They just used comparing and contrasting in real life! The kids who don’t even know terms like compare and contrast engage in these activities without any prior knowledge. It is that basic to humans.
The compare and contrast skills help children view things from different perspectives and gain a unique understanding. Although these skills have been there in us since toddlerhood or even before that, formal education plays a crucial role in refining and giving direction to these skills.
Comparing and contrasting activities are crucial for promoting critical thinking, brainstorming, logical thinking, metacognition, etc. Therefore, it is highly important to introduce these concepts effectively and skillfully to the children.
In this post, we have shared and discussed a compare-and-contrast lesson plan that is carefully designed, highly organized, and systematic for young kids. Educators can use the plan as it is or modify it as needed. It will help the educators present the concept in a highly intriguing and engaging manner.
A detailed lesson plan for comparing and contrasting
Compare and contrast skills are a strong means to identify what’s not visible to us and question what is obvious to us. It helps assess two or more things and evaluate them beyond what is obvious and visible. The compare and contrast lesson is a carefully drafted plan that will introduce the young minds to the concept and strengthen their knowledge regarding identifying similarities and differences.
The lesson plan focuses on certain key objectives that lay a strong foundation for understanding, comparing, and contrasting.
The objectives are-
- To understand the terms compare and contrast
- To enhance the children’s skills of comparing and contrasting
- To learn the vocabulary related to compare and contrast
It will take approximately 60 minutes to cover the complete lesson plan, and the plan is suitable for children at the primary level.
The lesson plan begins with an interesting brainstorming activity. Brainstorming activities are a great way to enhance children’s engagement in classroom activities and encourage them to engage in critical thought processes. The activity involves two images, one of a tree and the other one is a plant. Educators have to ask students to identify the images and, once identified, ask students to find similarities and differences between the images.
When identifying the similarities, emphasize words representing commonality, such as ‘both’. And while identifying differences, again emphasize words that differentiate between the two images, such as ‘but’. It will help children learn the concept of compare and contrast and its vocabulary.
The lesson plan further focuses on another activity that compares and contrasts two things. It will be a level-up activity to strengthen the concept more firmly in children’s minds.
Additionally, the lesson plan deals with the representation of compare and contrast using a Venn diagram. Venn diagrams are super useful for simplifying information and representing it in an organized manner. The overlapping side will represent the similarities, whereas the areas that don’t overlap represent differences.
Educators can modify the topics at their convenience and children’s interest. Lastly, the lesson plan deals with two images with many elements that are highly similar yet different. Ask students to find 5 similarities and differences and record them in the template provided.

Educators can make different groups with 10-12 children in each group and initiate different activities, games, or discussions regarding the identified differences and similarities in the represented images. Discussions will provide an opportunity to brainstorm and expand the level of understanding.
3. Smartly use other graphic organizers to promote comparing and contrasting skills.
Educators can add more fun to the compare and contrast activities using different and appealing graphic organizers for writing like T charts. Pre-designed compare and contrast templates can also be used, which are attractive, effective, and super easy to use.
