from this, students get to only listen and learn to recognize Arabic numbers with that Roman numbers.

How can worksheets add value?

With the usage of worksheets, teachers can better get to know the understanding level of students along with areas of improvement in the learning process.

As worksheets are designed with high-end graphics and large fonts, they help retain student attention and create curiosity among them.

When theoretical lessons get monotonous, worksheets add a spark to the learning environment due to the existence of activity-based learning.

Worksheets are printable making them super accessible for parents thereby allowing teachers to assess students’ knowledge outside the classroom.

Worksheets are generally reusable hence, adding value to long-lasting learning, and can always be reused to revise concepts.

Decoding easy ways to learn roman numerals

Make use of straws to add a fun element to the learning process. Pick any number and ask students to make a similar Roman number using straws. If you say 8, they need to make VIII using straws.

Create a huge circle with cardboard and draw different Roman numbers on it. Now, read aloud a number and quickly ask students to jump on that number. Now, give them different operations and ask them to keep jumping on the right one. For example, if you say 5 + 2, then they need to jump on VII.

Make a different set of placards with Arabic and Roman numerals. Divide placards between students and play the music. As the music stops, ask students to find the right pair of Arabic numbers matching the Roman numerals.

To make it fun, ask students to create flashcards of the numbers – 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, 500, and 1000. Now, simply read aloud a Roman alphabet that depicts any of these numbers. As soon as you read it, students should raise the right placard that matches it. If you say C, everyone should show 100.

Various methods can be used to teach Roman numbers. Make sure to keep it challenging with a timer or a reward at the end to ensure that every method creates an engaging learning experience!

Conclusion

While Roman numbers seem easy to teach, students can often be confused when writing them down. With the help of such creative worksheets, teachers and parents can often engage students in discovering Roman numerals. As worksheets are well-designed and visually appealing colors, students are more likely to pay attention to learning. It should be noted that various online games and classroom activities can also be included to enhance the learning experience when teaching Roman numbers.

Decimals are numbers that include a whole number, a fractional part, and a decimal point that separates the two. For example, in the number 34.58, 34 is the whole number, and 58 is the fractional part (whose value is less than 1). Both are separated by a point known as the decimal point.

Just like whole numbers, decimals can be added, subtracted, multiplied, and divided. Students may find dividing decimals a little tricky as they are not whole numbers and have an additional set of rules for calculation. But once they understand the rules, dividing decimals becomes easy.

Besides practicing the traditional way, students can practice dividing decimals using online games. Games are an ideal tool to promote learning. Students love them because they are fun, and educators love them because they keep students engaged and improve their problem-solving skills.

Fun and challenging online games to practice dividing decimal numbers

Learning the division of decimal numbers doesn’t have to be boring. Online games mentioned below can help to practice this mathematical concept and build a strong understanding.

1. Shopping: Decimal divisions to the tenths

This is a fun and interactive game to practice dividing decimal numbers. Students get the chance to buy stuff using dimes available to them for shopping. They have to spend the dimes equally on all the products before moving forward. Once they shop for their fun stuff, they need to work on solving the problem of dividing decimals. Every correct answer gives them the opportunity to shop for more fun items and proceed in the game. The game is designed to teach players decimal division to the tenth place.

Game link

2. Gold rush division

This game helps to build a conceptual understanding of dividing decimals. Players have to use the regrouping method to divide the decimals. The questions in the game cover dividing decimals up to two decimal places. The game begins by asking players to divide gold equally between two miners. In the following questions, more miners join in, making the question a little more challenging. Players need to successfully solve a question before moving on to the next one.

Game Link

3. Supermarket decimals

Here is a supermarket challenge to teach decimal division and let players know how they can use this math concept each time they go shopping with their parents. The game presents questions that require players to divide decimals up to two decimal places. The best part about this game is that it brings other characters to converse with the main character to discuss how they can solve the question at hand. It gives subtle hints to guide players to solve the problem correctly.

Game Link

4. Decimalware ÷

Here is a game that allows students to practice converting decimals into fractions and dividing them to find the answer. The game is based on the story that Decimalware ÷, a destructive software, is attacking computer systems. Players need to protect computers by installing antivirus software which can be completed by solving questions that appear on top of the grid. The decimals must be first converted into fractions to get the correct answer. Dividing decimals becomes less intimidating when practiced through this stimulating and engrossing online game.

Game Link

5. Decimal division

In this game, the player is presented with ten decimal division problems, all at once, on the screen. Players must solve the questions as fast as they can and match them with their correct answers. After submitting answers, players have the option to check which questions they got wrong, and their correct answers. The game also has a leaderboard to display player rankings and the time they took to answer all the questions.

Game Link

6. Decimal board game

This online board game is great to encourage competitiveness as it can be played by two players. Players have to roll the online dice to see their questions. After player 1 submits the answer, player 2 gets a chance to roll the dice and work on a different question. The game is not restricted to questions related to dividing decimals, but also covers other areas like addition, multiplication, and subtraction. Hence, this game is good for practicing all aspects of decimal numbers.

Game Link

Mathnook brings a thrilling game filled with adventure and speed for those who love to play action-packed games. Players can enjoy this car racing game along with practicing their math skills. To keep their car moving, players must collect fuel from time to time and carefully control their cars to avoid collisions with other vehicles on the road. Players can fill up their fuel tanks by running over cars that indicate the problem whose answer matches the player’s car number. Interesting, isn’t it?

Wrapping up,

We come across decimal numbers almost every day. Whether we are counting money, calculating our bills at the grocery store, or visiting a gas station to refuel a car, we have to do our calculations with decimal numbers. Therefore, students must learn how to round off decimals for easy estimation and perform direct calculations to deal with these numbers in daily life.

Online games are a great way of teaching and practicing dividing decimals as kids engage with them better while developing a good hold on the topic. So, give the above online games a try and get better at dividing decimals.

Standardized assessments in any subject are essential for the personal evaluation of a student currently involved in any level of education. With the progress in educational research and development, the popularity of standardized assessments has increased manifold. This fact is especially true for mathematics.

Students, their parents, and teachers emphasize standardized math assessments to ensure learners acquire fluency in mathematics. The skills they learn from these tests help them achieve smoother admission to higher levels of education like college or university. If you are wondering which standardized math tests you should go for, this article is for you. Read on to explore more!

What are standardized math assessments?

Before we list the assessments, let us shed some light on what these assessments really are. These assessments evaluate the math skills of students who wish to enter college. The college admission officers consider the result of standardized math assessments a student acquires and decide whether they are eligible for their chosen college course. Remember, it does not matter what grades you got in high school or course contents you completed earlier. The marks you get in these particular math assessments are all that matter.

So, which are the standardized math assessments you should consider? In the following sections, let’s explore that.

Standardized math assessments to evaluate crucial math skills

Among many assessments functional within the US, we have ten of them listed here.

1. Common Core State Testing

This assessment is one of those meant for students in K-12 classes. In this standardized math assessment, students have to learn lesser numbers of math concepts but learn whatever there is in the syllabus thoroughly in-depth. One unique and important feature of this assessment is that it includes what the student learned in the previous class. For example, if you appear in the assessment for 12th grade, there will be math questions covering the syllabus of 11th grade also.

This math assessment is important for students because it emphasizes understanding the concepts. Suppose you solve a problem correctly, covering every step as given to you in the math assessment paper. But, in this standardized test, that will not be enough. You have to show your understanding of the concept and indicate why your answer is the correct one and how you arrived at the answer.

Official link

2. TerraNova

McGraw-Hill has designed this standardized math assessment for K-12 students. This particular assessment subjects the students to the reliability of resources, extensive research, and technical quality. The questions cover the areas of number relations, number estimation, mathematical computation, data analysis, geometry, statistics, operation concepts, etc. Those wishing to appear in this standardized math assessment must practice probability, patterns, algebra, and functions well. Problem Solving and Reasoning are also covered in this assessment.

The importance of this assessment is it does not measure the basic or applied skills only. Instead, the focus is on higher-order thinking skills also. The scores the students achieve are norm-referenced.

Official link

3. Stanford Achievement Test

Popularly known as SAT 10, this math assessment is used extensively across the globe to assess the mathematical and problem-solving skills of K-12 students. Pearsons produce this assessment. The assessment design includes a wide range of topics in mathematics. Students subjected to this assessment will face questions on number patterns, number sense, geometric measurements, algebraic problems, etc. There are questions to check the student’s basic measurement skills and statistical knowledge. There can be questions from probability also. However, that will depend on the student’s current grade or the class in which a student seeks admission.

Students assessed through the Stanford Achievement Test attend questions covering the first half of the coming academic year and the last half of the previous academic year. Thus, this assessment provides scope for better growth monitoring by not binding the syllabus within one academic year.

Official link

4. New York Performance Standards Consortium Test

In the list of standardized math assessments, this assessment calls for extra attention, for it is different from others. There are no regular multiple-choice questions in this assessment. Instead, the assessment is all about applied math problems. To be eligible to take the assessment, the students must complete problem-solving at higher levels. They are often given real-life situations where they have to implement quick decisions and decide which mathematical approach will help them solve the problem at hand. The mathematical skills, numerical knowledge, and materials the students already know from their courses are put to practical assessment in this test.

However, this assessment is available to students of 38 public schools only. The main objective of Ann Cook, the brain behind the assessment, is to assess the performance of students instead of evaluating them only as ‘test-takers.’ Thus, the students easily transform into active learners.

Official link

5. STAR Tests

Yet another standardized math assessment for K-12 students, the STAR assessment, helps educators evaluate the numerical skills students have acquired over the years, whether they are prepared for high-stake tests, etc. Renaissance Learning has designed this assessment.

The STAR math assessment includes questions to check students’ numerical operations (like addition, multiplication, etc.), numerical expressions, percents, square roots, prime numbers, algebraic thinking, geometry, etc., in K-8 grades. For grades 9-12, the syllabus includes data representation, Relations, and Functions, Polygons and Circles, data analysis, data representation, probability, combinatorics, higher geometry, etc.

Official link

6. WorkKeys

After finishing school, many students decide not to opt for higher education and start looking for jobs. American College Testing, or ACT, has designed standardized math assessments for them. With the focus fixed on work skill improvement, the assessment includes math skill assessment also. In this assessment, the students have to attend questions that measure their critical thinking and mathematical reasoning in addition to problem-solving techniques.

All these assessment questions give real-life situations that the students are likely to experience at their workplace. The problems include solving them using mathematical operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, etc., converting fractions to decimals and vice versa, converting units (for example, money), etc.

Official link

7. International Baccalaureate Exam

The International Baccalaureate, or IB, offers to assess students based on their performance concerning the objectives of the diploma programs they choose to carry on with. The four mathematics courses available with IB include Mathematics: analysis and approaches SL, Mathematics: analysis and approaches HL, Mathematics: applications and interpretation SL, and Mathematics: applications and interpretation HL.

The assessment tests the mathematical knowledge, principles, and concepts of students. It also checks their creative thinking process, critical and logical analysis capability, etc. Overall, the students who take this assessment are checked for their skills in abstraction and generalization.

Official link

8. NAEP Assessment

The National Center for Education Statistics has come up with this assessment process named the National Assessment of Educational Progress. The assessment is given to those in grades four and eight every two years. Those in grade 12 get the assessment every four years. The students’ problem-solving knowledge is assessed together with mathematical skills in this assessment.

There are three levels, NAEP Basic, NAEP Proficient, and NAEP Advanced achievement. The main content areas for the mathematics assessment are geometry, measurements, data analysis, probability, statistics, number operations, algebra, and number properties. The students of grade four can have a four-function calculator for solving problems. Students in 8-12th grade can bring any calculator with them. If they fail to do so, NAEP provides a scientific calculator.

Official link

9. HiSET

The High School Equivalency (HSE) test is based on the OCTAE College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education. The main target of this assessment are adults and out-of-school youths. Through this assessment, they can acquire an HSE credential issued by the State. The assessment includes mathematics of various levels so that those wishing to join the med school or engineering (necessarily math-heavy) can successfully do so.

Mostly, the questions are related to logical mathematics, data evaluation, numerical estimation, and arithmetic. There are questions from algebra and probability too. Geometry, including circular and polygonal shapes, congruence, Pythagorean theorem, transformations, etc., are also part of the syllabus. Those appearing in this math assessment can use calculators. They will receive a formula sheet from the assessment administrators containing some relevant formulas.

Official link

10. Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC)

Arranged by CTB/McGraw-Hill, the TASC assessment is for evaluating the students’ readiness for advanced mathematical learning. This assessment covers five fundamental areas of mathematics. These are quantitative reasoning, graphical interpretation, algebra, probability, and geometry.

This standardized math assessment allows students to use scientific calculators to solve the questions. There are 43 questions in the math assessment divided into two halves. Students must finish the first half of the assessment in fifty minutes and the second half in an hour. However, they cannot use a calculator for the second half of the assessment.

Official link

That’s it

Standardized math assessments are helpful for anyone wishing to take their career to the next level or achieve higher degrees. From the options we gave above, you can choose any for which you are eligible. If you are a parent looking for assessments to evaluate your child’s progress and skill, the above list can be a great source to start with.

The technique of learning has changed over the years. Children within the age group of 3-8 years have the best ability to grasp things easily. Kids need to be appropriately guided from the days of kindergarten. Therefore, their learning techniques need to be attractive so that they can learn while they play.

Mathematics is an important subject that is required in all walks of life. Simple Math like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division can be taught to kids at a very young age through multiple activities. This makes the kid eager to learn, and the basic of mathematics also gets imbibed in them from their early childhood.

Multiplication magic

Generally, kids learn basic numbers first, and later, addition, subtraction, etc. The jump from addition and subtraction to multiplication and division can be daunting for kids. It is better for them that we lay the foundation pillar for multiplication at this age so that they get to understand the basics of the subject. While teaching multiplication, the teachers have to ensure that the kids understand multiplication is nothing but repeated addition.

Some of the simple steps that Kindergarten teachers can follow to teach multiplications are as follows:

You can teach the children that multiplication is actually repeated addition, that is, 2×6 means two groups of six, which is equivalent to 6+6.

If there is any chance to teach the children through hands-on activities, grab the opportunity immediately.

It would be best if you taught the student that one time of any number actually means the same number, like 1×2=2, 1×3=3, 1×10=10, etc. This also means the number is singular here.

It would help if you made the students understand that any number multiplied by zero becomes zero. For instance, 0x1=0, 0x8=0, etc.

You can use a 100 grid to show that skip counting ensures the same result as that of repeated addition.

You can help the children to identify the multiples of the number. The great way to start with multiples is with 10.

It is also essential to make the children understand that the order in which the numbers are placed does not change the result. Therefore, multiplication is commutative. For example, 1×2=2 is the same as 2×1=2.

Fun multiplication activities

Activities of multiplication are an ideal way to indulge your child in game-based studies. This will make the subject more interesting, and whatever the child will learn stays forever. Many pieces of research have shown that when different techniques of teaching are combined, it helps to heighten proficiency in the subject, in this case, multiplication.

There are various activities that you can choose to use in your classroom for effective teaching of multiplication. Given below are some examples of multiplication activities.

1. Pass the ball

This lesson is fun, interactive, and easy to play inside the classrooms. All you need is a beach ball and some enthusiastic learners.

Materials required

Permanent marker/ stickers to write on

An inflatable beach ball

Music tape

Steps to play the activity:

When the ball is inflated, write simple multiplication questions on each color segment.

Now, take the students to the playground and make them stand in a big circle. You can do it within your class also with small groups of them

Next, the teacher will play the music, and the children pass the ball to the one on their right till the music stops.

When the music stops, the child with the inflated ball may choose any color on the ball and read the question on it.

The entire class has to then tell the answer in unison.

After this, the ball will be passed on with music being played and will carry on like this.

Three or four groups like this can make the circle, and at a particular time, the group telling the highest number of answers wins.

The technique here is to relate the numbers with the color on the ball. And, as the rest of the children in class tell the result loudly, the child finds it easier to remember also. For example, color-coded grids can also be used. An example with the pie chart above. You can think of the pie as the ball.

2. Multiply with the eggs

Using egg cartons and toy eggs can be a fun way to learn multiplication. The teacher needs to bring the egg cartons/ egg boxes from the house and toy eggs can be used in order to avoid the game becoming messy.

Materials required:

Egg box/cartons

Permanent marker/stickers

Toy eggs

Scissors

Steps to play the activities:

First, you need to cut the lid from the egg carton/box

Write some simple numbers to be multiplied like 3×2, 1×4, etc. in the depression of the egg box/carton

On the toy eggs, write the answers like 6, 4, etc.

The children need to place the toy egg with the correct answer on the depression of the egg box.

3. Multiply with building blocks

Colorful building blocks can be used in multiplication activities in the classroom. The activity will be engaging and simple.

Materials required:

Building blocks of different colors

Steps to play the activities:

First of all, you need to separate blocks with 2, 3, 4, or more heads. Group these blocks separately.

Now, give a multiplication problem to the child. For example, 2X4

Instruct the child to pick 2 blocks having 4 heads each. Then ask them to count the total heads on both the blocks.

Thus they will relate their answer “8” with the eight heads of the blocks.

This activity will give them a practical approach to solving multiplication problems. First, start by giving simple problems and once they get a strong hang of it, then try it with little bigger numbers.

4. Multiply with audio-visual effects

Researchers have seen that we tend to remember the lyrics of songs easily as it is strung by music. Therefore combining studies with music helps the children remember more effectively. Through this activity, the children can be taught tables easily.

Materials required:

Big LED screen

Rhymes’ music only

Steps to play the activities:

Then, music on any popular rhymes that the children can relate to should be started in the background.

The child has to say the tables in the rhyme tune, like 1×1=1, and the display on the screen will also have one frog. Similarly, for 1×2=2, the children can sing the tune of rhyme in unison, and there will be two frogs on the screen.

This audio and visual way of learning will be very effective, and the student can remember the tables very well in this way.

5. Partners of Cards

This will be quite similar to using memory cards. To the concept of memory cards, you can add a bit more fun activity and make it more interesting.

Materials required:

Small blank cards

Colored Sketch pens

Steps for the activities:

Prepare two stacks of an equal number of cards. One stack will have problems like 3×2, and 2×4 written on them (question cards), and another stack will have answers to those problems like 6, 8, etc (answer cards).

In the class, divide the children into two groups of equal numbers. One group will be “Q”, and the other, “A”.

Distribute the question cards among the Q group and the answers cards among the A group.

Now ask each child to come out front and read out the question on their card. As they do so, ask what the answer to that will be.

When you get the right answer, ask which child from the A group has that number on their card.

So, these two children from Q and A will be partners.

How will these activities help the kindergarteners?

Learning something only from the book and practicing it on paper may not always impact the little minds in the same way as it would if they are actively involved in the process. When the kids participate in the games, it will make them remember the math problems in a more interesting way. The audio-visual activities will help them relate to the multiplication process easily. So, when they participate in the activities, and the teachers encourage them positively, they are sure to find it fun and exciting.

Wrapping up

Children love nothing more than playing. So, taking the opportunity of making them learn through play activities can yield positive results, no doubt. Teachers need to plan a learning session in a way that would help the child not only memorize but understand the concepts by heart also. This is where activities come in handy.

Children should not be bounded only to books to acquire knowledge. There are many things out there that can be used to gain simple knowledge. This will make studies interesting. The common games played by the children can also be used to learn multiplication. These interactive ways enlighten the kids from a young age and tinkle their nerve cells which help them in the future.

We all know what elapsed time is, but have you ever thought about how it’s represented on a number line? Before we dive deeper, let us define the concepts of time and elapsed independently.

Time is a quantifiable period or length of time in which an event occurs, and elapse is a verb of time that signifies ‘pass or go by.’ This elapsed time is a time term that refers to the period that has passed between the beginning and end of an event. This time can be calculated by subtracting the end and start times. To measure, simply subtract the minutes and hours separately. It specifies the length of an event.

Helping learners put this into practice can put the best of the educators in a dilemma; while the traditional teaching methods work wonderfully, taking additional help of worksheets and printables can often be an essential enhancement. Hence, in this post, we provide you with a printable worksheet and template that can help students practice and understand the concept of elapsed time on a number line.

What’s included in the worksheet?

The worksheet PDF has 3 worksheets, all focusing on teaching students about Elapsed Time.

The first worksheet in the PDF comes with a set of word problems, each of which needs to be solved on a number line. The student needs to read and calculate the time elapsed between the two given time frames using the number line given. This worksheet has 4 such word problems for the practice of students. The word problems include events with time frames that lets students think, add and find the total time taken for all tasks to complete.

The next worksheet also comes with some word problems that the student needs to solve on the given word problem. The problems included in this worksheet are a little more complex than that of the first worksheet that can be used as a level upgradation when the child gets a hang of the simple word problems.

The third worksheet comes with a set of problems that the student needs to solve with the help of the “KEY” that is given with the questions. The students solving the worksheet need to fill and find the correct starting and ending time. The purpose of this worksheet is that the students get to know how different time frames can be represented on the number line without getting confused between hours and minutes.

How can these worksheets make the learning process easier?

For children, elapsed-time problems seem to be notoriously tricky. Existing mathematics[1] education literature does not emphasize instruction on techniques for learning and teaching elapsed time. This lack of instruction irritates parents, children, and even teachers. Most children experience frustration when attempting to determine elapsed time during mathematics instruction. This is particularly true when the beginning or end time is between the hour and the half hour. In addition, children have difficulty keeping a record of unit changes between minutes and hours.

One way to help this confusion, frustration, and lack of learning is through student-friendly, well-drafted worksheets. Then, with proper guidance and handholding from teachers, students can quickly get on track and begin to get comfortable with this concept.

Students have a different and varied understanding of time-related problems and elapsed time concepts. These worksheets allow them to look at real-life situations and even make mistakes if necessary. During corrections, teachers can spend a good chunk of time on each student, show them the mistakes, and help them correct them.

What makes these worksheets unique?

Students can grasp concepts during their formative years, and time is an important topic in mathematics and real-life scenarios. Elapsed time exercises encourage students to practice reading and writing using various instruments.

Elapsed time teaching materials and worksheets will assist students in solving various types of word problems using digital and analog-style clocks. They require knowledge of minutes, hours, and seconds, which anyway gets a tad bit difficult for children to keep track of and then go on to solve word problems keeping in mind the same.

Teachers can print these well-formed worksheets over and over till the time students reach a decent stage where they can fairly solve a word problem.

These free worksheets can easily be incorporated into a student’s learning plan and geared to their specific requirements. Depending on your child’s cognitive level, parents and teachers can allocate these hard copies all at once or each one at a time.

Conclusion

Any learning style can benefit from a worksheet exercise. These free printable worksheets assist students in better understanding time. In addition, these are easy to use. All you need to do is download, print, and begin practicing.

Please know that elapsed time is a tricky concept in itself, and patience is an absolute key here. Make sure you give your students or child enough time to adapt and warm up; results will definitely follow!

Our children’s growth is constantly monitored at school through the constant stream of homework assignments, quizzes, tests, projects, and standardized exams. Our initial thought may be “they’re doing this already!” or “more tests?” when we first hear the term “student progress monitoring.”

Do you understand how much your child is learning or developing, though? During standardized testing, your child’s performance is compared to that of other students or state standards. Unfortunately, the tutor who has been working with your child throughout the year will be unable to utilize the test results to determine how to assist your child in learning better because these tests are administered at the end of the school year.

Progress monitoring can provide you and your child’s teacher with knowledge to help your child learn more and faster. Not just that, it will teach more skillfully and assist teachers in deciding what kind of education will be most beneficial for your child. In other words, student progress monitoring is not another method of giving your child a number; instead, it is a method of assisting both the student’s learning and the teacher’s instruction.

Progress monitoring tools for math: Crucial for providing progress information?

Monitoring student progress enables teachers to assess the success of their instruction, whether it be for a single student or the entire class. For instance, the kid might have a reading objective that specifies how many words per minute they should be able to read by the end of the year. Alternatively, the child’s math objective can be the number of questions successfully answered on exams covering the year’s worth of math material.

Following goal-setting and instruction, the teacher evaluates the student’s progress toward the goals each week. Since each exam is equally challenging, the weekly assessments can correctly reflect the child’s pace of progress.

The teacher can evaluate each test by comparing the material the student should have learned to the actual learning rate. If the student meets or exceeds the expectation, the teacher keeps teaching him or her in the same manner. However, if the kid falls short of the standard set, the teacher can modify the lesson plan and introduce newer ways to help the students.

The changes can vary anywhere from the method being utilized, the duration of instruction, the grouping configuration (for instance, individual instruction versus small-group instruction), or any such essential feature of teaching. In this procedure, the teacher seeks out the kind and volume of education that will allow the student to advance far enough in the direction of the objective.

The measurements last between one and five minutes, so the kids won’t feel like they are being evaluated all the time. Additionally, because the teacher monitors the student’s development regularly (typically once per week), the instructional plan can be changed as soon as the student needs it rather than waiting until a test or state evaluation reveals that the student’s requirements are not being fulfilled.

Free tools to measure your kid’s math performance

Math is an important subject, and waiting to measure for the annual tests to measure kids’ performance can carry a negative impact. Therefore, we have compiled a list of the best progress monitoring tools and assessment systems for math.

Progress Monitoring Tools

Intervention And Assessments Programs

3. Middle School Skill Assessments

The middle school skill assessment tool checks the kid’s ability to solve the problems in the standard syllabus. This progress monitoring tool has classifications of assessments based on the grade the kid is in. At this moment, if you believe that your kid is lacking in class or you wish to test their knowledge, you can use these pre-assessments and click off the checklists. The best part about these pre-assessments is it includes a test guide wherein the kid themselves can test the answers and know where they fall back.

How to access the tool?

Click the link above to access the tool.

Start by selecting the checklists and check which concepts you know and which you don’t.

Then move to the next assessment step and start answering the questions.

Once done, you can cross-check your answers from the answer guide.

The kids here learn to monitor their own progress rather than someone else doing it for them. As a result, they will understand where they lack and which concepts are strong.

Official Site

5. Multiplicative Thinking Intervention Program (3-5).

Another free math intervention program we provide is the Multiplicative Thinking Intervention Program (3-5). This program focuses on the developmental stages children go through when learning multiplication and division. A solid basis for multiplicative thinking is required because when rational numbers (fractions and decimals) are introduced, students must have a solid framework to draw connections and enhance their knowledge.

Benefits Of Multiplicative Thinking Intervention Program

The progress monitoring/data tracking component provides a simple tool for tracking student progress.

The data collected after the initial universal screening evaluation is recorded on the progress monitoring sheet.

These scores serve as a baseline data point and provide important information about the learner, allowing data-driven decisions about which skills to focus on first.

The program also includes daily formative assessments that can regularly make instructional decisions. The results of these daily assessments will determine which classes will be prepared and implemented.

The benefit of the program is that the teachers will be able to learn how to administer the Multiplicative Thinking Assessment and how to utilize the results and refine their instruction.

Official Site

You can get ready-to-use teacher lesson plans, worksheets, and visual organizers for each intervention lesson from this Michigan-based website. There’s a lot to unpack here, so take your time reviewing all the resources to ensure you’ve tapped into all you might need.

How Does It Work?

Tier 2 and Tier 3 screeners will identify student strengths and unfinished learning of high-priority standards from the previous grade level and two or more previous grade levels.

Standards-based reports will show student performance data so that tier 2 intervention can begin with all kids, or small, flexible groups of students can be scheduled for each tier 2 or tier 3 standard.

Tiered Instruction and Practice-The Institute for Education Sciences’ evidence-based suggestions for each readiness and tier 3 standard will be incorporated into intervention lessons. (Levels 2 and 3) After each intervention session, progress tracking will quantify and graph student progress toward each learning goal. Targeted practice, as well as distributed practice, will assist in intervention with large groups of students.

This progress monitoring has four screening recommendations, with one in each season. The tool works for both math and reading, and it can be your one-stop solution for checking on the kid’s performance.

Official Site

Conclusion

Monitoring a kid’s performance, especially in math, helps both the teachers in getting an insight into the kid’s performance. It is intended for both the use of kids or teachers working directly to monitor the kids. Now, as you must have seen, all these tools ensure that you have a platform to rely on even if you wish to know how the child performed even after one day.

You can monitor the progress rate and the graphics trajectory and then make a constructive lesson plan. The prime goal for coaching/facilitation is to ensure that we keep a charge on what the kids are learning and then, based on the reports, must provide feedback to improve instruction. Thus, stop waiting for annual test reports; instead, monitor your child’s progress after every passing day and help your kid exceed.
